Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel and Bill Nighy are just some of the stars that have signed up for the remake of the 90s hit “Total Recall”.

The trio join Irish actor Colin Farrell, who was earlier cast in the main role of Douglas Quaid, originally played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1990 blockbuster.

Bill Nighy will play the role of Quatto, the resistant leader, who was originally played by Marshall.

Beckinsale will play opposite Farrell as Quaid’s wife Lori, a part once portrayed by Sharon Stone.

Biel was cast as the second female lead, Melina.

The remake is set to be directed by Beckinsale’s filmmaker husband Len Wiseman. The original screen-play was based on the short story We Can Remember It For You Wholesale by cult writer Philip K Dick. Set in futuristic 2084, it follows a construction worker who goes on vacation to Mars.

Speaking about the remake, Dublin born Farrell said it would be much darker than the original.

“The film, tonally, is really different,' he said. 'I loved the original and I've seen it recently and it's still great.'”

“But it's really camp,” Farrell added. “Ours is quite a bit darker. I say this not in a disparaging way, but there's not as many kind of winks to the audience, it's played a lot more straight.”

Filming is scheduled to begin in Toronto next week and the blockbuster will be released in cinemas in August 2012.
