In an unprecedented statement, New York University Hospital has announced that it will dramatically change its emergency room procedures after admitting that 12-year-old Rory Staunton, son of Irish immigrants Ciaran and Orlaith Staunton, who died in their care, was a victim of poor treatment.

Irish film has undergone a renaissance over the last decade, with new directors and world-class production facilities popping up north and south. Add to that mix wider government funding, new scripts that are more representative of life in modern Ireland and a stable of new and emerging talent achieving major star wattage globally, and you can say that Ireland’s moment in the sun has arrived.

Edna O’Brien threw down the gauntlet straight away. In discussing her latest collection, Saints and Sinners, at Glucksman Ireland House on May 31, she explained that Miss Gilhooley, the romantic librarian in the story “Send My Roots Rain,” had tried to organize literary evenings but found that “people only came because of the wine and the canapés after.”

Glucksman Ireland House, the home of Center for Irish Studies at New York University, hosted its inaugural university day “Who Do You Think You Are,” on Saturday, April 17. The event, attended by some 125 people, was remarkable in content and variety of presenters.

Alec Baldwin is making a $1 million donation to his old school. The '30 Rock' star is creating the Alec Baldwin Scholarship fund to benefit low income students who want to attend the prestigious New York University's Tisch School of the Arts.
