It's fashion week in NYC, and front rows don’t get more chic than the A-listers who populated the Edun show on Sunday.
Bono’s wife Ali Hewson is Edun’s heart and soul, and the big guns came out to support her latest efforts at producing a fashion line that’s wearable, profitable and, most importantly, sustainable for the African people it promotes and employs.
Sting, his wife Trudie Styler, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Courtney Love, The Edge and, of course, Bono himself were on hand to cheer on the models strutting their stuff. Ali later told Women’s Wear Daily that “we don't let (Bono) near the clothes. That's the only stipulation," she laughed. "But he's an amazing sounding board. It's always great to get his opinion."
And Bono seems to be fine with that. “I’m not an expert on these things, and so I’m looking at it like a child. I’ve been to half-a-dozen fashion shows in my life. It’s a wonderful parade apart from everything else,” he told the magazine.
“But Edun cannot be famous for its do-gooder sensibility. The vision has to be an aesthetic one. I thought the floral patterns with the African prints on top of them were incredible. But if I start talking about fashion, just thump me.”
Bono did confide that his trademark sunglasses are always Armani – “We have a very deep relationship with Mr. Armani. He’s been very good to me. – and that he’s going to take a little down time now that U2’s world tour is over.
“I don’t do free time very well. But Johnny Cash was once asked when he was happiest and he replied, ‘Walking barefoot in my backyard.’ And I’m going to do that, a little bit of that.”
