As freezing temperatures bring much of the country to a standstill, Ireland's cold snap seems set to continue for the coming days at least. But is it possible that this cold spell is the worst in Europe?
The map opposite was taken recently from the European weather emergency service and rates the severity of snow storms across Europe.
The scale of severity goes from green (safe) through to yellow and orange (potentially dangerous) to red (very dangerous).
Could Ireland's weather really be the worst in Europe and if so why does it improve dramatically when you cross the border into Northern Ireland!

This is not a weathermap at all! The RED denotes DANGER and is a warning to all other colours (including grey) to keep away! ....This rocky outcrop sinking slowly into the Atlantic is sparsely populated green desert occupied by a very strange race of "very dangerous" people who delude themselves that they have a purpose, value and some significance in the World. Do not enter the red zone unless you are prepared to have all your money removed for no return. But most of all: DO NOT POST A COMMENT – HOWEVER LIGHTHEARTED, AS THE MODERATORS HAVE OBVIOUSLY HAD A SENSE OF HUMOUR BY-PASS!
