With Gallery: Dan "The Da Vinci Code" Brown has just written a book about them, and now a court case in Belfast could unearth some of the most closely-guarded secrets about the one of the most-secret organizations in the world: the Freemasons. The ultimate fraternity, the Freemasons have been around since the end of the 16th century, and rumors abound that some of the most-famous men in the world, from presidents to politicians, count themselves as members.
Right on the tail of Justin Timberlake’s take on the Irish emigrating to America on the big steamers, Will Ferrell brought his own bit of Celtic schtik to his monologue on the season finale of "Saturday Night Live."
“Angels & Demons”, Dan Brown’s flashy sequel to “The Da Vinci Code,” is directed at a breakneck speed by director Ron Howard for good reason – if you actually stopped to think about what you’re were looking at you’d probably leave the cinema long before the closing credits.
The new Tom Hanks movie, 'Angels & Demons' is the subject of a ferocious assault by Catholic League president, Bill Donohue
CALL Belfast the new Irish Hollywood. A galaxy of stars will soon take over the city as they begin filming City of Ember, a Tom Hanks-produced film that stars Bill Murray, Tim Robbins and Martin Landau. Production has already commenced, so celebrity sightings shouldn't be far behind.
SHE said a few weeks ago that she'd make a trip to Belfast to support the arts in the newly regenerated city, and double Oscar winning actress Meryl Streep stayed true to her word.
Meryl made journey to the North last Saturday to help raise funds for the city's Old Museum Arts Center (Omac), which is looking to construct a new building at a cost of more than $30 million.
"I'm proud to come to Belfast to celebrate this city's commitment to Omac and its great good work,'' she said.
IRELAND is certainly the place to come from these days if you're a female teen with an eye towards a Hollywood career. First up this summer was Co. Louth native Evanna Lynch, all of 15, who had a highly acclaimed co-starring role in the film Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
IN her own very understated way Ireland's Saoirse Ronan's has just become one of the most important young actresses in Hollywood. After her Oscar nominated turn alongside Keira Knightley in Atonement earlier this year, Ronan quickly took off for Belfast where she filmed the forthcoming Tom Hanks produced blockbuster City of Ember in a purpose built indoor film studio that was once part of Harland and Wolff's massive shipyard.
No sooner had she wrapped up in Belfast but she was off again to Wellington, New Zealand to star as the heroine of The Lovely Bones, the film adaptation of the bestselling book directed by Lord of The Rings auteur Peter Jackson that's due for release next year.
IRISH actress Saoirse Ronan, an Oscar nominee this year for her work in Atonement, can add a stinker to her career resume, unfortunately.
City of Ember, in which she stars with Bill Murray and Tim Robbins, opened on Friday, and the public didn't give a hoot. The film, which was shot in Belfast and produced by Tom Hanks' production company, opened in 10th place on the box office chart with an anemic $3.
From memorable performances in films like Rushmore, Groundhog Day and Lost in Translation, Bill Murray has been a Hollywood A-Lister for decades. He talks to CAHIR O'DOHERTY about his new Belfast-made film, City of Ember, produced by Tom Hanks and also starring rising young Irish star Saoirse Ronan and Tim Robbins.
BRIMMING with adventure and driven by the timely message that a little hope and courage can change your life, City of Ember is the first Belfast-made big budget blockbuster to ever hit the screens (it opens nationwide this Friday).
Irish Eye on Hollywood
By Tom Deignan
Amidst the popcorn blockbusters of the summer, keep an eye out for veterans as well as up-and-coming Irish talent in Hollywood.
First up, Pierce Brosnan stars alongside Meryl Streep in Mamma Mia!, based on the musical, which itself was based on the songs of Swedish supergroup Abba. Mamma Mia!, scheduled for a July 18 release, is about a bride-to-be who is searching for her father.
