The "next Susan Boyle", how many times have you heard that? This week the British press was full of that with regards to Mary Byrne from Dublin, a 50-year-old supermarket check-out clerk whose audition for Simon Cowell & friends was scheduled for tonight.
Well, I just watched Mary's audition for the British X-Factor and the truth is I'd rather watch and listen to Mary {photograph} over Susan Boyle any day. Is she a better singer? I don't know, but based on this one 3 minute song Mary is a much better performer than Susan Boyle.
Maybe this will irk or even anger a few of you, but I find it very hard to watch Susan Boyle. Can she sing? Sure, but to me there's always something missing from her performances. I find it even more glaring when I watch her. I couldn't tell you what it is exactly, but I just don't enjoy watching Susan Boyle perform.
For that reason I think Mary has a right to feel aggrieved any time someone calls her the "next Susan Boyle." The contest has a long way to run and maybe it won't work out for Mary as it has for Susan Boyle - no riches, no fame, no tabloid pressures - but regardless Mary has the right to think the world of herself right now.
For a woman of that age, from a working class background and who admits to having a "low self esteem" to put on the show she did tonight was amazing. I hope she goes on to great success on the X-Factor, but whether she wins or not becomes rich and famous or not doesn't matter to me. As far as I'm concerned Susan Boyle should be so lucky.

There's room for both of them. Susan Boyle's emotional difficulties are renowned, so good luck to her. Mary is great and I love watching her, but it's not fair to compare them. Or necessary.
LoriMB1 | Sep 08, 2010, 02:30 AM EDT
A fan saw Susan arrive today 9/7/10 at LAX. I have a ticket to see her perform tomorrow on America's Got Talent, but I think her performance will be aired next week. Does anyone know?? Either way I'm so excited to be there!!!
flamefromlake | Sep 05, 2010, 11:23 AM EDT
Thanks, dianechu. Wow! What a huge event! I can only wish I were one of the lucky thousands who have tickets to see Susan's 9/16 Glasgow performance. But I'm sure there'll be videos to enjoy...Excited & anxious to hear Susan sing on AGT Wednesday. She's an awesome & very much loved lady.
dianechu | Sep 05, 2010, 12:42 AM EDT
Sorry about the repetition. Thought something happened to it when it didn't appear.
dianechu | Sep 05, 2010, 12:30 AM EDT
Flamefromlake, Susan will be performing on September 16 in Glasgow for the pope. There will be 100000 people there and it will broadcasted to a billion listeners

Flamefromlake, Susan will performing at Bellahouston Park in Glasgow. She will be singing for the pope. She will be performing IDAD, How Great Thou Art and an unknown song. I understand that 100000 people will be there and it will be broadcasted to a billion listeners.

Bless you Mary you were fabulous! You have a beautiful voice and you look fantastic. Fair play to you girl I really hope you do well you deserve it
javajak | Sep 03, 2010, 07:28 PM EDT
To each his own.
Conjoly | Sep 03, 2010, 07:09 PM EDT
Susan Boyle was more of a surprise, but Mary's better I think.
LoriMB1 | Sep 02, 2010, 11:53 PM EDT
My heart belongs to Susan Boyle. I love her and her beautiful voice, which can give me chills and can make me cry. As to Mary, I loved her song choice and her singing gave me chills. I would like to hear more from her, and I wish her all the best as she seems very nice. And back to Susan, I'm anxiously waiting for her new CD!!!
flamefromlake | Sep 02, 2010, 08:11 PM EDT
This woman, Mary, is probably a very nice person and is an average singer. She was very flustered at the end, blowing her bangs off her face and just about got thru the ordeal (for her) it was obvious. She brought quite a cheering section with her. Susan Boyle did none of this and sang with great poise and extraordinary vocal range and magical beauty of voice. She conquered judges, audience and the world. She cannot be compared to by anyone.
dublingausafan | Sep 01, 2010, 09:26 PM EDT
very sweet lady - nice voice -- but susan boyle has got the magic that has charmed so many of us and susan does sing from her heart and does draw her audience in- so take nothing from her- jw
dianechu | Aug 31, 2010, 10:53 PM EDT
Actually Susan Boyle has a more polished and beatifully poised prescence on stage. It exudes confidence, and the sound comes directly from her center. Its essence is angelic and stunning. Just watch the duet with Elaine Paige. It says it all!
gcwfromcanada | Aug 31, 2010, 02:58 AM EDT
I rarely watch these kinds of shows after 15 years in radio but I cannot remember the last time I actually got chills listening to a performer. Mary Byrne is not the next Susan Boyle - she is herself, a truly gifted performer who has at last, found her voice! Fantastic Mary! Best of luck to you on the show!
irishgold | Aug 30, 2010, 10:27 PM EDT
WOW go for it Mary looking forward to see more of that great voice
jenjen123 | Aug 30, 2010, 05:40 PM EDT
Mary is very good, but she is no Susan Boyle. I wonder when the media will stop using the next Susan Boyle phase. There is only one Susan Boyle. I know there are many talented singers in the UK, but there is something really special about Susan Boyle. I don't know what it is, I just can not stop listening to her music. Other contestants who are being compared to Susan are very talented and they are unique in their own way. Best of luck to all of them.
vickila12 | Aug 30, 2010, 04:14 PM EDT
Lovely and exciting....it is VERY difficult to do that song and many of the fabulous Tom Joneses songs...she did a great job...go girl!!!
javajak | Aug 30, 2010, 01:17 PM EDT
busterbrown, Your remark to dianechu is classic "the pot calling the kettle black". You're the one who is creepy. You're a stalker.
dianechu | Aug 30, 2010, 11:35 AM EDT
busterbrown, Get a double edged sword to fight the green-eyed monster. I'm rooting for you.
dianechu | Aug 30, 2010, 11:32 AM EDT
Busterbrown, I think you are obsessed with Susan Boyle. This kind of obsession has to do with the green eyed monster. I suggest you stop trolling and develop the skill so jealousy won't run your life.
busterbrown | Aug 30, 2010, 11:13 AM EDT
The whole world is NOT at SuBos feet dianechu. You are really creepy.
dianechu | Aug 30, 2010, 10:53 AM EDT
The Yanke, Susan Boyle doesn't have to be lucky because she has talent and also the whole world is at her feet and for good reason.
jan281939 | Aug 30, 2010, 10:48 AM EDT
I think Mary is one the best i have heard in a long time she is better than some of the singers of today
dianechu | Aug 30, 2010, 10:17 AM EDT
Susan is the one who moves people because of her gentle humble nature, beautiful voice, honest and lovely heart, and incredible story. Busterbrown, the reason people go to support her is because they love her. Has nothing to do with money. That's your cynical and creepy interpretation.
Beppenel | Aug 30, 2010, 09:33 AM EDT
What i think? Greetings from one of the biggest Susan Boyle fans in The Netherlands xxx
Searlit | Aug 30, 2010, 09:05 AM EDT
Great voice Mary has and she sings with much feeling. Applause, applause. I like Susan Boyle, too. They sound quite different, though.

Fantastic
busterbrown | Aug 30, 2010, 05:33 AM EDT
Anyone who thinks SuBo is good is wanting to be famous themselves. Thats why they keep sending her gifts hoping to get close enough to her to make that happen and even going so far as to plan a visit with SuBo and be her best buddy. Track her every move and publish a book about it in order to make some bucks off her. Trust me if Susan Boyle was all that famous and worth that much no one would be able to get within miles of her.
busterbrown | Aug 30, 2010, 05:27 AM EDT
The writer is comparing Mary to SuBo because she sings better than she looks just like Susan Boyle.
busterbrown | Aug 30, 2010, 05:07 AM EDT
Of course Mary isnt another Susan Boyle. Mary doesnt dress and act like a clown.
busterbrown | Aug 30, 2010, 05:03 AM EDT
Hey architect I seriously think it is you who has the big problem and is in need of help. Ask the doc why the truth bothers you so much and why get all sensitive when people are compared to SuBo? Geeezesss. Take a pill.
janetelayne | Aug 30, 2010, 03:03 AM EDT
Obviously, Mary has an incredible voice and I would love to hear her sing again. As to comparing her with Susan, they are very different in voice and stage presence. Susan's voice to me is beautiful, lovely, haunting and compelling and I never tire of hearing her sing. It ministers to my soul and spirit. What is "missing" from her performances is "movement". Physically she often appears "frozen", "wooden" and "stoic" but fortunately this does not not deter from her singing ability. Mary is definitely more animated which makes her more interesting to watch. However, while I enjoyed Mary's performance very much, it did not profoundly "move" me the way Susan did when I first heard her.
Architect | Aug 30, 2010, 12:25 AM EDT
Hey busterbrown. I seriously think you have a big problem and need some help. Do you LIVE to criticize Susan Boyle? You seem to hate her, yet you enjoy going from site to site just to tear her down. What has Susan ever done to you? Why don't you find a new hobby?
longislander1940 | Aug 29, 2010, 11:53 PM EDT
Beautiful voice. Good luck.
mtheresa | Aug 29, 2010, 11:30 PM EDT
Two totally different styles of singing. Susan still gets our vote if you're comparing "talent". There certainly is room for both and many more like them. Sounds a bit like a few bedgrudging Irish want to put down Susan the Scot!!!!!
RandyKay | Aug 29, 2010, 10:16 PM EDT
you're an idiot.
KansasUSA | Aug 29, 2010, 10:11 PM EDT
Totally different voices, totally different talents. Why isn't there room for both? Congratulations to Mary on an amazing audition.
Newrone | Aug 29, 2010, 09:23 PM EDT
Yeah, good for her. Who cares who's "better", they're both excellent & both deserve a singing career, however late in life. (Just check out "Norman Wickins" on YouTube, at 97 yo. I watched him sing & turned round to see the whole house in tears.)
jrsp1937 | Aug 29, 2010, 09:10 PM EDT
WHy does there have to be "the next Susan Boyle?" Susan is magnificent and captured us all with her beautiful voice and whole heart into her song. Mary from Dublin does the same, with a spark and warmth that embraces all who hear her. Both of these wonderfu ladies are in a class of their own, each of them, not to compete but to compliment. Both have that special quality of humility as well as courage to risk all in showing them to the world. I loved watching the judges faces, all glowing with admiration and speaking from the heart. And I agree with them, all. Of course it also helps that I am half Irish by heritage.
Lovebites | Aug 29, 2010, 08:23 PM EDT
Dear Good Human Yank: Whenever I read the headline "the next Susan Boyle?", my fur used to fly, but now, I think of it as a condiment to Susan's enormous talent, something that other's can try to emulate and attain. She has set the bar very high. We're happy that you like Mary from Dublin so much, and wish her the best, and you many enjoyable hours listening to her sing. But please exsqueez the fact that millions of us adore Ms. Boyle for innumbable reasons, including her voice and her nice cat. There's enough room in the world for many to be successful, including your Mary from Dublin. Off to take a nap, Lovebites
srcarrvt | Aug 29, 2010, 08:12 PM EDT
she does have a certain flair about her... but she doesn't have Susan's depth. good luck to her. but Susan's got my vote, hands down.
peterson | Aug 29, 2010, 07:58 PM EDT
Maybe, they should join forces !! "Byrne & Boyle" !!Sounds great.
GritsTX | Aug 29, 2010, 06:48 PM EDT
I guess I don't fully understand what people mean when they say "the next Susan Boyle!" There is only one Susan Boyle, period. Is this an unknown who can go on and be successful? Of course, but isn't that what these talent searches are all about? Please don't try to replace Susan Boyle or put her down with "other" talent......this lady is good, but no one will ever touch me like Susan has - NO ONE!
teddybear | Aug 29, 2010, 06:24 PM EDT
Mary is very good but Susan is so much better,, Bless both of them.
Efmc4429 | Aug 29, 2010, 06:12 PM EDT
Fabulous voice. I do think Susan Boyle had a better audition. Perhaps it was the song she chose. I certainly tink Mary has a great talent and I wish her all the best.
AmericanReader | Aug 29, 2010, 05:29 PM EDT
Nice voice, nice person, great effort, but really only ordinary. Better than Susan Boyle?, no, I don't think so. Susan is so extraordinary, and magical. Best wishes to this lady, but no, she's no Susan Boyle!
Deidra47 | Aug 29, 2010, 05:10 PM EDT
Mary is very good, just as Susan is. Don't take away from one's gift for another. Enjoy and appreciate both.
pomsarepeople | Aug 29, 2010, 04:42 PM EDT
Susan Boyle can sing. Period. Her voice is rich, melodic and she has a gorgeous vibrato. This woman has a different style but let's face it, Susan is better and can handle more challenging material. Nice try, though.
javajak | Aug 29, 2010, 04:25 PM EDT
Truer words never spoken, Trennie: Just mention Susan Boyle to get someone to read...whatever. This lady seems very nice and sings well, but another SuBo? Ermm, I don't think so. I doubt Simon will ever find another to compare to the miracle that happened on Susan's BGT audition. Hell, what idiot still thinks (& comments on) that she needed to "win"? She "WON" WITHOUT "winning" and everyone knows it. And deservedly so. Incidentally, there's a singer on the current "America's Got Talent" show, also compared to SB & better than Mary, IMO: Alice Tan Ridley. Still not another SuBo; so why these inane comparisons. Enough already!
busterbrown | Aug 29, 2010, 03:13 PM EDT
Susan Boyle is making millions off of other people kelliechang. That gives me the right to say whatever I want. If you dont like it then you shouldnt be reading comments other than your own. SuBo doesnt have a great voice and she not a great performer. She didnt write IDAD. She took claim to it - went ontage looking as ugly as she can be an made millions cry. Big deal.
MavisPike | Aug 29, 2010, 03:00 PM EDT
I hope I never get so old and pathetic that I feel the need to listen to either middle-of-the-road warbler. That really would be the time to pull on slippers and begin contemplation of the grave.
kelliechang | Aug 29, 2010, 02:34 PM EDT
@busterbrown I know why Susan hasn't sung for the Queen yet. I am from China, and I know a lot of people from England. They care so much about appearances, look at the way they dresses, and I am not saying they are wrong. Everybody judges people based on their appearances. If Susan were really pretty, would you and the writer of this article hate her. The answer would be no. If Susan is young, pretty with her angelic voice, I am sure that all the guys even girls will go after her. I am not joking. This is such a sad world that people are made fun of or hated because of the way they look. Look, eveyone wants to look good, have the best body shape, smart, weathy or healthy. Just tell me who doesn't want all these things, but no one has any control over these things. Let's say if they are not smart, is it their fault? The answer is No. You know Susan has a disability, right? So why do you hate Susan so much? Can you be a little kinder? I love Susan, and I just don't care what people say.
RobbCobb | Aug 29, 2010, 02:11 PM EDT
LOL - Well met Mary. Very gifted and sincere - I think she'd be fun to party with in a pub as well. Kind of reminds me of the fearlessness, openess and honesty of Dawn French.
Godscre | Aug 29, 2010, 01:40 PM EDT
Seems like a nice lady. Glad she got on and was listened to. Yeah! Go Mary!
busterbrown | Aug 29, 2010, 01:33 PM EDT
If Susan was such a big WOW factor she would have sung for the Queen already. Plus she didnt win first place. Theres still lots more talent just waiting to be discovered.
wilemina | Aug 29, 2010, 01:26 PM EDT
You're funny, you'd rather watch Mary sing over Susan but I notice you weren't above using Susan's name to get people to read your article. I guess you had no choice since people wouldn't have read it otherwise. Mary is a good singer but that's what she is and I wish the best for her. She however is not the next Susan Boyle. What does this make now #30 in the next Susan Boyles. I wonder since X Factor has a ways to go, how many more will crop up.
kelliechang | Aug 29, 2010, 01:23 PM EDT
There is no way, no how this woman Mary could be compared to Susan Boyle. Susan Boyle has an angelic voice. Susan's audition was a once in a life time reality TV moment in history. Mary is a great singer, but she definately doesn't have the wow factor or goosebump that Susan's voice has given us. Susan Rules.....
specksmom | Aug 29, 2010, 01:19 PM EDT
Go Mary!!
busterbrown | Aug 29, 2010, 01:12 PM EDT
Marys voice is clear and not scratchy like Susans plus Mary performs like shes not afraid of the stage like Susan who just stands there like she scared her spanix might bust open.
Ta28281 | Aug 29, 2010, 01:09 PM EDT
Also, sometimes I really don't like Simon. I don't understand why he tries to market every potential contantest to be the next Susan Boyle. He must know that every time he does that the press will have chances to criticize Susan or compare the two. The press are so cruel to Susan because of her look, disability or jealousy(this is a big bad world). Simon just wants money and tv ratings, he doesn't care about Susan's feeling.
Ta28281 | Aug 29, 2010, 12:58 PM EDT
I am so tired of these talent shows kept calling everyone the next Susan Boyle. They are milking Susan's name for all its worth. There will only be one Susan Boyle. Please do not compare these two people. Susan has a soothing voice, and no one could replace that.
carladrake | Aug 29, 2010, 12:54 PM EDT
I can not STAND Susan Boyle when she is singing, on CD yes and geting sick of her now. So move over Boyle woman and let Mary take over as she looks better and her stage presence is far cleaner.
nannymac | Aug 29, 2010, 12:42 PM EDT
She proves what we, who are not THE PERFECT body type, have always known. Talent can be found everywhere if one only LOOKS for it.
cardlady | Aug 29, 2010, 12:23 PM EDT
I'm proud for Mary BUT I never get attached to anybody till they sing more. She is good= there is no dubt about that.
Pebbles | Aug 29, 2010, 12:13 PM EDT
Sorry, but a Susan Boyle she isn't. She can sing but, her voice is not as lovely in my opinion and she doesn't have the charisma of Susan. I do not intend any slight honestly, I just think she is no Susan Boyle.
CherylJean | Aug 29, 2010, 11:58 AM EDT
I think Mary has a great voice and more importantly she has a fantastic and professional stage presence. She will go all the way to the top. In comparison to Susan Boyle, while both gals have awesome voices, Susan needs more confidence on stage. She lacks stage presence.
MalcomAC | Aug 29, 2010, 11:56 AM EDT
So what? Some people like the Beatles, others like the Stones. Do you have anything else to announce?
bronxjames | Aug 29, 2010, 11:18 AM EDT
What a fabulous voice and she seems like a very friendly lady. I think she's better than Susan (not taking anything away from her). Has anyone seen the 10 year old girl on AMERICA'S GOT TALENT? That young girl is amazing. GO MARY.
Costaprint | Aug 29, 2010, 11:10 AM EDT
Like others I do not like the comparison between Susan Boyle and Mary Byrne. I did not like Mary´s choice of song - I hate that song - whereas I did like Susan´s song. The only fair comparison, for me, would be to hear both of them sing the same song.
cartersmate35 | Aug 29, 2010, 11:04 AM EDT
WOW! I love it! I love Susan Boyle, TOO; but then, we KNOW the Islands are filled with unsung TALENT! Go Mary!
LinLinisme | Aug 29, 2010, 10:28 AM EDT
She is an OK singer, but can't come close to Susan Boyle. Mary is just a good singer, one who can sing at weddings. Susan Boyle is still the best. LinLin is me says so
mcdolan | Aug 29, 2010, 10:22 AM EDT
Spot on! She's fabulous, powerful, emotional and has stage presence when she sings because she's singing from the heart to the audience.
Yerffac | Aug 29, 2010, 10:22 AM EDT
Are Your kidding? Better than Susan Boyle? There is nothing sweet about her voice. Flat as a bloody pancake. Oh please..."something missing" about Susan Boyle's performances? What journalism school did you go to? If you don't know what is missing, then say nothing. "Something" is not enough.
Sweeneyastray | Aug 29, 2010, 10:02 AM EDT
The world is ready for Mary Byrne!!! Let us have more of her and soon!!!
shirleyo | Aug 29, 2010, 09:57 AM EDT
Is Tom Jones' talent as good as Andrea Bocelli? Is Mariah Carey's talent as good as Celine Dion? They're different and have varying audiences. Susan and Mary may have different audiences, or the same. Both have appealing talent. I love Susan's voice and think too, her stage persona needs a lot of polish. I think Susan's talent is best served, and will be, in her recordings.
kwhitely | Aug 29, 2010, 09:51 AM EDT
what a joy to watch!! Unsure for the reason for comparison to Susan Botyle...venue? nationality? Who cares?? Both of these women are talented and a joy to hear
eileenkny | Aug 29, 2010, 09:28 AM EDT
What a voice! She's not Susan Boyle, nor is she meant to be. She's herself, from Dublin. As for the low self-esteem gambit, she seems fine to me.
boydshield | Aug 29, 2010, 09:26 AM EDT
Well, there is a bit of a music and voice difference, isn't there. Don't get me wrong, Mary was dead bril, and if a cd comes out, I'll be the first in line here in the US to buy it. Mary, you were wonderful (and I got goose bumps listening!)
evny077 | Aug 29, 2010, 09:19 AM EDT
Good on ye Mary, up the Dubs!!
trennie | Aug 29, 2010, 09:14 AM EDT
Idiotic blog. As others have said, the only way you can get people to read it is to include Susan Boyle in the title. As you undoubtedly calculated. Poor Mary, X-Factor did her no favors with all that hype. Hope she does better in her 2nd performance and goes on to win.
irishforeever | Aug 29, 2010, 08:58 AM EDT
great singer she will go far
WoundedKnee | Aug 29, 2010, 08:13 AM EDT
Not a bad voice, but she needs to wash her hair.
SBVoyager | Aug 29, 2010, 07:25 AM EDT
Good voice and I wish her the best ... but she's no Susan. Susan Boyle has captured my heart and soul with her amazing voice and vocals. There will never be another like her ..... ever!!!
busterbrown | Aug 29, 2010, 05:23 AM EDT
Mary isnt bat crazy like SuBo and SuBo only sticks to songs that make people cry. When did SuBo ever sing a happy tune? Mary is playing the SuBo card by using low self esteem. Puleeeeeze. I would rather watch a normal person with a great voice. These sad sack people are sickening.
jacersisityourself | Aug 29, 2010, 04:23 AM EDT
Well now, Yank? - Good morning from here. I have enlightening news: I'm gonna be the next big star & I will knowed as Rolling Thoned Beatleth - all 5 (or was it 10?) of them. Watch out for me debuttin’ CD, exclusively awaylable on Blu-ray. No, no - seriously! Ah, now guyth and galth... This article of Yank's is either written under inthructionth of the Joke Brigade in ICentral's little repertoire of “nothing-else-to-write-about-so–let’s undermine-someone-famous-like-Mary-Byrne-who’s-a-SUBOwannabe”. Does “Hook, line and sinker” ring a bell for anyone? I’ll take bets: John’s been handed a brown envelope to follow IC’s Joker Brigade’s editorialist line, or else he’s in the mix of “No such thing as bad publicity” ppl’s payroll. All SUBO fins can now comfortably swim away from a fake hook-Yanking shork. *Jeeze! I just called the Yank a Fake!” – Panic, paaanic!! Where’s my SUBO lollipop when I need it?*
idafan43 | Aug 29, 2010, 12:50 AM EDT
Why don't you write how great she is and leave Susan Boyle out of it. I HATE that every newbie is compard to Susan Boyle. I can't stand any of them because of writers like you think "they" are better than Susan. When the Newbie's are harassed by the media for a month before their big show performance and hit out of the ballpark then and only then should "they" be considered better than Susan Boyle.

Well now aren't you something Mr Yank. You claim you don't care for other journalists using the term 'The Next Susan Boyle' and yet you come under the radar pretty much doing the same thing. Wouldn't happen to be that you know it puts the money in your pocket would it? If you don't like the term why should you advertise it yourself?

Well, Mr Yank, everyone has the right to be wrong. You do indeed have a right to your opinion. Thankfully, it is not shared by several million others. Mary has a very nice voice. I wish her well. I will not be buying any album she might make in the future and I would 1,000% rather watch and hear Susan sing. To each his own.

No offense to Mary, she seems a lovely lady and a good person and I truly hope she does well in the future. But....as far as the next Susan Boyle or better? No way! Susan's fans have a genuine love for her. I just know, for me, Susan's found a way to touch my heart like no other singer. There is only one Susan Boyle. Susan's fans know it. It's time for the rest of the world to give up trying to replace her. Ain't Gonna Happen!!!!!!!! Frannie

what do I think of this? I think you are nuts. the remarks are laughable, really. Susan IS lucky, and she deserves it, with all the hard work she's put into her singing career for 37 years (since she was 12. now that she finally got her break she's a popular singer who is making a lot of money. good for her! and it's great for us, her fans. we who love good music, Susan's voice, and can buy her cd. I love to watch Susan perform. she's the best. as for Mary, I hope she is lucky and that some very good things come her way.

To: The Yank Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion. You could choose to watch Mary and listen to her over Susan. It is your choice; However, I think you could be a little kinder. Susan has been bullied all her life because of her disabilities. I just don't understand why do you have to compare this Mary to Susan. There is only one Susan Boyle, she is unique and Susan's voice is angelic. NO one should be compared to Susan. I am disgusted with the media and the talent shows kept using the phase "The Next Susan Boyle". This contestant, Mary is very good but she is definately NOT Susan Boyle. I love listening to Susan's voice over and over again, even two of my friends from Japan, they have to listen to Susan's music every night and they don't even speak English. That is how special Susan Boyle is. Susan rocks!!!

Mary is good, but there is only ONE Susan Boyle. I wish all these media people would stop using the phrase, "the next Susan Boyle...". There will never be another Susan. Go Susan!

I think Susan is an incredible performer! She feels what she sings, and relates it to her audience. I've actually seen tears running down her face while singing as she puts so much of herself into her music. I have never felt a song so deeply as when I watch Susan perform! What a very special gift!

She is good, and I wish her luck. Anyway. She will not be the next Susan Boyle. Susan is an extraordinary phenomenon. Her fame spread on the internet globally and instantly ALL OVER THE WORLD. The media/papers didn't play any role at first. The power of the internet is a big threat to the media. Nowthey try to "create" You Tube phenomenons in advance, but that is not how it functions. Great! Let the internet community decide! And at the same time to UK people: be proud of Susan Boyle, she gave your ountry some positive PR.

Re "I'd watch Mary from Dublin over Susan Boyle any day", why don't you do just that and the rest of us millions will continue to watch Susan as we have daily since April 2009. You have to use Susan's name in the title in order to get people to read your article. How pathetic.

Do not agree with you at all. Do not feel her voice is that great but I do feel Susan has a great voice. I agree with KathyMu I have no interest to listen to Mary a second time.
KathyMu | Aug 28, 2010, 04:54 PM EDT
All of the things that you say about Mary are also true about Susan. From a working class background, low self-esteem, a woman of a certain age, yet she also put herself out there, and she was the first one to do it. Mary wasn't humiliated like Susan was, so it didn't take nearly as much courage. You're not sure if Mary sings as well as Susan, but you think she's a better performer. I buy music for the voice. I don't know about you.
KathyMu | Aug 28, 2010, 04:50 PM EDT
Not me! She's good, but that's not an audition I'll watch a second time.
