Every Boston Celtic fan feared the worst when Kevin Garnett went down in Detroit last night.
Garnett came back down the court limping after throwing down an emphatic dunk. He was favoring his right leg, the leg that had previously undergone knee reconstruction, before intentionally fouling to stop the game so he could hobble off the court. Garnett did not return but all X-rays came back negative.
The dominant power forward is to undergo an MRI today however Celtics Coach, Doc Rivers, remains optimistic "I don't think it's bad," said Rivers, "I'm not that concerned. He's going to miss games probably-I don't know how many-but I don't think it'll be that long."
Rivers also reassured Celtic fans that it was a calf injury and not the once fragile right knee, "You've heard me say it before, an injury when no one is around, that's usually a severe one. I was thinking it was a bad one, but let's hope not. I don't think it is, but we'll find out later."
This season had been the first season in years that Garnett had looked like his old athletic self. He came into Wednesday night's game averaging 15.4 points per game and 9.8 rebounds per game.
Rondo to return
Rajon Rondo is expected to return from his ankle injury this friday against the New Orleans Hornets.
Rondo missed the last six games with a sprained left ankle. He injured the ankle in a 118-116 victory against the New York Knicks on the 15th of December. Rondo had 14 assists in that game, a feat that has not been matched during his absence.
The Celtics had 21 turnovers, a season high, in their loss to the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night. The return of Rondo should help curtail what was quickly becoming a major problem for the Celtics. The star point guard has missed ten games this season but averaged 11.2 points per game and 13.8 assists per game when healthy.
The Celtics are 24-6 heading into their friday night showdown with the New Orleans Hornets with both teams coming off tough losses; the Celtics in Detroit and the Hornets at home to the Lakers.
