ORRECO was born from a passion for sport and a fascination with performance at the highest levels. This company has built a world class reputation for performance analytics among high performance athletes. It was founded by Dr Brian Moore and Dr Andrew Hodgson in Sligo, on the west coast of Ireland in 2009.

Founder and CEO Dr. Brian Moore has established a world class team, a scalable global resource for sports haematology and biochemistry analysis, and clients who are striving to break personal, national, and world records.

Orreco is based in Sligo in Ireland and is backed by Enterprise Ireland and has received support from the Innovation Center at Sligo Institute of Technology.

Where did the idea for Orreco come from?

My parents, Joe and Anne, were biomedical scientists and they supported me in going to St Mary's College Strawberry Hill in London, where world class athletes train every day. This led me down the path of combining the worlds of medical laboratory science and sports science.

I was also inspired by Professor Craig Sharp in Brunel – a modern father of sports science in the UK – and Robin Parisotto, who was the director of the laboratory at the world famous Australian Institute of Sport.

What is your greatest achievement to date?

Our greatest success are when an athlete or team improves their performance, hits a personal best or performs to their full potential on the world’s greatest sporting stages. That's now happening on a weekly basis across F1, the premier league, Olympic Sport, PGA tour golf, America’s cup sailing, Olympic level track and field, swimming and Triathlon. It's really exciting.

Advice for other starters?

Love what you do, think big and work very, very hard!

What are your plans for the rest of the year?

We plan to continue building our presence in professional sport. We are finalizing a round of investment to further develop our global network and support our rapidly expanding client roster.

Right now our focus is on the top end of elite sport but our ultimate aim is to make these tools available to the mass market athletes. We're discussing exciting strategic partnerships to scale our solutions and help them get the best return on all their hard work for their next marathon, triathlon. 10k or sports event.

What are the key challenges facing Orreco?

I think the challenges for any start up are the same with regard to assembling a team, building a scalable solution that people need and want, securing investment and going global - wherever you are.

Who is on your team?

Our team is made up of experts in the fields of sports medicine, science, nutrition and coaching from around the world. Dr. Charlie Pedlar (Physiology) worked at British Olympic Medical Centre and English Institute of Sport. Nathan Lewis worked with the British Olympic team on nutrition. Grainne Conefrey handles all our logistics and worked on the Major League Baseball account for Hill Holiday in Boston.

On our advisory team we have Dr. Christian Cook, a former speed and power coach to the New Zealand All Blacks rugby team and Prof Carlo Brugnara of Harvard Medical School. All are part of our team because they love the idea the technology and its application for the best athletes on the planet. We are also all excited about the day when this is available to us all!
