In July, I will have the chance to be in Ireland for a few days. I've been pouring over travel books, blogs, and of course Irish America's April/May 2010 Top 100: People, Places and Pleasures issue for the best places to go. I know I will have one day when I can travel (by bus, train, car) out of Dublin to one of the counties. I have no idea which one to choose! So I'm writing this blog post in hopes that some of you that have visited Ireland more frequently than I (I've only been once) can post their favorite destinations in Ireland. Thanks everyone!

My heart belongs to Donegal for the sheer beauty and culture of the place. The variety of ruggedness, mountains, cliffs,bogs,beaches and green fields is amazing...but too far for a one day trip out of Dublin, as are my other recommendations - Antrim Coast and Galway/Connemara. Wicklow would be my suggestion that is closest to Dublin. I really enjoyed my time there.

My best advice is to take a GPS with you. If you drive, you can take the "scenic" (although the whole place is scenic)route. With having the GPS, if you turn on to some of the back roads you end up going where tourists don't (nor the tourist buses)and you still end at your final destination. We ended up seeing the Kerry Cliffs that offers a view of the Skelligs & Puffin Islands.

I suggest you take the train to Galway. It is a three hour trip across beautiful Ireland. Galway City is lovely with a picture perfect harbor and lovely cathedral. The shopping is also great.

Best way to get around is to hire a car and do a round trip. I would suggest this route, Newgrange, Locks Distillary Kilbeggan, tullamore Dew Heriatge Centre, Birr Castle Gardens and telescope, Clonmacnoise where some of the high kings of Ireland are buried, Athlone Castle and M6 back to Dublin

Go to Galway its the best county in Ireland way better the kerry in the least

if you only have one day to travel outside Dublin, then Glendalough is your best option, only one and a half hours south of Dublin, very scenic and popular destination, weather providing!!!!
