No, this isn’t extra footage from “Father Ted” this is the uniquely Irish duck race.
On Sunday afternoon at the Castlemaine vintage town fair, County Kerry locals turned out to enthusiastically support the “2011 Castlemaine World Championship Duck Race”.
Although the winning race participant was hard to track down it seems that duck number 44 was first to make it across the line / get into the goal at the local field.
Breaking News - The organisers of the Castlemaine Duck Race have declared the result null and void and dumped No. 44. Apparently the “winner” was found to be a goose on the loose. Afterwards, the real winning duck celebrated in a local bar. A circus owner walked in and was amazed to see him tap-dancing a jig on top of a pot and, after a bit of gaggling, bought the duck from its owner for €1000 for his circus. The story goes that the circus owner raged into the bar a few days later, saying the duck didn’t dance a single step on the pot in front of all his audiences and demanded his money back. A customer asked him “Did ye not remember to light a candle under the pot?”
