Queen Elizabeth has declined Tourism Ireland’s request to light Buckingham Palace green for St Patrick’s Day, as part of an international celebrations of Ireland’s patron saint.
In a letter to the marketing body the Queen said that her decision to not take part did not take away from the special affection she has for the country and the people of Ireland, especially since her historic State Visit, in 2011.
The Tourism Ireland initiative will see iconic landmarks around the world including the Empire State Building, Christ the Redeemer in Rio and even the Pyramids in Egypt turning green for St Patrick’s Day, March 17th.
Niall Gibbons, chief executive of Tourism Ireland, said tweeted saying they had received a "lovely letter" from Buckingham Palace.
He tweeted "Her Majesty has sent 'good wishes to all those in Tourism Ireland working hard to promote the many attractions of Ireland north and south'”
"While not lighting green on 17 March, the Queen's 'special affection for Ireland' (was) noted."

Very little point in greening any civic building anywhere in Ireland when her soul is in Irish-America. A metaphysical point borne out every year by a stampede of Irish government ministers jockeying for a junket to the good ol' USof A. Nationalist Ireland isn't dead and gone. Or with O'Leary in the grave. It's with Irish-America in The States. So tune-in. Turn-on. And drop-out. And pass the shamrock spiff, Maan!

I'm reminded of the St. Patrick's Day in the late 1950s when President Eisenhower, sporting a GREEN tie, warmly greeted Seán T. O'Kelly, who was wearing a 'regular' tie A rather surprised Ike asked his guest why his tie wasn't green. This was his answer: "I wear green in my heart". It is unreasonable of anyone to expect England's queen to make her palace more Irish that any government building in the Free State.

Anglo-Norman, if you are serious, read "The Case for Christ" by Lee Strobel. Strobel is a former atheist and Yale Law School graduate who performed a thorough investigation and analysis. Of course, you will never find mechanical scientific proof of a metaphysical concept if that is what you're looking for.

Buckingham Palace isn't where the action is. Ulster Television (UTV) 6 pm news this evening report Belfast City Council having voted to floodlight City Hall in green for Saint Patrick's Day - from next year! Also, in purple and orange (Buddhist colours?) for the Glorious 12th. Red and white for - Poland Day! And red and yellow for Chinese New Year. Problem solved by all the honourable councillors in situ. I knew they'd come to their senses.

1. Irish-American-ness IS a culture of its own, derived from the immigrant/exile experience, and needs no permission from the 'mother country' to justify its existence. As former president of the Celtic Arts Center in Los Angeles, I met many bands from Ireland who expressed amazement at the music and atmosphere and general craic we built, both recent Irish, Scottish and Welsh immigrants and those whose families have been in the US for generations. There are Celtic descendants in clusters all over the world - still cherishing traditional music and dance, theater and literature. In spite of a few peculiar snobs, I should think that Irish citizens appreciate them, if for nothing else, their tourist dollars and export market. 2. Does Ireland need the validation of a foreign monarch, whose titles and inheritance are entirely unwarranted by any virtue of her own, for some reason? Be proud my blood brothers and sisters of Ireland, that you need not cater to royalty now.

STEVENSTAR, I agree with you that the Queen should not have to paint Buckingham Palace Green, she is after all English. However, I take issue with you saying that people of Irish descent living abroad are not Irish. Yes they may not be culturally Irish, but still Irish by blood. The country one resides in just determines citizenship. Black Americans may be culturally different from Black Africans, but are still Black. Same with French Canadians, Cajuns and European French.

stukafaust – “What if we asked Dublin Castle to have the cross of St. George emblazoned across it on April 23rd?” I’m going to surprise everyone here and say this would not be a bad thing. The captive nations of the british terror state, its first victim England included, should be encouraged to re-assert their national identity (in this case it would be the english people not the whitehall vipers).

allan07 - another spastic brit troll. I love how the english/british always profess that they care little about Ireland when in reality most of them have a sick obsession rooted in some need for supremacism from their perpetually degraded position to their governing oligarchy. “The Irish are just so double standards [you need an adjective here] it is beyond belief. They accuse the British for everything that has gone wrong in Irish society. Just stop the lies” British abominations are clearly documented in their own records. Penal laws, land theft, Caribbean slavery, forced tithes to your anglo “Church,” cap and pitch, half hangings, random violence for frivolous offenses, outlawing education as a felony offense, etc. Is it your position that these plagues were self imposed by the Irish? Incidentally, the Catholic Church has been opposed to Irish nationalism for centuries.

A British union flag is flown outside Dublin City Council offices on Essex/Wood Quays for Ireland's 6 mth presidency of the European Union (EU). In contrast to no Irish Tricolours outside Belfast City Hall. So much for reciprocity! Áras an Úachtarán could very well be floodlit with the red Saint Patrick's saltire most appropiately for the day in question. Why not?

Allan07: "The spanish inquistion (1481-1834)was a roman catholic plot to murder anyone whom was opposed to their church.353 years of brutality that makes the British look like angels." Tnis is stupid nonsense. The Spanish Inquisition didn't have the power to execute anyone, they could only turn people over to the Spanish state. This they did in ever decreasing numbers from about 1520 onwards. William Reville, an Iriah authority on the topic, says that the Inquisition was responsible for some 4000 deaths in its three and a half centuries of existence. As to them making the British (sic) look like angels, try telling that to the countless Irish murdered by the English in the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Start maybe with the ethnic cleansing and massacres of the Munster Wars in the 1580s and work your way up to 1798. Come back when you know something about Irish history.

@happyhippo well the roman catholic church didnt spread from Rome by love or kindest. It spread by having a massive army and murdering everyone whom opposed their views.Anyone who opened their mouths in challenging the roman catholic religion ended up as the next meal for a pride of hungry lions. Hardly freedom of speech. So take of those green tinted glasses. make up and smell the coffee time. The spanish inquistion (1481-1834)was a roman catholic plot to murder anyone whom was opposed to their church.353 years of brutality that makes the British look like angels. Do you ever read history? If so dont be acting so stupid. The Irish nationalist are always crying wolf. Always playing the victim. I supppose you will claim the only people who suffered the Potato Famine were all Catholics. (The protestants people dont eat or needed any food!). Get real. End your propaganda.

If i was English or Unionist i would not be proud at all of their record in Ireland, but then just like Scotland and countless countries all over the world the aim was always total domination and elimination of their culture by any means including wholesale slaughter,so as to grab the resorces of the country for the benifit of Queen and country,Emerald green is one of the most beautifull colors, buck house and the Union Jack is a symbol of ugly British imperialism, lets make sure we dont confuse beautifull with ugly.

I, at 60 yrs of age am an Irish woman thru' & thru, my Dad, born 1902 deceased, Rip, was in the 'Old I.R.A. Love my country (sumtimes with this recession, i wonder why !) but, as they say, it's 'ground' into me. I love history & know our history with the English. But, like all the Irish years ago times were hard & took the 'boat' to English shores. Lived & worked there & had no problems with the ordinary working people like ourselves, except the drunken English, like the drunken Irish on nights out always brought up the conflict between the two countries. And yes, i've sang the songs (yep, on a night out)while we all love our history, IT IS HISTORY... me i like peace. Love my heritage, and i celebrate St. Patrick's day because it's an Irish thing & Irish the whole world over celebrate it. I don't shove my heritage down everyone's throat,& wouldn't want anyone to shove theirs down mine. But, i respect other peoples views & while we Irish will probably always have this wee conflict with the English I for one think history is in the past & while we all love our heritage why can't we move on & be happy with our lives & make peace our way forward. And yes, the Queen is English why should she paint her palace Green no more than i would paint my house Orange.... Peace evryone, have lived thru' it getting sense in my latter years... :) Th stuff they write here, talk about having a chip on your shoulder... From a not very well off Happy Irish woman with 10 children... & NO not on social welfare.... My husband worked all his life.... ( i never worked...so my kids always thought... :)

Cillowen, makes a very good point about Queen Victoria by saying "Was she so Beloved'. When Victoria took over the throne she was broke, when she was told how much she would be paid by the State she sat down and worked out how much she could save from it each week just like a cotton weaver in Lancashire or Belfast would. The biggest disgace of her reign is: 'she was not allowed to speak to a commoner or to know one socially'. The courts and prison systems were brutal. Her subjects wore rags, children had no shoes, religious authority ran riot and deportation to the colonies was common. If her reign was a success it was solely due to the PM Disraeli, to Robert Stephenson the railway king, and Thomas Alva Edison, Ohio, the American inventor whose Electricty Generating System allowed 'cheap electric motors' in every workplace and factory which give birth to the industrial age. I think we can consign the next four monarchs to the dustbin of history> (US translation 'trash can') and it's fair to say HM Queen Elizabeth as been an inspiration to all in her role as Head of State, with quiet leadership and example. I do not think her son Charles will ever be King, so the Monarchy will pass to Prince William and Kate probably within the next 10 years.

The person in charge of Bord Failte should be fired and replaced for this terrible act of ignorance. What possessed the individual to approach the German Monarchy and suggest their bastion of frightfulness should be illuminated in green? Herr Majesty, like the people of Ireland, must have been surprised at the suggestion. Lads, we must not draw attention to ourselves during these changing times. I give the German Monarchy in the UK 25 years before it collapses and is replaced by a Muslim council and Sharia law. How can an anglophile Germanic family rule over and represent a people who are no longer English? Whole cities and towns in the UK are now Muslim and the Bord Failte eejit wants to paint Buckingham Palace green? Was he drunk? Its Londistan now. We can't help the English anymore. They must accept their fate.
kinvara7 | Mar 02, 2013, 04:56 PM EST
This refusal is predictable and silly. Images have been projected onto the palace before, therefore the request to light it green in recognition of St Patrick is hardly breaking protocol. How often do we hear that the Union Jack includes the Flag of St Patrick? She is still the Head of State of part of Ireland, and as St Patrick is the patron saint of the entire island what on earth could warrant a refusal to light a building green instead of yellow for a little while? Tourism Ireland is responsible for promoting Northern Ireland and one would have thought that the palace would understand the economic benefits of tourism more than most.

I suppose the Irish Begrudgery Brigade will be out there snarling because the White House, St. Peter's in the Vatican, the statue of Christ Rio, etc. are not turned green in deference to a drunken ethnic festival. The London wheel would make more sense to turn Green and that would be up o the vote hungry Mayor. Buckingham Palace will only turned green when Britain becomes a Muslim country, green being the color of Islam. ... It was tacky of the overconfident and entitled Kardashians to expect Kate Middleton to wear their sleazy clothes. It is just as tacky for overweening and grandiose Irish "leaders" to expect Buckingham Palace to be turned green. ... By the way, when national groups from the Irish Diaspora march in Dublin's St. Patrick's Day Parade I would presume they will carry their national flag as well as the flag of Ireland. So presumably the UK contingent will carry a Union Jack or the Crosses of St. George, St. Andrew and St. David as well as the cross of St. Patrick, thus deconstructing the Union Jack. That should be interesting.

KidShelleen | Mar 02, 2013, 02:10 PM EST
There can be reason not to comply. Something applied for is not an automatic reason for fulfilment. There can be genuine or false clever reasons the request fails. For example I have being trying for years requesting the Irish establishment, ie government, president, courts, fraud office, solicitors’ and “family” in Dublin to have criminal activities including alleged attempted murder investigated, all are concerning my inheritance “lost” records. Over a period of seven years I have had in writing proof of lies told in the cover-up and from archives the returns are negative responses, turned down because they have no relevant trace of my records? The British queen has reasons to refuse and this is her private opinion and not up for questioning by another national independent peoples. Acknowledging other positive comments, I second “STEVENSTAR” statement “WHY SHOULD SHE TURN HER HOME GREEN? SHE IS BRITISH NOT IRISH” I would suggest though STEVENSTAR use lower case text instead of being a bawling out Irishman…

Green Beer, Green Pyramids, Green Empire State Building. Irish Tourism is a sales/marketing organisation - the British Monarchy have a long-standing policy of detachment from commercialism, wisely in my opinion. They regularly get 'gifts' from e.g. hat/shoes/clothing companies hoping for a bit of publicity - all of these are returned with a polite letter. Buckingham Palace is an icon and I think it would be rather seedy/tacky to floodlight it in green. To do such a thing could open a global can of worms - "They did it for Ireland - why not for us?". And BTW, I'm Irish and live in the 26 counties.

But ahh well, we still have our friends in America, Australia, Africa, South America, etc that will be turning their famous landmarks Green. Theres even a St Patricks day parade in Beijing China for the second year running and as someone whos learning the Chinese Language, i would love to see it. But everyone knows the best St Patricks day parades are held in America by our Irish American/Canadian brothers and sisters, alot of people from ireland go every year to see them :) To Dickmac: Yes dick, the st patricks cross is in the Union flag but was it placed there with the permission of the Irish people? I think not, since we wanted independence for centuries. @STEVENSTAR: stevenstar, i live in belfast and i cant help but sense your a hardcore british loyalist from the north of ireland. Many Irish have immigrated here and , of course, passed their culture down generations. Stevens: You say that the English have their own culture and you are correct - and their language is widely spoken all over the globe. But in recent years that great culture is gradually being diluted by foreigners from the Third World. I admire English culture for reasons other than London being the place of my birth. Having lived in the U.S for half a century, I don't see who this country stole the culture of Irelnd or any other nation. Yes, Irish culture is very much in evidence in the States, specially his time every year. But it was immigrants like me who helped to promote Gaeldom in this country, tír ina mbíonn teanga na Gael á húsáid again ó ham go chéile. I even gave Gaeilge classes to my fellow marines in Camp Lejune, N.C. when Jack Kennedy was our Commander-in-Chief. I'm sure you know that most of the people living in Ireland greatly admired that President, including those who delight in hating the U.S.A.

It's simply that she saw what happened, without cross-community consultation to the Union Flag on Belfast City Hall and recognised this suggestion as the initial step to banning the flag on the Palace.

Ireland should stop commemorating the foreign pervert who lied to the Irish and established a foothold for Vatican operations in Ireland. It's a shame nobody give him a belt of an axe as soon as he set foot on shore.

What a ridiculous waste of money that would have been.
WoundedKnee | Mar 02, 2013, 09:31 AM EST
Good decision. And shame on whatever Irish idiot started the campaign that has now crashed.

And most of all I miss her lips etc etc ending in " and the frothy shades of green ". Incidentally, Seanmor, St Patrick was born in Boulogne Sur Mer Nord Pas de Callais en France. His father was Culfernus the lighthouse keeper in Caligula's tower. Besides, Patrick gave us a Shamrock to represent the 3 provinces and the date 432 was also a metaphor for Ireland as was The Field of John B. Keane's play. The size of Keane's field was " 3 acres 1 rood and 32 perches. So, all of this St Patrick stuff is just a load of shite and isn't well the queen knows it. So grow up over there in Tir na Nog, people are getting fed up of you and your Leprechauns.

Maybe we could turn the queen green and put a leprechaun costume on her.

One strong connection this queen has with St. Patrick is that they are both natives of England. In addition, the queen is the titular head of the Church of England, and the Church of Ireland is in communion with that denomination. In other words, Queen Eliz. is the head of the only church that takes it name from Ireland, the whole Irish nation that is.

I second the eMotion of antoman. I, too, "don't see why Buckingham Place should turn green for" St. Patrick's Day, to paraphrase antoman slightly. Consider, if you will, some public structure in Dublin, or wherever in Ireland, being painted red for St. George's Day, or some British holiday.

Automan u are right! Is she irish , why ask her anyway? Shameful!

I don't see why Buckingham Palace should turn green for Paddy's Day. So few Irish go to the UK now to work. The Irish that are there have been there for a long time. The population of the UK is very diverse ethnically. People from countries that were brutally occupied and exploited by the English Monarchy and whose descendents went to the UK to return the favour. Resulting in the UK's population being now predominately Muslim. Whole cities and towns in the UK are now populated by Muslim people from countries that had been conquered by the English. To reflect this Buckingham Palace should be decked out in Muslim colours with Minarets along the ramparts calling the faithful to prayer. By right the Queen should not be seen in public and if she is she should wear a veil. Only her husband should be permitted to address the nation. He is the man of the house.
