Joe Paterno about to be fired -- right decision made by Penn State

Joe Paterno will be fired from his position as coach of Penn State over the sex abuse scandal that has hit the campus like a whirlwind.

The New York Times has reported the news and it is the right decision by the Penn State board.

Paterno canceled a press conference shortly before it was due to be held.

While Paterno did not break any law, there is no doubt he failed to aggressively follow up a first hand report of a child sexual abuse incident in 2002 involving disgraced coach Jerry Sandusky now facing multiple child rape charges.

Paterno did pass the information on to the Athletic Director but his failure to actively pursue such a horrific report means he will be forced to step down.

It is not the way the 84-year -old legend wanted to end his career but the board was left with no choice.

Unlike the Catholic church in many dioceses who continued attempts to cover up pedophiles, the Penn State board has taken the issue head on and made the only decision that makes sense.

It is tragic end for Paterno but he only has himself to blame.

What I can not figure out is why McQueary still has a job? He is the one most culpable. He saw the crime and should have reported it. Joe Paterno reported the crime to his superiors. He could have done better and told McQueary to report the crime to the police or followed up and reported it himself after he realized nobody else was going to take further action. McQueary and the university administrators actions, or lack thereof, were much worse than those of Paterno.
It is unreal that not more was done. If these allegations are true, I think they should all have a hard time looking in the mirror. If it was their son or family member being raped (let's call it what it was the boys were minors)they would not be as "casual" about it. It all comes down to money. A scandal costs the university their reputation and money/power. So that will always be "more important" than doing the right thing. I think Paterno is an icon. But they ALL should have made sure the allegation back in 2002 were looked into. How they live with themselves now, I have no idea. They are responsible for every other rape/violation because did not stop this monster. These kids will need massive therapy to even be able to cope. And watching these Penn State students screaming and rioting about Joe's firing are missing the big picture. Nobody is saying Paterno did not contribute to making Penn State what it is today. Nobody is doubting his loyalty and commitment. But if Paterno (and the others) were able to walk around knowing that it may be possible Sandusky actually raped kids and not be moved to report it to the police, then they all got what is morally fair. Actually they may have gotten off easy versus what the victims will go through. As for Sandusky, if he did this...let him rot in jail and I am sure he will get what he "deserves".....
C'mon people.. go to it!! Here's a red meat story for you about a pedophile who was protected for 15 years and not delivered to the authorities by his boss, Paterno; and even worse, he was hidden by a venal Univ. administration who could not bring itself to firing the bastard. --- Are the usual pedo-ranters (the ones who can't stop blathering against the CC, like JuneAnnette, eerieMuck, gloryB1929, etc.) going to call for the head of the Univ. President who shielded him? Will they demand reparation$$$? Will they condemn the entire University system as a pedophile incubator? Will they go after the board of directors? What about an investigation of the whole athletic program of every US University?
@agree with you, Sean. Anyone who sees a child being sexually abused, or has knowledge of it, has the legal and moral duty to report it to the police - no excuses. JoPa didn't follow through - morally inexcusable. Sorry, Jopa, you and the AD have to go. Btw: the Big 10 Athletic Board will want you gone, too.
sick man. Lost alot of respect for joepa. way worse than what tressel did. Penn state should be ashamed of these sick basterds.
