| Leader of the Fianna Fail party Micheal Martin |
Who wudda thunk it?
Less than two years after receiving the worst trashing in Irish electoral history and falling from 41 per cent to 17 per cent support Fianna Fail are back.
Yes, that Fianna Fail, the party that was as popular as bed bugs in a nun’s knickers when the last election came around after their ‘light touch’ on regulation destroyed the economy.
Two opinion polls show them ahead of Fine Gael and every other party, standing at around 27 per cent.
In the immortal words of Gerry Adams, “They haven’t gone away you know.”
No, and they are back, but why?
It smacks of voter desperation frankly, and anyone but the current shower, to use an Irish vernacular.
Times are still very bad, emigration is an ever-constant, the EU bankers are not really lifting their boot from Irish necks over the bank debt and the decision to guarantee Anglo and other banks loans looks like it was a massive mistake. (See Iceland)

Despite the fact that it was Fianna Fail that took that step, they are now absolved from it. It’s like they went to Lourdes and worked a miracle.
It is hard to fathom the Irish voter. They were greedy too in the good times, and voters elect the governments they deserve.
Now they want to throw their toys out of the pram again despite the current government squarely facing up to their responsibilities and doing their best -- or so it seems to me.

That is obviously not the view from Dublin and elsewhere and vengeance is high on the agenda.
There was a media consensus that Fianna Fail would not be back in power for a generation, if ever, and the party would have a desperately hard time surviving but like lemmings to a cliff the voters are flocking back.
Party leader Michael Martin is clearly making a good fist of it.
Still, the results of these polls are shocking. Memories are indeed very short and demands to do better are heard loud and clear.
But the Irish voter needs to look in the mirror too to discover who is to blame for all this perdition that Ireland is experiencing. Voting for Fianna Fail will hardly make it any better.

It's kind of irrelevant due to the fact that any party which gets into bed with The FFs tends to be crucified - witness PDs and Greens.. therefore given the coalition nature of Irish politics unless FF swallow their collective bile and consumate a coupling with the Sinners .. or even more unlikely that Labour could stomach doing time with FF .. FF won't be able to secure a coalition partner. Who will want to be associated with them again if the junior party in an FF coalition always implodes.
So unless Labour/FG thorw all their toys out of the pram they could be around for a very long time (which is itself a slimy and disgusting thought given all the lies they spun prior to the last election) .. It's actually quite depressing. There's only one thing worse than having to look at Enda Kenny's smug self satisfied grin and that's Michael Martin's smug self satisfied grin.
St Patrick didn't in fact get rid of all the snakes .. they all just congregated in Leinster House.

The Fianna Fáil zombie, what a perfect description. A thing which bolsters its numbers only with a mass amount of disgusting mindless creatures who's sole mission in life is to destroy the people around it and consume their brains. My hat is off to you, you have them perfectly.

Parish pump politics. "Shur he fixed de road". The electorate are fickle. Before the current Government had the seats in the Dail warm. Members of Fianna Fail were leaving the Government like rats fleeing a ship at a new port. And now barely subsist on pensions of E150,000 a year. I couldn't possibly survive on that myself particularly as underpants and horse/donkey meat are so expensive these days. Its no joke to say I had a face like a smacked arse after I read this article. To think this party that presided over the ruin of this country, many now retired on a yearly pension of E150,000, are once again bucking to be in charge of the countries affairs. Its enough to make a pig vomit up its supper. They say people get the Government they deserve. If Fianna Fail get elected again I will immediately tell the Americans I've found oil in my backyard and hold the rope as they abseil down from their blackhawks. Heck I'll be running behind their humvee's catching the Hersey Bars Americans are renowned for throwing from their vehicles, as they set up road blocks throughout Cork. Fianna Fail again? For the love of God no.
