I know that the O'Donoghues originally came from the ring of Kerry, according to books; however records show my ancestors Owen and Patrick O'Donoghue came from Co. Cavan to Canada to build the Irie Canal in the early 1800's.
My great-grandmother, Kate McHugh, came from County Cavan but we never knew from where. All we know is her father's name which was Thomas, mother's name unknown. She immigrated in the 1850's to Baltimore to be with her sister Mary Louise and following the American Civil War went to Texas where she met George Oswalt and married him at the Catholic Cathedral of St. Mary's in Austin, Texas in 1869. She died in 1919 in San Antonio, Texas. Some of her surviving children, now deceased, were Mary, Nora, Sally, Theresa, Bessie, and my grandmother, Eva. Anyone with any information on this family email jlizm@aol.com.
I lived the first thirteen years of my life just outside cavan town. Istill miss it.
I AND MY DAUGHTER ARE GOING TO IRELAND APRIL 12. MAINLY TO VISIT MY AUNT IN BAILIEBOROUGH BUT ALSO TO DO SOME SIGHTSEEING. MY GRANDMOTHER WAS A MAXWELL SO THIS CAUGHT MY INTEREST. THEY LIVED IN BAILIEBROUGH AND HAD A PUB AND I WONDER IF THEY DESCENDED FROM THE MAXWELLS IN THIS ARTICLE. WOULDN'T THAT BE SOMETHING?
Hooray !! It time for my ancestral town to be recognized for something other than fishing--although--that is important. I hope a rail connection is brought back, but, if not I will continue to take the bus from Dublin. For those who have not visited Cavan Town, it is a quiet place with a beauty all its own, and history readily available at the library for all to view. It truly is a fishermans paradise.
