The Boyne Valley



Trim Castle in Co. Meath is the largest castle in Ireland, and one of the largest Norman castles in all of Europe. - Andy Spearman The Drogheda Railway Viaduct, built in the 1850s, is an impressive feat of engineering located in the Boyne Valley. - Andy Spearman Loughcrew, also called “The Storied Hills” or “Mountain of the Witch,” is one of Ireland’s major passage tomb sites, and dates back to around 3200 B.C.  - Andy Spearman The Horse Bridge, on the disused Boyne Navigation series of canals, gets its name from the fact that it was built to allow the horses towing the barges to change to the other bank. Church ruins lie atop the hill. - Andy Spearman The megalithic passage tomb at the Hill of Tara, the Mound of the Hostages, is the oldest monument of the site. Evidence of at least 200 individual cremations have been uncovered at the mound. - Andy Spearman The third passage tomb site in the Boyne Valley is Dowth, or the “Fairy Mound of Darkness."
