There’s nothing quite like an Irish cottage – iconic, quaint, and full of history.

Property prices may be skyrocketing once again in Dublin, but in the rest of Ireland, and especially in the countryside, there are still phenomenal deals to be had. Especially if you’re willing and able to roll up your sleeves for some DIY renovation. (Or hire people who know what they’re doing.)

We took a look through the property listings on daft.ie to find the cheapest and most interesting cottages on the market in Ireland right now. None of them are exactly in turn-key condition, but with prices starting at $17,000 (€13,000), we’re not about to complain.

Is any of these your Irish dream cottage? Which one would you buy? Let us know in the comments section.

Srah Lower, Carracastle, Co. Mayo – $17,000 (€13,000)

This single-story cottage in Co. Mayo is the least expensive of the listings on the market right now. It’s in need of “major repairs” and sits on 0.3 acres of land.

Magheralosk, Bunbeg, Co. Donegal - $19,800 (€15,000)

A traditional house in Co. Donegal, this dwelling is also in need of some updating but has the great bonus of being only steps away from the Gweedore Estuary. Listed by McBride Auctioneers.

Kilnock, Claremorris, Co. Mayo - $25,000 (€19,000)

An auction listing that appears to have been someone’s work in progress. Originally a stone cottage, the walls were stripped back for wiring, and the previous owner added a new roof and septic tank. The property comes with 0.15 acres and “a large lawn.”

Carkfree, Ballinameen, Co. Roscommon – $26,300 (€20,000)

Just listed as of yesterday, this long cottage sits on a little over one acre of land a mile outside the village of Ballinameen. It needs a full renovation.

Woodlands Cottage, Moygara, Co. Sligo - $30,000 (€23,000)

Also new to the market, this cottage currently has two bedrooms but would make a great expansion project for the right buyer. The 1 acre of land overlooks Moygara Castle and is close to scenic Lough Gara Lake. Listed for auction by Vincent Egan Auctioneers.

Fairy Street, Athea, Co. Limerick – $33,000 (€25,000)

Well how’s that for an enchanting name! The cottage, which is in need of renovation, sits on 1.25 acres outside Athea, Co. Limerick. The current layout includes two bedrooms, a loft, and a kitchen with an open fireplace.

Cloonaghboy, Swinford, Co. Mayo – $33,000 (€25,000)

This .25 acre site includes the three-room turn of the century cottage (pictured), as well as a small mobile home. There is electric, but no septic system set up.

Corsallagh, Cloonaool, Co. Sligo - – $33,000 (€25,000)

This traditional gem will require “extensive refurbishment,” but its rural location near the River Moy will make it a great holiday retreat for the right buyer. The listing has been on the market since 2010, which always makes one wonder, but this is the lowest price it has been offered for.

Dromadajoyce Killasser, Swinford, Co. Mayo – $33,000 (€25,000)

This cottage dates back to the turn of the 19th century and is in original, restorable condition. It sits on .5 acres near the River Moy and includes outbuildings.

Duneill Mountain, Dromore West, Co. Sligo – $33,000 (€25,000)

This listing description for this two bedroom cottage doesn’t say much about the property aside from it being “derelict” and coming with one acre of land. However, the photos show an outbuilding, some lovely original stonework, a tiled fireplace and a nice gravely country road leading up to the gate.

The Demense, Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon – $33,000 (€25,000)

This 3-bedroom cottage (also described as “derelict”) comes with outbuildings and close to one acre of property. The stonework, chimneys and creeping ivy are all fairly enchanting, however.

Which cottage would you go for?
