Former Irish Prime Minister, Bertie Ahern, has appeared in a television advertisement for New of the World promoting his sports column in the Sunday newspaper.
His political peers have described his appearance in the ad as terrible for Ireland. The advertisement was discussed on RTE's (Ireland's national broadcaster) show, "The Week in Politics".
Ruairi Quinn, the Labour Party's education spokesman said "I thought it was terrible for us. As an Irish person."
Fine Gael's health spokesman, Dr James Reilly "We give the taoisigh (prime ministers) when they retire from office a driver and a car and a considerable pension so they don’t have to engage in this sort of thing... I don’t think it is appropriate."
Pat Carey, the Community minister said that you can not dictate what former leaders did in their spare time. He said "What the former taoiseach decides to do in his own personal capacity is up to that individual."
Ed Koch writes a column now. But I don't think he'd do a commercial where he'd share the spotlight with others. It commonizes Bertie, but sure that's not the worst thing.

The real tragedy is that the News of the World din't stick Bertie in a freezer and leave him there.

Shure will ye give the man a chance... he owes loadsa money to the benefactors in Manchester and elsewhere who put money into his begging basket when he hit hard times after his marriage breakdown. O’course he’s gonna do ANYthing to get a few bob... already got his daughter to write a book or two and flog them on the heel of the Bertie Ahearn name. Though he’s famous for hiding his sneakiness behind his charming character, hiding in a fridge sippin' ‘Iced Tea-shock” is new low for him. I thought his decision to stoop so low as to write for the gutter-press News of the World was bad enough... C’mon outa dat Bertie! This is no way to get a European Commissioner’s job like yr friend Charlie McCreevy, or a Banker’s directorship like yr old enemy Alan Dukes!! It just won’t look good on your CV.

Oh, Holy God. Have they nothing better to do? Leave the man alone, would ya? (Bit of a gas, really!)
