In the wake of the recent horse meat scandal in Ireland and other parts of Europe, archaeologists have pointed out that horse meat was actually served at important events in ancient times, namely the inauguration of the High King of Tara.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI)  has advised the public not to consume Findus Frozen beef lasagne found to contain up to 100 percent horse meat.
 
Professor Alan Reilly, Chief Executive of the FSAI said it is unknown whether the product could pose a food safety risk. Tests are being carried out in the UK to established the presence of veterinary medicine phenylbutazone is present in the frozen lasagnes. Animals who have been treated with this drug are forbidden to enter the food chain.
 
Reilly said “Our advice to consumers at this point, is not to consume this product, but to dispose of it or return it to their retailer.”
 
The Findus product was removed from stores in the UK following the discovery that is was made from predominantly horse meat. The discovery came from the French-based company, Comigel, who were concern about the type of meat being used in the product.

Fast food chain Burger King has ended their deal with Silvercrest since the company is being investigated by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland as horse DNA was found in some of its beef burgers.

Opposition TDs (members of Parliament) are trying to establish why the Irish government only revealed the presence of horse meat in beef burgers last week although officials had known about it for at least four weeks.

As the saying goes, “I could eat a horse,” and that’s likely what many Irish did over the past several months. The Irish Food watchdog, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, said it discovered horse DNA in burger products sold by Tesco, LIDL, ALDI, SPAR, and the country’s largest domestic supermarket chain, Dunnes Stores, causing the authority to demand the removal of ten million burgers from supermarket shelves.
