The Aran sweater is more than just a sweater. It’s a winter garment that represents a part of the rich history and culture of Ireland. Also known as the Fisherman’s Sweater, the Aran-style sweater was first made by women on the Aran Islands off the western coast of Ireland in the 1890s. As fishing was the main livelihood of Aran Island men, wives and mothers knitted these sweaters using unscoured wool to keep the fishermen warm during the brutally cold winters.
