Just back from there....so unspoiled and beautiful. All those peninsulas on the south west coast of Cork and Kerry are magnificent. There is nowhere in the world like them. The plus is that Beara is not as well known or commercial as the Ring of Kerry so it feels like a well kept secret. And it feels a little more mysterious and romantic.
Agree with you somewhat, Seanskelligs. The best thing about the Beara peninsula is that it gives you the backdrop to the best view in Ireland - Derrynane Harbour and Kenmare Bay from Coomaciste Pass on the Ring of Kerry
Not even in the same league as the Iveragh peninsula and Skellig Ring next door. Who decides these things to even compare them!!!
This is a place I visit every year and I always recommend it to people for their first trip to Ireland. The first time I drove the Healy Pass back in the 90's my wife had to get in the back seat. She was scared to look out the window. The Mizen and Sheepshead are also wonderful, unspoiled and off the usual tourist route.
