President Obama landed in Belfast this morning and delivered a strong speech urging Northern Ireland leaders to stay on course on the peace process.

Former US President Bill Clinton’s role in the Irish peace process is being highlighted this week at a major exhibition at the Clinton Centre in Enniskillen coinciding with the centre’s summer school.

While the PSNI has begun making plans to subpoena the Boston College ‘Belfast Project’ interview tapes, some are fearful that the exposure of the tapes could bring down Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams and, in turn, the peace process in Northern Ireland.

As a major supporter of the Irish peace process, Bill Clinton moved mountains.  The 42nd President of the United States took the strongest position on Irish issues ever taken by an American president. In 1994, he granted a visa to Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams, fulfilling a campaign promise and stating “the U.S.  cannot miss this rare opportunity for our country to participate in the peace process.”

A major battle is underway by the Irish government and others to secure the $15 million funding by Congress for the International Fund for Ireland (IFI) which funds peace and reconciliation efforts in Northern Ireland.
