The late, great Elizabeth Taylor had many friends in the movie industry, but the honor of hosting a memorial service for her went to Colin Farrell, who only knew Miz Liz for a short while but obviously made a huge impression on the legend.

Farrell was the host of a private Taylor tribute held on Sunday at the Warner Bros. studio in Burbank.

Among those celebrating her life, which ended in March, were her old friend Elton John, Sir Michael Caine and all of her children.

Farrell and Taylor’s friendship went under the radar practically until her death.  At her private funeral he was selected by the family to read a poem.

A couple of months ago Farrell shed some light on how he got to know the Hollywood legend.
“That was a most unusual friendship,” he told The Irish Times. “Which is quite fitting for such an extraordinary individual. I met her around the time (Farrell’s son Henry) was born (in 2009). I met her via a mutual friend and bulldozed my way into her life.

“I phoned her up and she was kind enough to allow me to come round to her house. We’d watch a bit of TV or read a poem.  We’d just hang out. We wouldn’t talk about the old days.”

Last weekend was a busy one for Farrell.  On Saturday night he attended the Spike TV’s Scream Awards to present to his friend Robert Downey Junior.

“When I think of a hero I think of one man. He’s brave, he’s strong . . . and I’m slightly attracted to him. He’s a hero with swagger,” Farrell said.

We’ve gotta assume that the “slightly attracted to him” part of the intro was a joke on the part of the Irishman also known as the Lusty Leprechaun for his love of the fairer sex!
