Almost 100 percent of tourists rated local friendliness in Killarney as “extremely high” and 95 percent of participants rated the quality of service as “exceptionally high”, a new study has revealed
The pilot study was undertaken by the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) in co-operation with Fáilte Ireland and organizations in Killarney and surveyed 659 tourists.
A total of 97 percent of those surveyed were very impressed with the Killarney charm.
Favorite attractions included Muckross House, 36 percent; Killarney National Park, 34 percent; Ross Castle, 16 percent; Killarney Lakes 12 percent, and the Ring of Kerry, 12percent.
Almost 40 percent of participants decided to visit the popular Kerry town as a result of recommendations from friends and relatives.
Traffic flow problems, lack of pedestrianised areas and bad weather all accounted for areas of dissatisfaction.
More than seven-in-ten people came from abroad from regions such a North America, Britian and Europe. Nearly a fifth of Irish tourists were from Cork.
The main draw backs for tourists included late-night noise, litter, lack of signage, commercialization, lack of public transport and the availability and cost of parking.
The Killarney Chamber of Commerce and Tourism was among the organizations supporting the survey.

My wife and I, Bostonians, loved Killarney. Spent only 2 days there doing the Ring of Kerry etc over Thanksgiving Holiday. My dad was from Sneem, Kerry and mom from Cork. Our first visit, 5 days, to Ireland. Must get back again..soon. Ducked into Laurels Pub from the rain one eve and spent 4 hours. We felt like we were locals , met the owner and a few who knew Boston area as well. A good time.
