Rush Limbaugh denies term 'Paddy' for Irish is insulting
By: Niall O'Dowd | Published Saturday, May 28, 2011, 11:40 AM | Updated Friday, September 9, 2011, 10:13 PM

Talk radio king Rush Limbaugh decided our piece about him criticizing Barack Obama's trip to Ireland was worth commenting on yesterday.
Here is his take on our article that said Irish Americans would be upset that he used the term 'Paddy; to describe Obama.
RUSH: "Apparently I did a Media Tweak of the Day yesterday, and I didn't even know it. There's a blog site out there, IrishCentral.com, and apparently I've really ticked 'em off. I suggested that we ought to start calling Obama "Paddy," which is a rational Irish nickname for Patrick, just call him Paddy because he's out there saying he's the most Irish president we ever had. They say my comments are bound to cause controversy with my Irish Americans because Paddy is offensive and used in a pejorative context. Really? I had no clue. So another bunch people offended. My gosh, you cannot avoid 'em."
If he had no clue that the term Paddy is often seen as pejorative I am a little surprised.
Calling every person of a particular race by one specific name, whether it is Paddies, Guido, Hymies (remember Jesse Jackson?) is considered offensive by many especially those on the receiving end.
I don' say this as a politically correct point, I say it as a fact.
Racists like 19th century Punch cartoonist Thomas Nast used Paddy all the time as a pejorative to describe the Irish who landed in America, He portrayed Irish Catholics as ape-like creatures.
The term 'Paddy' is definitely seen as pejorative in Britain where it carries a harder edge than in Ireland or over here.
I'm not saying it is the greatest insult in the world or even close, but it is seen as pejorative by many , unlike what Rush says.
Paddy no more is what I say.

Rush is a drug addict, a closet-case whose days are numbered. Typical Republican.
RthrBHistCorr | May 30, 2011, 06:28 PM EDT
Funny "Niger" comes from the latin for Black so I guess that is as rational a nickname for African Americans a s "Paddy" for the Irish. So why does Mr. Limbaugh (and in fairness the rest of the Media) ban "Niger"but they think "Paddy" is just good fun? The answer is we let them away with it and don't contact sponsors to withdraw support.
mayoman | May 30, 2011, 07:20 AM EDT
Let's cut the baloney. "Paddy" used in this context is clearly a slur, and Limbaugh meant it as such.
seanomelbourne | May 29, 2011, 08:13 PM EDT
Fatboy denigrates Obama at every turn why should this use of "Paddy" be any different.
Gearoid4 | May 29, 2011, 03:02 PM EDT
Bejabbbers! every dacent Mick will taik up da shilelagh and give Limbaugh a good shellacking fur callin' him Paddy!
dubya4517 | May 29, 2011, 02:56 PM EDT
I think all one needs to do is go to the little Google site search and put in the word "paddy" to get a better perspective on this bit of a fuss. See the complete lack of offense about the nickname in a March 29 column. Paddy Duffy might also have a different take. Once again, a phony issue.
jamthecat | May 29, 2011, 11:48 AM EDT
When Rush says it, it's meant as an insult...whether you think it IS an insulting word or not. That's all the man lives for is belittling those he doesn't like, so when he says Obama should be called "Paddy", he does NOT mean it as a term of endearment.
antoman | May 29, 2011, 10:14 AM EDT
@gobdawpaddy-Try visiting the 30% that hang out at straight bars.Might change your perspective in every way.

gobdawpaddy | May 29, 2011, 08:20 AM EDT
Never thought I might agree with something Rush said but have spent two weeks here (Ireland) and have come to the conclusion that 70% of Irish people are a bit on the shhhlow side. These 70% are bereft of intelligence, manners, social skills, common sense etc. Somebody needs to explain to Paddy that breaking wind in public to amuse your friends is not acceptable in the civilized world, that getting drunk to the extent that you have memory loss the folloing day does not constitute a night of 'great craic' etc. If you are in a bar here, reading your newspaper and leave your full drink on top of said newspaper to use the restroom, expect your newspaper to be 'lifted'. The same should be expected if you hang an umbrella on your stool with a full drink in front of it. Don't be so foolish to leave your change on the counter as is the custom in the states..Paddy will assume that you don't want it. They wonder as to why they have such a high number of deaths on their roads....one simply needs to drive here to understand why. They have to amongst the worst drivers I have ever encountered. I understand that several years ago there was a backlog of people waiting to do a driving test and some genius in the government decided that if they had got 3 learner permits, they could be issued a full licence without having to take a lesson or a test....ludicrous. Rush might be right about this shhhhlow, slightly backward race. Dacint papil tho.
geddonmikie | May 29, 2011, 06:24 AM EDT
Limbaugh is a notorious racist and has quite a history of racial comments, including comments he made about Donavan McNabb several years ago that got Limbaugh fired.
Niamhaine | May 29, 2011, 05:19 AM EDT
Paddy is to the Irish what the "N" word is to AAs. They will call themselves that very liberally, but if someone else not of that culture/race uses the term...let the fireworks begin. I'm not into Limbaugh, but I'm also certainly not into self-denigration. Stop using the term, and others will follow.
oaklongan | May 29, 2011, 01:31 AM EDT

oaklongan | May 29, 2011, 01:26 AM EDT
Senator Al Franken, Minnesota said it best in his book, "Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Slob", 'tho that's name calling like putting an Irishman in a "Paddy Wagon". Yes, and "Paddy" like "Mick" is derogatory... have heard these "terms of endearment" said "affectionately" and with malintent, by those who call Italians "wops" and Spaniards "spics"... This mid-20th-Century garbage-labeling needs to be "deep-6'ed"...
seagreen | May 29, 2011, 01:20 AM EDT
jnewnam, Limbaugh is such a heroic individual. Fighting his way back from a bad back with Oxycondin purchased by one of his servants from a drive through window at Rite Aid. It was such a battle that he had to load up with Cialis for his trip to the Dominican Republic to recover from the brutal experience he had been through. It could only be compared to the cyst on his ass that kept him out of the military. Limbaugh is a wealthy pimp, and has proved how someone of his ilk can prosper in this system.
Mike7571 | May 29, 2011, 01:11 AM EDT
I can't help but think if a left winger had said the same thing as Limbaugh, you wouldn't have blinked. On the other hand, at least you got a lot of free publicity...
Woodkern | May 29, 2011, 12:27 AM EDT
Mháirín67, Do you really think that these Freepers ever book flights over, or even hold passeports? I'd be surprised if they so much as step outside the confines of their mothers' basements, except, of course, to board the AOH-chartered bus to "da friggin' city" every March 17th.
CitizenWhy | May 29, 2011, 12:15 AM EDT
Perhaps Paddy is a perfidious term because it has been a favorite name among the English aristocracy.
seanomelbourne | May 29, 2011, 12:02 AM EDT
baileyBD!!Try using the N word and see the reaction you get, then go to Dublin and use the "Paddy"word and compare the reactions.
baileyBD | May 28, 2011, 10:47 PM EDT
I thought the irish were tough! My father is 100% Irish and I am an Irish American and I really am suprised such a fuss is being raised over this silly issue. He was using the term to point out that Obama is a poser and only Irish when it is convenient for him to be. Find something truly important to get upset about.
Mairin67 | May 28, 2011, 10:35 PM EDT
I can only venture to guess that the folks on here who think that calling anyone a "Paddy" in the context of knowing or assuming they are Irish and also not knowing their real name, is ok....You are 100% wrong and shame on you for calling yourselves Irish....you are probably the same folks who wear green on your flight to Ireland...cuz sure, doesn't everyone in Ireland wear green???? I've also listened to plenty of Limbaugh, I am ashamed to admit. He is pure entertainment and I can definitly confirm that he is an IDIOT!! And anyone who believes every word he says plays right into his money making media frenzy. Nice work!
398669 | May 28, 2011, 09:59 PM EDT
Since you're so big on facts where did he deny it?
seanomelbourne | May 28, 2011, 08:38 PM EDT
As an Irishman I can assure you that to call an Irishman a "paddy"is insulting and P-g Limbaugh knows it. pflynn70 and his ignorant friends also know but they would rather plead ignorant.
LilPaddy | May 28, 2011, 06:59 PM EDT
I was going to comment but read what pflynn70 wrote (2 comments below) and he expressed exactly what I was intending to say!!! Thank you pflynn70... Paddy.
JohnKinMD | May 28, 2011, 06:45 PM EDT
I just got back from Ireland and a bid bus used for party groups was called " The Paddywagon", and did they party.
pflynn70 | May 28, 2011, 06:41 PM EDT
It seems that just the poor idiot liberals are the ones who are attacking Rush for his "Paddy" statement. They look at anything to meet their agenda. I'm very much Irish, my name happens to be Patrick and I'm not at all offended.
haikued2 | May 28, 2011, 05:17 PM EDT
In Darky Kelly's one evening a fellow walked up, extended his hand and said "Hi, my name is Paddy O'Dei" My dear wife, thinking he was kidding extended her hand and said "And I am Molly Malone!" Well he was Paddy O'Dei and his business cards proved it. Obviously, he didn't think it was an insult to call himself "Paddy"... Do you think it is just the lace curtain Irish who don't have any sense of being Irish...seems they want to be English...don't forget your humble beginnings, it is what formed the good character of the Irish people who have had to overcome so much to remain Irish in their souls.
AMERICAPHILE | May 28, 2011, 04:37 PM EDT

AngelPrecious | May 28, 2011, 04:31 PM EDT
I have actually never listened to Limbaugh but with that said, I would bet that the ones bashing him the most haven't either. Possibly, they are like sheep, believing the opinions of people like the author of this article.
fedupirish | May 28, 2011, 03:53 PM EDT
Rush Limbaugh, excrement. Ignore him, and he may go away, as his ratings of late may suggest.
peterson | May 28, 2011, 03:27 PM EDT
I think that Obama should be more cautious of his comments. Much of the time his mouth is running and his brain is not in gear !! His speech in Poland was another example. He really does not have any feeling for eastern Europe has one of the first things he did as President was cancel the U.S. involvement in their missile defense system.
Mairin67 | May 28, 2011, 03:22 PM EDT
First of all, Limbaugh is an idiot. Nothing more to say there. Secondly, to jnewman...I would say that you are a lot more American than Irish based on your spelling "Paddie" which tells me you probably don't really know enough about Irish culture. The Irish are not thick skinned in reality. I do not mean any offense by this. The Irish can certainly hand out a lot of jokes but they cannot take them when the tables are turned. The term "Paddy" is offensive if you have ever been on the receiving end of it or know anything about how the Irish have been treated pretty much up to the time right before Celtic Tiger when suddenly it was hip to be Irish.
Woodkern | May 28, 2011, 03:19 PM EDT
RL should be more cautious of his comments on others' travels. Follks may start asking what brought him to the Dominican Republic

Poor Rush Limbaugh--cursed at birth--at the time of his conception, he was sifted throught the bedsheets. That's what causes his mindless comments.
jnewnam | May 28, 2011, 02:43 PM EDT
Mr. Limbaugh took Oxycondin for severe back pain and was not convicted of anything. He in fact lost his hearing. He fought his way back from his addiction and with a hearing implant fought his way back into his profession. Heroic, really! He is an insightful pundit full of wit and humor. He will not let the left a.k.a. socialist, get away with the lies they constantly tell. The Big Lie now is that Paul Ryan's budget plan will have seniors jumping off cliffs for lack of healthcare. Seriously,do you know any Irish American practicing Roman Catholic that would propose anything in any realm like it. Yet, that is exactly what Obama, his reelection team and Harry Reid are actually saying about the Ryan plan all the while the Obamacare bill has gutted $500 billion from Medicare.
susanna | May 28, 2011, 02:37 PM EDT
The term "paddywagon" was coined in New York City around the early 1900's. On Saturday nights they would pick up the drunks on the streets of New York City and most would be Irish. Thus the term "paddywagon."
artane5 | May 28, 2011, 02:31 PM EDT
All depends on how sensitive one is.. Im from Ireland and lived in England for a number of years and was called Paddy when a brit didnt know my name. I'd pay no attention to Limbaugh as he's supposed to be an entertainer
jnewnam | May 28, 2011, 02:29 PM EDT
Oh get a life! I'm an Irish American and am no more offended by the term Paddie than jokes about drinking and being Irish. You know, the Irish use to have a much thicker skin a.k.a. immune to insults/criticisms/cuts. Most have the charming trait of being able to laugh at themselves. Perhaps that is why so many of us do not, cannot think of Obama as Irish. Obama is so thinned skinned when it comes any criticism or difference of opinion. He just cannot take it.
Dompedro | May 28, 2011, 02:27 PM EDT
ah me some mean it to be insulting, some don't -- some find it insulting, some don't -- recall that there are many 19th and early 20th century songs written by the Irish, about the Irish, sung by the Irish (into the 21st century) that use the term ... remember ".......'s Green Shamrock Shore" and "..... Works on the Railway" ? And it was, I think, an affectionate name for one of the Clancy Brothers.
McNamara31 | May 28, 2011, 02:23 PM EDT
paddyRanger says "for gawds sake mcnamara grow a set will ya" Well being female, that may be just a bit difficult for me, however I think you should direct that to Limbaugh, the lowest denominator of a human, who makes a fortune demeaning people and hiding behind a mike to do it.
paddyRanger | May 28, 2011, 02:04 PM EDT
"pilib04" tis no more despicable than listening to that lying toerag obama........so get over yourself, unless you are irish born n bred....who are you to tell us real Paddies what we should be insulted by, my name is Paddy and I am NOT insulted being called one, I am proud of it, if Rush called me a Paddy that is fine, what is despicable is that he connects that obama fella to my name

It is despicable that Americans listen and watch this lying drug fiend. The guy inhaled more OxyContin and Hydrocodon than what could be considered humanly possible. Unless he's lying about it and was selling it on the side. Why on earth would a drug kingpin still be allowed to broadcast his hateful lies. Now this fat loser moron has the audacity to refer to "Paddies." Paddy, when used to refer to Irish, by non-Irish, is an insult to the Irish community. We should thank Mayor Bloomberg for opening this door to insults of the Irish community.

In over half a century on this earth I have never been attacked because of my Irish ancestry. My name is a definite give away. In fact, on St. Patrick's Day everyone WANTS to be Irish. I've been called a Mick (never a Paddy) but it was never meant pajoratively. The people that are making a big deal about this are more anxious to bash Rush Limbaugh than they are to be defending the Irish.
r.pavlick | May 28, 2011, 01:33 PM EDT
Grow up. I have four grandparents all born in Ireland - the term paddy is not offensive. This is just a cheap attempt to attack Rush.
John5319 | May 28, 2011, 01:18 PM EDT
Here the Liberals go again ... trying to link something to nothing, namely that of a 19th century CARTOONIST and his demeaning the Irish as "ape-like creatures" to what Rush said, it is a childish analogy. Just how does a WORD like "Paddy" infringe upon the sovereign individual view of his "race"? It matters only if you want it to matter!! The left is just showing the immaturity of a child, so grow up little children, you're not a "victim" of his rhetoric. Didn't mommy tell you that "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me"? Once again the children try to stifle free speech by calling words "offensive" to a "particular race". Furthermore the Irish are NOT a race, for a race is a distinct population of a species that rarely interbreeds with other populations. That is not the case with the Irish, who are an ETHNIC GROUP because they have a language, borders of a nation, and everything else that makes up their culture and traditions. We are all members of the Human Race, different from animals genetically, so race is purely an imaginary societal term of exclusiveness. Skin tones should NOT matter, unless you want it to matter to show that exclusiveness. The term "race" is not the inclusiveness that is the scientific species called Homo Sapiens!! It is the Liberals who love to divide by "race", and conquer because of the ignorance of the individual. And keep the "race card" out of the journalistic commentary.

Why would be give him further circulation other than the right-wing crackpots who follow nothing else. Too much recognition of what Rush says.
paddyRanger | May 28, 2011, 12:53 PM EDT
for gawds sake mcnamara grow a set will ya.....Rush has not said he does not MEAN what he said, he is saying he does not think Paddy is an insult to Irish, and judging by the comments here, HALF the paddies here are not offended by it, just the bleeding heart liberal fools who want to be PC, what is offensive is the have that fool obama connected to MY NAME ....

If you haven't noticed (of course you have), right wingers seem to always resort to labeling and name calling when they can't articulate specific issues. For example, what is the specific definition of a "liberal creep"? ... As opposed to a "conservative creep"???

It appears to me that there are some long-emigrated Irish who are properly stupid Micks. Paddy has long been a term of affection and one remembers WW II Wing Commander Brendan Éamon Fergus Finucane DSO, DFC & Two Bars, widely known and revered as Paddy Finucane and Lieutenant Colonel Robert Blair Mayne DSO & Three Bars, another WW II hero and Irish rugby international better known as Paddy Mayne.

Mickwall | May 28, 2011, 11:17 AM EDT
Pres. Obama did not say he is the most Irish President. This is being confused with his remark based on what was said in a humorous song by the Corrigan Brothers. The President said (and I paraphrase) that "if you listen to the Corrigan Brothers there's no one so Irish as me" - This was very obviously intended as a joke. You can read it in the President's speech on the White House website. The issue of using the word Paddy does bring up a serious point in the objection to the term "Paddy's Day" - it is "Saint Patrick's Day" and it would be nice to start getting some respect for our patron saint.

Two things: (1) Rush makes money by getting press and listeners. He is a smart man. He knows saying crude things attracts press and listeners. (2) The key point in the article is valid ... calling everyone in a group by one specfic name is meant to demean and disrespect. Right now you, dear reader, have just assembled the start of such a list in your own mind. (3) Summary: Rush is smart and deliberately offensive. It has made him rich (but alone).

Unfortunately so many could care less about truth they just look for for or make up whatever supports their version of truth. It's going to ruin this country over time without question.
ktrush512 | May 28, 2011, 10:58 AM EDT
Oh, cry me a river! You're going to reach back to the 19th c. to find an excuse to take offense? Why, because sniveling liberals have convinced themselves that the way to empowerment is to don the mantle of victimhood and then whine for handouts. Fortunately, the Irish who first came to these shores were made of sterner stuff, and through hard work and application of their talents, became one of the most successful minorities in American history. Too bad you socialist crybabies are still trying to convince us sons of Erin that we need a Tammany Hall to look out for us. Back in the early 20th c., the term "Fighting Irish" was a pejorative, too. It hasn't served Notre Dame too badly to have embraced it.
antoman | May 28, 2011, 10:56 AM EDT
This article also brings to mind an aspect of life in America and that is its gun culture. At gun fairs in America you can buy everything from a pocket knife to a 20mm chain gun with no identification required.Just cold hard cash.So would the inflammatory words spoken by Rush and other rabble rousers not be a cause for concern.I know there is freedom of speech(WBC picketing the funerals of fallen soldiers)so censorship is unlikely but it could be argued that Rush and others like him cause loonys to climb bell towers armed and cause carnage. The founding fathers in America must never have considered that the firearm would evolve to being able to spew out 30 rounds in 2 seconds as opposed to their one round every 12 seconds.

I get tired of the phony "You insulted us!" bandied about incessantly by O'Dowd - but ONLY when conservatives speak. The REAL insult is that Ireland took any notice that Obama came there to exploit them for reelection and then turned out to be of British ancestry when he toasted the Queen. O'Dowd and the other Libtards at Irish Central have only proven how limited their vision is.

Perjorative means a word that may be insulting. My son is Patrick...and we often call him Paddy. But, then, who has a name like Rush? Why not "Hurry", or "Speedy"....just kidding with you.
OrenTruitt | May 28, 2011, 10:41 AM EDT
Limbaugh is an idiot, didn't you know that? If his brain were as big as his ego he'd be a genius. But he has a point, in America, 'Paddy' is rarely used as a perjoritive; it is usually used as a 'friendly' term. Britain has a very different attitude toward 'Irish', sees them as lower class outsiders. America is made up of Irish who came here to make a better life. More than half of all Americans are proud to claim Irish ancestry. As far as O'bama's statement of being the 'most Irish' president....that's just more shite out of his lieing gob. I guess he never heard of John Kennedy.

Almost any word or name can be turned into an insult or statement of pride, depending upon how it's used. This includes the context or circumstances as well as the tone of the speaker, which can be very effective. And sometimes you don't know how the speaker is using it. That's when you have to ask before responding negatively.

As an Irish American, and one who votes, I'm not at all offended by the term Paddy. I named my son Paddy. Many Irish refer to themselves as "Paddy". I think you Niall are using it to attack Rush Limbaugh because you don't like his politics. That's fair enough, you have your platform and continually shoot from the left. But please remember you don't speak for all Irish Americans or even Irish for that matter when you twist words around to make your case. Of course Obama is courting the Irish American vote, what do you think that whole trip was all about? Politically correct crap like this is a waste of time.

what the hell does "perjorative mean?
antoman | May 28, 2011, 10:24 AM EDT
Pathetic effort by Rush.We have an opinionated radio host in Cork who dealt with his dwindling listnership by masturbating on an aircraft flying from the UK to Ireland. He took the matter in hand so to speak.Course in Rush's case it would be more a matter of taking the bull by the torns. Now I'm not suggesting Rush should recreate snakes on a plane like Neil Prenderville did here. But it would drum up far more viewers than merely labeling a bunch of people paddys in the hope that paddys might tune in to.

I think Irish Central can find an insult almost anywhere. It's their speciality, the grievance culture.
biggles008 | May 28, 2011, 10:17 AM EDT
Paddy is Irish and always will be. I live in Ireland for 70 years . I worked in England in the 60's and anyone who didn't know my name started with Paddy.I'm still alive and happy today. Signed: Paddy.

Limbaugh is saint to oodles of paddies - says a lot. how stupid they be to follow the his ilk ...
eiregirl | May 28, 2011, 10:11 AM EDT
Wait, what? I'm A Paddy. I'm not Paddy. That's where the idiot Limbaugh went wrong due to his ignorance. Mick is only used in England and originated there due to Irish shortening Michael to Mick, and not Mike, like they do. My family in Ireland call me the Yank, I live in the South, and I take it with humour. Get over it. Seriously, Obama is no Paddy, we all know it, just like Regan and Kennedy before him, they are Americans with Irish roots. I'm a Paddy, and proud of it.

Rash Limberger makes money doing this stuff. That said, I've never had a problem with Paddy, what frosts me is " Irish Pennents "!
Clancey | May 28, 2011, 10:06 AM EDT
When has Rush Limbaugh said anything about President Obama that wasn't denigrating? Therefore, by definition, his calling him "Paddy" was meant to trash him!!! C'mon, Rush! Do you think we're as dumb as you are?
donal1951 | May 28, 2011, 10:06 AM EDT
I have reminded police officer friends, some of them sadly Irish Americans, not to use the term paddy wagon, as I consider it insulting.
paddyRanger | May 28, 2011, 10:05 AM EDT
olovely.........My name is Patrick and EVERYONE calls me Paddy and I am proud of it.....why would anybody be insulting me by calling me what I am? you need to lighten up........the only thing I find insulting is Rush wanting to USE MY name for Obama.
ellenfromcork | May 28, 2011, 10:03 AM EDT
Put Limbaugh in the Paddy wagon and take him away.

Obama never said he is the most Irish American president..
goldenblade | May 28, 2011, 10:01 AM EDT
Ajreaper - do you really base your reality on what the pill popping over weight serial marriage seeker loser Limbaugh says?
Ajreaper | May 28, 2011, 09:56 AM EDT
I was unaware Obama claimed to be the most Irish president ever- so hard to keep up with those who invent their own version of reality.
olovely | May 28, 2011, 09:08 AM EDT
'Paddy' is worse than calling someone a 'Mick.' It's the ultimate anti-Irish ethnic denigration, and Limbaugh knows that, which is why he used it. The poster below this, whilst attempting to defend Limbaugh, actually indulges in ethnic abuse himself. British soldiers called the Irish Paddy on every operation they took in the north.

Niall, a Padraig: I think you are being a bit sensitive here. Paddy is famously used as a derogatory term but equally as an affectionate one. It just depends on who is using it and why. Btw; The Queen is said to quite like "Ones new Paddy cairde's!" ~ Whooda tunk dat! ~ ~ Bt-btw: I hope Shame-us O'Bamaugh is not planning to bomb Asia because they call their rice farms 'Paddy-fields!'
