Irish president Michael D Higgins has led tributes to Team Ireland’s Paralympic team and their outstanding performance at the London Games.

An official homecoming, at Dublin Airport, for Ireland’s Paralympics team is set to take place on Monday. To date the Irish teams have bagged 15 medals at the London Games, seven gold, three silver and five bronze.

Minister of State for Sport Michael Ring will officially welcome the team back on behalf of the Government at the reception.

Day 7

The medal haul currently stands at 13, as our superb team Ireland continue to outcompete some of the biggest nations in the world on the way to Paralympic glory. Furthermore, six of the 13 medals won so far have been gold, with team Ireland being one of London’s most successful competing nations.

Ireland’s Darragh McDonald earned himself a top place on the Paralympic podium, alongside Bethany Firth, as he became the second Irish competitor to nab himself a gold medal.

Members of the Jordanian Paralympics team, training in Northern Ireland, have appeared in court on charges of sexual assault and voyeurism. The King of Jordan has promised to bring the men back before the court after they were bailed for $7,900 (£5,500) each.

With Katie Taylor heroically capturing gold at London just a few weeks ago, women’s sport has been given a tremendous lift by Ireland’s heroine. Let’s have a look at some of Ireland’s paralympic female athletes, who might well do the same thing in just a few days time.

A 16-year-old Northern Irish scout, whose left leg was amputated below the knee, is set to climb one of the highest peaks in the UK to light the Paralmypic games torch.

The Irish Paralympic team left Dublin for Portugal this morning where they will have a week long training camp before heading to London for the Paralympic games that begin on August 29th. The team is 49 members strong and in addition has the support of 47 coaches and volunteers who also made the journey.
