'Iron Man 3' has been crowned the highest-grossing film of 2013.

The superhero adventure starring Robert Downey Jr. took in a massive $1,215,439,994 at the box office, overtaking the runner up 'Despicable Me 2,' which had total takings of $918,573,535.

The blockbuster topped the charts as the biggest film opening with $174.1 million domestically – the fourth-biggest domestic film opening in history.

Robert Downey Jr. has found a winning formula with Marvel’s 'Iron Man.' Playing  playboy billionaire Tony Stark has made him the best paid actor in Hollywood with estimated earnings of $75 million.

Thanks to 2012 superhero team-up movie, 'The Avengers,' 'Iron Man' also became the highest-earning superhero on the big screen of all time, raking in a combined total of $3.8 billion.

The huge success of high-grossing winners such as 'Iron Man 3' offset the year’s high-profile flops including 'The Lone Ranger,' 'After Earth,' and 'Turbo.'
