Reports are making the rounds that Notre Dame and the University of Connecticut will not participate in a previously arranged six game football series.

If these reports are true, I like it.

The Fighting Irish stood to gain very little by tussling with a Husky football program still in its infancy stage. It's sort of similar to playing Boston College: lose to BC and you're ridiculed. Defeat Boston College, as should be expected, and it's no big deal.

You're Notre Dame. They're Boston College. You strive to win National Titles. They strive to....well, they strive to beat Notre Dame — the rest of their season's outcome be damned!

Notre Dame ought not feel obligated to assist UConn in its vision to build a football program worthy of national respect. They've already done so with a small Jesuit school in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.

And, seeing that many Boston College players and fans have behaved boorishly toward Notre Dame players and fans, that didn't turn out so well for Notre Dame.

According to rumors, UConn was miffed by Notre Dame's insistence on playing the scheduled UConn home games at Giants Stadium or Gillette Stadium — rather than in East Hartford, home of the Huskies.

Well, that's the way it is when you run up against Notre Dame Football: You're UConn. Know your role.

Sorry.

UConn scribes have been shouting, "UConn doesn't need Notre Dame".

Funny...seems even UConn head coach Randy Edsall believes otherwise: "These games will be a tremendous recruiting tool for our program, enhance our national television exposure and increase visibility in two metropolitan areas in which we have significant alumni."

(This quote was issued several months ago — back when the series was announced.)

Nevertheless, Notre Dame unbinding itself from a greenhorn program in the Big East is certainly good news.
