Despite Tom Brady not playing a single snap at Foxboro last night, the New England Patriots came away with an easy 47-12 victory.
The result of preseason games generally means nothing for either side but there were a few notable individual performances on the Patriots side.
There was a lot of talk about Ryan Mallet making his debut last night as well as Blaine Gabbert for the Jaguars but it was Brian Hoyer who really stepped up. Hoyer went 15/21 for 171 yards and a touchdown. He showed that he is not going to relinquish his backup job to Mallet anytime soon.
Mallet himself performed adequately when he was on the field putting up similar numbers to Hoyer but Hoyer gets the edge for starting the game against better opposition.
Rookie running back Stephen Ridley was on the end of Mallet's only touchdown pass. Ridley really stood out last night scoring three touchdowns on his NFL debut. He carried the ball 16 times for 64 yards and two touchdowns as well as catching the ball 7 times for 47 yards and a touchdown. It is understandable now why Bill Belichick drafted Ridley because he is not simply a thumper that will play between the tackles.
While Chad Ochocinco watched from the sidelines, little known Taylor Price was in outstanding form for the Patriots. Price had five receptions for 105 yards which included a 50 yard long. However it was Price's touchdown catch that really got fans excited. Price contorted his body in the back of the endzone to make an outstanding play on the football while also remembering to toe the line despite the velocity of the ball thrown his way.www.twitter.com/Cianaf
