One of Hollywood’s most promising Irish stars has missed out on a lead role in the hotly anticipated Star Wars reboot.

Saoirse Ronan’s chance of starring in ‘Star Wars’ has been dashed.

The Irish star auditioned for a part in JJ Abrams' hotly anticipated 'Star Wars' film earlier this year, but she revealed she didn’t make the cut.

"I don't have 'Star Wars', I don't have the role," she told Indie Wire's The Playlist. "I just shouldn't have said anything. I just auditioned for it, like everyone else did."

She may not have been cast in the remake, but she says she still enjoyed the audition process.

"To pretend that you have a lightsaber in a scene is always very exciting," she said.

The reboot is expected to feature a mixed cast of big names and upcoming stars.

"It wouldn't be 'Star Wars' if there wasn't some fantastic actors who happen to be British," the film’s director J.J Abrams told 'Newsnight.'

"But I think we're doing our job and looking everywhere for the best possible actors for the roles."

Disney have set an expected release date of December 18, 2015.
