Naming trends come and go as the years pass, and some may actually recognize this adorable moniker as a nickname that might have belonged to their grandmother.

While some names result in a plethora of cute and snappy nicknames, they often stay as just that – nicknames. But for others, these nicknames become so popular that they become standalone names themselves, think Lisa (Elizabeth), Bill (William) and Ellie (Eleanor).

One name that has produced lots of nicknames is Catherine, with babies given this name growing up to go by Kate, Katie, Cathy or Kat.

Another that we love and that has clearly struck a chord with parents in recent years is Kitty.

We’re not the only ones who find it oh so adorable; the name has been climbing the charts in recent years.

First appearing in the rankings as a standalone name in 1996, Kitty was given to three baby girls in that year, ranking in at 534th place.

By 2010, its ranking had increased to the 395th spot, with twelve baby Kittys born that year.

A few years later the name peaked in 2020 with 19 babies born, ranking in at 229th.

In 2025, the most recent records show that 14 babies were given the name, which secured it in 294th place on the charts.
