French must face defeat against Uruguay at World Cup

When it comes to soccer I usually root strongest for
U.S, then
Ireland then against England.
Not this world cup.
Today I'm rooting for
Uruguay.
Yes I can hardly spell the name and know very little except they won the first
World Cup.
But they are playing the hated French today and anyone who beats the French is alright with me.
Les Cheats are in the World Cup because of the most blatant professional foul in the history of sport.
If
FIFA had any cojones, they would be watching this World Cup from the Folies Bergere after
Thierry Henry deliberately handled the ball in the Irish goalmouth and set up a fraudulent score.
The French barely apologized but if they progress in this World Cup they will give soccer a bad name for ever.
The Beautiful Game, which came alive again today after the first match between
Mexico and
South Africa, deserves better.
So don't Allez
France, say no to frog football-- even if they are playing England.
Go Urugway

Absolutely! These very articles seem to contravene the rules of the site. Having said that, I want France to go out and will be supporting whoever they play. However, my feelings are pretty "tongue in cheek". I would guess that the Irish will generally support the teams that have players from Manchester United or Liverpool in. Otherwise, the team that provides the best entertainment.

why isn't there a dislike button (not only like)thumbs up? Please improve writing and coverage of stories instead of childish grudgery bordering on hate?

get over yourself - move on and get a life!! it's sports and any other team would do the same if they could get away with it? Let the best team win be it France or whomever - Spain looks real good!

"Yes I can hardly spell the name and know very little" I couldn't have expressed it better myself.

Oh for goodness sake. GET OVER IT. These childish responses to the handball condemns any supposed football fan who displayes them. Then we also get the tiresome Anyone-but-England garbage. I was pleased to see that all three pundits on the RTE coverage yesterday afternoon -- Dunphy, Giles, Souness -- said they would be quite happy to see England. win. Grow up!

Absolutely. And the journo. supports US, then Ireland, then "against England". Racist bigotry. The majority of the Irish support English soccer teams! And the majority of the Irish are decent, rational people who don't harbour grudges. My English friends holiday regularly in Ireland and are welcomed there as friends and neighbours - the true Irish are bigger and better than this.

A totally silly article. No genuine football fan holds these childish grudges. There are reasons to favor whoever is playing France, but childish petulance about a bad refereeing decision is not one of them. And by the way, our correspondent is obviously ignorant of the rules of the game--you can't disown a goal that the ref has allowed. And blame FIFA if you think there should have been a replay.
