A new study European study has found that Ireland has the most shoplifters per head of population.
The research also found that retail staff and suppliers are also guilty of stealing from workplace
The study was carried out by the Centre for Retail Research in Britain and showed that Ireland has high levels of shoplifting.
"Certainly for the last two years, Ireland has been at or near the top of the table," Professor Joshua Bamfield told the Irish Independent.
"It's also a difficult economic time for many. So why do they buy things that have 'fallen off the back of a lorry'?
"Well one reason is that they feel if they don't look after themselves then no-one else will."
"Shop lifting follows the same path as demand," Prof Bamfield said. "So just as young people are turning to rum-based drinks, shoplifters are also looking very carefully at that.
"Of course, stealing alcohol is very acceptable to other people. 'Shall I steal three bottles of whiskey or shall I steal an iPad?'
"It's very easy to get rid of the whiskey. You could do it within minutes after you leave the store."
The study predicts that Ireland will lose $53 million to shoplifting this Christmas alone.

As per my I.C. "sign in" I.D.... In 1958 I was (back then) justifiably sent to Daingean for 2 years.... Daingean which is now known as "Ireland's Alcatraz" because of the sexual and physical abuse that was perpetrated there; and that not only related to the two years I was there for being one (of two) who stole 35 shillings (= to $5.00) from a neighbor's gas meter...... Now,,,,, if the same % penalty was imposed on "the shoplifters" of today?
WE would have to take them out and put them up against the wall and shoot the bastards!!..........
With the above said.. The facts related to the above molestings were sent via D.V.D. copies to Irish Central's Niall O'Dowd..... Who would not print a word of it..... And that because the molesting(s) that were perpetrated at Daingean were at a 20 to 1 being related to Inmate on Inmate (instead of Oblate Brother on inmate) And that sick as that is!!!! It did not fit into Niall O'Dowd's Agenda.... I say today as I have always held..... Molesters are molesters... And that be wether they are wearing a Collar or an inmate #.... And that will never change!! I gave O'Dowd this information.. But he failed to tell it on the I.C. To you readers... the true and full story about Empty Ball Sack Mr. O'Dowd, is for all at 951-264-7103...Paddy.
