A German airport has filed a bid for the contract to host U.S. troops as they stop over for refueling to and from various worldwide destinations- a contract that is worth millions of dollars.

Passenger numbers at Shannon airport have declined from 3.1 million to 2.72 million in 2009, representing a 12 per cent drop from last last year. Passenger numbers fell from 3.6million to 3.1million in 2008.

Threats by Ryanair bosses have sparked fears that Shannon Airport in Ireland’s west will become deserted.
