Shane MacGowan is doing his bit to help Haiti

Legendary Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan enlisted the help of some famous friends to record a version of Screaming Jay Hawkins’ “I Put a Spell on You” to help raise money for Haiti relief.

The idea was the brainchild of MacGowan and his longtime girlfriend Victoria Clarke, who decided to round up some friends to record the tune in London.

“It just popped into my head as a great alternative to what Simon Cowell is doing," Clarke told Channel 4 News in England, referring to Cowell's collaboration to record a version of R.E.M.'s  " Everybody Hurts."

“And I thought he  (Shane MacGowan) would be brilliant doing it and I thought Nick (Cave) would be brilliant doing it.”

As well as Nick Cave, Chrissy Hynde of The Pretenders and Mick Jones of the Clash lent their considerable talents to the effort.

Johnny Depp, a close friend who has played with MacGowan and The Pogues before, came on board and played guitar on the single.

All concerned looked like they had a good ol hooley giving up their time to make a single for those affected by the tragedy in Haiti.

MacGowan explained he felt the song was such a good choice.

“Casting a spell on you doesn’t mean a bad spell, it means casting a spell on you because I love you,” he said.

The single is set to be released on March 8 and all monies raised will go to Irish charity Concern.
