The Beatles will always remain Liverpool’s greatest treasure, but the Irish have every right to take a bit of the credit as three of the Beatles claim Irish roots.

Paul McCartney claims Irish heritage on both sides of his family. His great-grandfather James McCartney was born in Ireland (some sources suggest his grandfather James McCartney II was as well).

His maternal grandfather, Owen Mohin, was born in 1880 in Tullynamalrow, Co. Monaghan, and his grandmother Mary Theresa Danher was a Glaswegian of Irish descent.

Paul grew up in an Irish Catholic family in Liverpool where he went to school with George Harrison and met John Lennon.

After the summer of love was over and the Beatles parted ways, McCartney continued his songwriter efforts. His solo career has continued to bring McCartney success over the past three decades.

This February, he was nominated for two Grammy Awards. At the ceremonies, he performed the Beatles classic “I Saw Her Standing There.” 

Though he did not leave with an award, he did leave the Jonas Brothers a lesson on how the original pop idols did it.
