Irish theater reborn in the Bronx this weekend
There's only on place to be in New York City this weekend. On Saturday, a new theater company is starting up in the Bronx featuring the latest work of a variety of well-known writers and directors including the three Irish founding members Colin Broderick, Don Creedon and Stephen Smallhorne.
The newly minted Poor Mouth Theater Company will debut their first night of theater entitled "Get Your Shorts On" at An Beal Bocht Cafe on West 238 Street in the Bronx and it's a guaranteed sell-out, so be sure to get your tickets as early as you can.
Both Creedon and Smallhorne are celebrated as both writers and directors and Broderick's debut memoir "Orangutan" has created a sensation in the Irish Community here in New York. Fans of his work may like to know that in addition to the new theater pieces, Broderick will read a seven-minute excerpt from his new book titled "That's That."
To kick off events this weekend Poor Mouth will unveil a plaque dedicating the space to the late great actor Chris O'Neill. Chris, who was known to many in Ireland (and to the expat community here in New York) as Michael in the long running TV show The Riordan's, was also one of the co-founders of the original Bronx Irish Theater Company seventeen years ago, giving many in the Irish community their first shot at working with a serious theater company.
In that same spirit the new group are hoping to create a home for lost creative souls in the Chris O'Neill Room at An Beal Bocht Cafe (voted best bar in New York by Time Out magazine).
Although all three of the founding members are Irish they want to make it clear that this is not an Irish theater company. All are welcome to attend and participate; their goal is to provide a space for the expression of the creative spirit.
So what's stopping you? Get on the No. 1 train and come down and join them this Saturday. For further information about the group look them up on Facebook at Poor Mouth Theater Company.
