It seems that Michael O'Leary, the CEO of Europe's budget airline, Ryanair, couldn't resist buying full page advertisements in the British newspapers today following Ireland's amazing victory over the English team in the Cricket World Cup in Bangalore.

Hi JCaulfield. I'd like to know more about 'googly' as I can't find a mention in your book "Cricket is an ancient Irish game". Thanks

Ireland is the home of cricket, baseball, golf and icehockey all of which have evolved from Ireland's 'stick & ball' culture. The Irish emigrants who played these games in foreign places all spoke the Irish language particularily when they played their native games in their adopted countries. Baseball was origionally called 'cat' Irish language 'to bowl', base is 'bas' meaning dead, end, finished and 'bunt' means advantage. In icehockey the area around the goal is the 'crease' meaning 'area','zone' and'puck' means 'to strike'.Irish words in cricket are 'duck' 'bail' "cricket' 'wicket' 'over' 'googly'silly' and 'golf' is also an Irish language word.

Re Towngate's comment. the term 'out for a duck' is actually an Irish language word, 'duairc' which translates; cheerless, gloomy, morose. It is important to remember that these games were played by Irish people who spoke the Irish language, eg; the base in baseball is 'bas' meaning 'end', 'death'
and 'bunt' is the Irish language word 'advantage'. Baseball was origionally known as 'Cat' which is the Irish language word for, 'to bowl'
see 'cricket is an ancient irish game' by J.Caulfield.

It's ok. I have published 'cricket is an ancient irish game' wherein I show how the prehistoric irish 'stick & ball' culture migrated from Ireland to become Baseball, golf, cricket and icehockey.

James Caulfield.

PLEASE BARE IN MIND that "Out for a Duck" has another meaning in Cockney Rhyming Slang! ~ ~ ~ Brolaur: Spot on! My dream team is Michael the Mercyful and Ming the Merciless to be installed straight into 'The Park' to cut Irish Public Salaries,Perks and Pensions - and Welfare Benefits in half. That would be a good start.

Good man, Michael! You are what this country needs NOW! You really should condider politics. I hope you are N0. ONE! on their list of business advisors. But none of them could stand the heat, so you wont be invited to the Kitchen Cabinet. Congratulations Michael
