Tom Brady versus Michael Vick - no contest for NFL MVP title

Unbelievably there are a number of writers who actually sat in front of a keyboard after the weekends NFL action and announced that the Eagle’s Michael Vick was their favored NFL MVP candidate.

Comeback played of the year, sure, but MVP, not a snowball's chance in hell.

This is a ridiculously short sighted reaction to one good game. The MVP award is thankfully decided over the course of the season, not one game, and Vick has not been MVP like for the whole season.

Let us imagine for argument sake the MVP award was handed out today and let's have a look at Vick against who most sane people are touting as MVP (Peyton Manning basically threw himself out of the ring with that unfortunate interception binge a few weeks ago, Philip Rivers Chargers are not too far detached from a .500 record), Tom Brady.

Brady is also at the helm of the highest scoring offence in football (30 points a game average), which doubles as the joint best team in football at 12-2. How is this even being discussed?

Look, note to those who think the MVP should be Vick. The amazing Eagles comeback was a wonderful NFL spectacle, one of the best games in years. However, it should not have sent you careening to the nearest computer to demand outrageously that Vick be awarded the MVP. It was one game.

Besides at the end of the day, anyone who ever watched and got enjoyment from dogs killing each other should automatically never be allowed win anything, ever. I know the NFL is with me on this, partly because they wouldn’t be able to stomach the PETA protests tarnishing their shiny Superbowl. Mark my words, no way the NFL allows Vick, and subsequently the Eagles, into the big show.

Remember that when the zebras keep their flags in their pockets every time a Falcons lineman pummels Vick to the ground illegally in the NFC conference final. Think of it as a 09’/10’ Saints in reverse. New Orleans were allowed abuse Brett Favre in the same game last season, with no intervention from a clearly instructed umpiring crew.

If Vick makes it that far, he can expect the same treatment. Dogs around the world, relaxing lazily around warm fires, will chuckle gently to themselves with each hit.

MVP? Morbidly vengeful puppies.

QB Rating - The 6.2 differential means nothing when you factor in Vick's rushing ability. The plays he makes with his feet more than make up for the slightly lower passing efficiency. Yards of Offense - 345.4/game, to Brady's paltry 246.7. Even passing, Vick has 282.6. It's not even close. Touchdowns - Brady averages 2.5 (he has 34 passing, 1 rushing), while Vick averages 2.87. Again, leans quite a bit in Vick's favor. Turnovers - This is probably Brady's main skill. 0.36 turnovers per game (1 fumble, 4 INTs). Vick has 0.82. Overall, Vick pretty easily wins the numbers battle, and if not for Brady's low turnover rate, it wouldn't even be close.
Why not add the rushing yards? Oh I know why, because Brady would probably have a negative. This is for the MVP not the Most Valuable Quarterback. Display all the stats.
i think both quarterbacks are doing a good job, but you gotta admit Vick is making a tremendous comeback from prison, dogfighting, and the very much publicity he's getting. i take my hat off to him. Since people want to still throw up what he's done, if it was you, would you still want people jugging at you? I didn't think so. Stop hatin on the man for who he is and what he is. He's got talent. He committed a crime a you probably have to but just didn't get caught. Either way both quarterbacks are good but only one can win.Congradulations to both of them hurray!
@DaddyMac22 said: "I think what Brady has done, with what most people (including those NFL coaches you mention) would agree is a 'lesser' cast, is more valuable." Your house of cards just keeps falling down. "Lesser cast"? Brady has 6 current or former Pro Bowlers in his offense (the 3 OL, Crumpler, Welker, Branch). Vick has 2 (Jackson, Peters). There is no doubt that Brady's offensive teammates are much more highly decorated than Vick's. Really, at this point in time, do you have any argument left for Brady? Everything you've said thus far has either been outright false, misleading, or terribly analyzed. But I guess you're a Pats fan, so much like the Bronx Bombers fans, that's to be expected.
Micheal Vick Rushing- 613 yds 8 TDs Tom Brady Rushing- 17 yds 1 TD Besides his Passer rating, Michael Vick has produced at such a high level in rushing, it is as if HE WAS 2 PLAYERS. A Quarterback is more than only a passer, but at Football player and his COMPLETE CONTRIBUTION TO THE TEAM needs to be looked at. Micheal Vick as a Passer and Rusher (thus as a Quarterback) has done MORE for his team. Brady wins the Most Valuable Passer Award. NOT, the Most Valuable Player. The most valuable complete Football Player is Michael Vick. Vick should be the MVP.
Vick is more diverse then Brady. He is a better athlete if you will. Not only can Vick run light years better then Brady but he can run better then alot of A list runners in the league. Vicks passing and srambling ability is lighting up the the Eagles. He has the teams respect and they give it there all for him. It seems his time away gave him a new appreciation for life and he is showing it on the field. He is like a man possessed. What he has done and is doing is remarkable. That said, Brady is the money man. What does he do so well that he should be MVP? Well lets start with his passing ability and reading defences like he has a decoder machine in his brain. He keeps the team on the same page, year after year with a winning attidude and committment to improvement. He is setting new records almost on a weekly basis. What some fans dont realized is he is a player coach,a mentor,a motivator, teacher and even cheerleader for his players. He is consistant and constant. He is the gold standard. He is the all around undisputed champ at his position.Brady is not a one yr wonder.he is the most valuable player of the decade, never mind of the year. I dont see any other athlete besting him this year. joe caprio
@TheOriginalWesW Mike Vick is 3-0 against the "strong" AFC as a starter, and he averaged 321 total yards and 3 TDs per game in doing so. Also, that "horrible" NFC East is 9-7 versus the AFC this year. Seems to me that if the NFC East is horrible, a significant number of Brady's AFC opponents must be worse than horrible because they're below .500 versus the NFC East.@DaddyMac22: Fine, if you think Vick's supporting cast is worse than Brady's, say so in your initial argument. You didn't. Instead you obfuscated significant statistics to make it look like a one-sided race so that you could throw up a cute picture. You lost credibility in the process. Again, be a man and write the article you really want to write. If you want to criticize Vick's criminal behavior, then do it. But don't outright conceal things regarding the MVP race in an attempt to take a moral shot at him from your high horse. In fact, the sanctimonious tone of your original post ("How is this even being discussed?"; "This is a ridiculously short sighted reaction to one good game.") is the reason why Patriots fans are becoming the Yankees of the NFL. Your premises have proven flawed (Vick was the more consistent player, and the more productive when in the lineup). Your argument thus rests on three things: 1) Brady played a full season and Vick did not; 2) Brady turns the ball over slightly less than Vick; and 3) Brady has the worse supporting cast (though you put a premium on Vick's receivers without doing the same for Brady's linemen, three of whom have been Pro Bowlers). If you're willing to hang your hat on that while ignoring Vick's more productive stats (TDs per game, total yards per game, etc.), then I'd suggest you stick to the football they play on your side of the pond.
amendment to last comment: can't "help" but...
I hate New England, I hate Tom Brady but I'd have to admit that his ability to lead his under-manned offense has been brilliant this year. Vick has played brilliantly but against the weak NFC and a majority of his games against the horrible NFC East (and I'm a Giants fan). I can hear it loud and clear From The Bleachers, Tom Brady is your 2010 MVP
I do not argue that Brady is the front runner for MVP, but I do think it's a much closer race than your article indicates. The Pats are the closest thing to a modern dynasty and easily thought to be a top 10 team heading into the season. The post-McNabb Eagles were expected to be in a rebuilding year with a talented, yet very inexperienced team. Vick has almost single handedly come off the bench out of nowhere to totally change their outlook this year. I believe he has led at least 4 fourth quarter comebacks this year and several more 2nd half comebacks. He has been at the center of 2 of the most exciting, record setting games in recent NFL memory. He has helped make up for a somewhat weak and injury laden D. While he might not put up the biggest numbers or perform at a high level every quarter...he has turned it on when it counts most. Numbers aren't everything. Manning has better passing numbers than Brady in their careers, but it is hard to argue that Brady is not better because he has been clutch when it counted most...much like Vick this year. The arguement about the NFL not wanting to see Vick in the Superbowl is ridiculous. If there is one thing the NFL puts above all else it is money and ratings bring in money. Why else would they flex the Minnesota game this week to primetime? PETA protests just add to the publicity which in turn fuels ratings. Vick may be polarizing but that just adds to his ratings appeal. Love him or hate him, he is one of the most exciting players in the history of the NFL and people can't help but want to watch and the NFL knows this. The "redemption" story line is an added bonus.
Why are such close-minded individuals allowed to publish editorials these days?
@ SillyIrishPeopl - Hi there, if you are abusive your comments will be deleted, see disclaimer above! That's cool, I respect your opinion. I don't agree though, I think what Brady has done, with what most people (including those NFL coaches you mention) would agree is a 'lesser' cast, is more valuable. I feel the final vote will vindicate my opinion too. Thanks for your feedback though!
Fine, because you deleted my last comment rather than editing it, let me try again. Mike Vick is averaging more total yards per game than Brady (305 to 255). Mike Vick is averaging more touchdowns per game than Brady (2.5 to 2.3). Mike Vick has been more consistent (Vick, in 11 full games, has never failed to produce over 250 total yards; Brady, in 14 games, has failed to produce over 250 total yards in 7 games). Mike Vick has thrown more interceptions (5 to 4 in real numbers, or .45 per game to .28 per game). And yet, for all that, it shouldn't even be close. Uh, okay, that may be true if you value .15 INTs saved per game more than you do .2 TDs per game and 50 more yards. But if you ask any NFL coach, they certainly don't see it that way. Your post was nothing more than a hit piece about Vick's past wrapped into a dishonest attempt to analyze the MVP race. If you don't like Vick for his behavior, then man up and write an article about it. But don't intentionally conceal facts about the MVP race when your main beef is with the dogfighting.
Surely if he looks in the mirror he will see himself? It'd be weird if he was Michael Vick writing an article like this... Anyway I totally agree. Vick is easily the most exciting player in the league and has had a really good year but he has also missed two games and been less consistent than Brady. Brady has been destroying teams. The New England offense is playing some of the best football in history and that is mostly down to his consistency and accuracy throwing the ball. Cian.
You are wrong and should never be allowed to spew your misinformation. First you intentionally leave off Vick's rushing stats. You just compare passing numbers. With rushing stats, Vick has 28 total touchdowns. You leave off the Redskins game, you bring you stuff from the past. You act like the NFL MVP is decided by old white men who wont embrace a BLACK NFL QUARTERBACK. LOOK IN THE MIRROR BUDDY, NFL MVP 2010 MICHAEL VICK!
