The New England Patriots have been, for all intense purposes, the leaders in bringing in the new era of hybrid tight ends. The New York Giants will put this new aspect of the NFL under major scrutiny this weekend in Super Bowl XLVI.
While Tony Gonzalez and Antonio Gates have previously altered the position, the Patriots are the first offense to build a passing attack based on the players they had at the position.
Regardless of Rob Gronkowski's health this weekend, the Patriots will be looking to both he and Aaron Hernandez to lead the team's passing attack. While Wes Welker led the team in receptions, and is the best slot corner in the NFL, it is impossible to build a passing attack around Welker as the team's number one receiver.

Tom Brady and the New England Patriots enter this week anticipating their match-up with the New York Giants while feeling motivated by the prospect of lifting the Lombardi trophy on Sunday night in Super Bowl XLVI.
For Brady however, there are more motivators than just another Super Bowl ring, of which he already has three.
Prior to the 2011 NFL regular season, Eli Manning claimed that he was in that elite category with Tom Brady as a professional quarterback. While many snickered and poked fun at Manning, who's Super Bowl victory is often credited more to his defense and David Tyree despite him winning the MVP, I initially felt it was a fair statement.
Since then, Manning has done nothing to change my opinion of him.
The New England Patriots will compete in the Super Bowl after beating the Baltimore Ravens at Foxboro.
In a tightly fought affair, the Patriots edged out the Ravens by a scoreline of 23-20 with Ravens' kicker Billy Cundiff missing a field goal in the dying seconds to tie the game.
Bill Belichick and Tom Brady have led the Patriots to the franchise's seventh Super Bowl appearance. For Brady and Belichick, it will be their fifth appearance as a couple in Patriots' blue.
The New England Patriots and Baltimore Ravens are the last two remaining teams in the AFC as they meet in the Championship game today to decide who will go to the Super Bowl.
While their style of play couldn't be any different to each other, both teams are capable of putting on dominant displays on any given Sunday.
Veteran leaders, Tom Brady and Ray Lewis, will both be looking to outfox each other while also providing the heartbeat of their respective rosters.
Today, the NFL announced that the 2012 regular season game held in London will see the St. Louis Rams hosting the New England Patriots on October 28th.
That is not all however...
The Rams have agreed to give up a home game each season for the next three years in order to play a game in London every year. Each of those games will be played in Wembley Stadium as the NFL stated that each international series game, held in the UK, between now and 2016 will be played in Wembley Stadium.
Saying goodbye is always difficult. It is even more difficult when you have to say goodbye to someone you love. Someone who has brought a huge amount of joy and happiness into your life.
For many Boston Celtics' fans, this is something that is running through their minds.
Initially, there is always a reluctance to even consider saying goodbye. Denial and disbelief are only preludes to declarations of defiance and polar opposites to reality simply because it is so hard to accept.
"Sometimes you just have to take it, shake hands and say well done."
The New England Patriots are the next stop on the Tim Tebow bandwagon, as the Denver Broncos travel to Foxboro to play in the divisional round of the AFC playoff picture.
As the world is enveloped in Tebowmania, after the Broncos eased past the Steelers in the wildcard round, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick are fully focused on reversing their recent playoff fortunes.
Not since the 2008 AFC Championship, have the Patriots beaten a team in the playoffs.
The Denver Broncos shocked many people with their overtime victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the wildcard round of the NFL playoffs.
In all likelihood, the only fans happier than those in Denver, resided in New England. The Patriots had major issues against the Steelers earlier in the season as Dick LeBeau had the perfect gameplan to shut down the Patriots' offense, unlike last night against the Broncos.
Going against Denver, many fans will already have their tickets booked for the championship game.
In roughly six months, Ireland will play their first game of the European Championships against Croatia.
Until that time, Giovanni Trapattoni's eyes, as well as the eyes of most Irish fans, will be watching over the quality of performances that Ireland's key players can produce in the Premier League and Championship.
The New England Patriots have found themselves in the NFL playoffs once again after locking up a number one seed in the AFC. Here is a quick look back at how the pieces that got them there performed during the 2011 NFL regular season.
Quarterbacks:
Essentially just grading Tom Brady here. Brady was the team's MVP once again this year. It may be boring and predictable but there isn't much to say about last year's unanimous MVP of the whole league...

All-Pro Candidate.
The 2011 NFL regular season is in the books after the New England Patriots destroyed the Buffalo Bills in Week 17.
Not too surprisingly, it is another year in which Bill Belichick and Tom Brady have led the Patriots to the top of the AFC.
Brady and Belichick are undoubtedly the kings of winning in the regular season, the duo have won more games than any other player coach combination throughout history, and this year may be their greatest achievement to date.
