Will Ferrell's latest box office hit “Megamind” lead the way this weekend over “Due Date” with almost $50 million in ticket sales according to studio estimates.

The animated movie tells the story of a crafty villain called Megamind, played by Ferrell who hatches a scheme to fill the void in his life after finally defeating his nemesis. The film also showcases big Hollywood names such as Brad Pitt, Tina Fey and Ben Stiller.

The highly anticipated road trip saga “Due Date”, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis'  trailed behind with $33.5 million.

“Megamind” drew big family crowds on Saturday and Sunday, but it also brought in large numbers on adults without children on Friday according to Anne Globe, head of marketing for Dreamworks Animation.

"For us to be No. 1 on Friday, it showed we did have a lot of appeal to teens, 'tweens and the date crowd," Globe said.
