Matt Ryan and Tom Brady the nowhere men after defeats to 49ers, Ravens

End of the line for Tom Brady in Super Bowl appearances?
At one point it appeared likely that the two greatest Irish American quarterbacks of their generation, Matt Ryan of the Falcons and Tom Brady of the Patriots, would meet in Super Bowl 47.
That was when the Falcons had jumped out to a 17 point lead against the 49ers and looked to be cruising.
Meanwhile Brady’s Patriots were favored to defeat the Ravens at home, leaving a mouth watering clash of two great quarterbacks as the story of the Super Bowl.
It was not to be. The 49ers, despite being 1-27 in games where they trailed by 17 points, staged a magnificent comeback, helped, it has to be said, by two huge blunders by Ryan, one an interception, the other when he bobbled a snap and San Francisco got the ball.
Still we thought, Tom Brady will surely do the necessary at home against the Ravens who lacked the kind of explosive offense that usually gets teams to Super Bowls.
Not to be however, as Brady fell asleep in the second half and the Ravens had 21 unanswered points.
The demise of the two quarterbacks raises important questions about their future.
Legend though he is, the chances of Tom Brady making it back to the Super Bowl grow dimmer with each passing year.
He has become one of those quarterbacks who looks good in the regular season but fails to shine in the playoffs.
The same could be said of Ryan, who had a spectacular regular season but made critical mistakes in the play off game today.
At least Ryan has youth on his side and Atlanta will have learned a lot this year.
Brady on the other hand is reaching the point where his skills will inevitably decline. We may have seen the last of Tom Brady ever making it to a Super Bowl.
Ryan has a shot but he needs that clutch Brady ability which the New England quarterback had at his height.
Both men will be watching from home this year -- a huge blow for them.
Truth be told the future looks a lot less bright for them both after yesterday’s results.

So proud of our Ravens. Flacco may not have the star power of Tom Brady but he got the job done on Sunday. I think this will be a fun match up--two similar style teams. Even though, once again, the Ravens are underdogs, a win is certainly possible. We hosted a playoff party on Sunday with family and friends. Our respect for Tom Brady and the Patriots is so great that, with two minutes left in the game and a 15 point lead, we still didn't feel comfortable that the win was in the bag. Brady could certainly get a touchdown, have an offside kick then tie the score. Our family tradition of setting off party poppers didn't happen until the clock said zero. Patriots fans--we know how you feel--we felt that way last year. The only thing we can predict is that a Harbaugh coach will win the Superbowl. Let's hope it's John!

The patriots let Randy Moss go, and left themselves without the 6'5" speedster wide receiver That could jump 3' that took two defenders with him all over the field. That is what beat them th past two years. Their tight ends are great, but not deep threats like Moss was. Moss heading downfield cleaned out one side of the secondary. Bellicek Just bites himself in the rear, and does not know it ! As for those hacks on the CBS cast of thousands analyists .Sharpe ,Long ,Johnson. perhaps they can add an Eskimo to fillout the panel. They look ridiculous and make nonsense an accepted thing.

Brady "...has become one of those quarterbacks who looks good in the regular season but fails to shine in the playoffs." What ??? Let's see, including the 2007 season, Brady and he Pariots have been in 2 Super Bowls (lost both in the last minute) and three American Football Conference Championships (winning two of them.) That's over six (6) seasons. No quarterback in the NFL has done as well over this time period. If you're going to pretend to be an expert, capable of making reasonably knowledgeable remarks, then it might be best to maintain at least a minimal contact with reality.

Belichek needs to bring Parcels in as an adviser/offensive coordinator as the two together are dynamite. Bill is older and might accept the reduced role and Belichek is his friend. He has even patched things up with the owner. Bill would love to get one over on the sportswriters by making a comeback after getting into The Hall.....if Belichek doesn't do the Parcels move he and Brady can watch the NFL game further and further away from them......

Tough day for Irish quarterbacks but a good era for Irish head coaches: Coghlan, Ryan, Shanahan, Pete Carroll, McCoy (chargers) Kelly (phillie) Fox (broncos) McCarthy (packers) Sean Payton (Saints) probably a few others.......funny how when you get a black coach or even Eyetalian they love to brag, but the Irish keep on rolling with class....

I am a big Matt Ryan fan with BC supporting. He has a history of having bad second halves. He has a strong arm but suffers "brain lock". It looks like he wears down and needs to drink more gatorade at the half.
