New York set for first Irish American mayor in decades after Weiner collapse-- Christine Quinn is now the hot favorite to take city hall

Irish American Christine Quinn is now odds on favorite to become New York's next mayor after Anthony Weiner's implosion yesterday.

She is set to become the first woman, as well as the first lesbian to become New York's top executive in 2013.

Quinn, whose grandmother left Ireland on the Titanic and barely survived, is a close associate of Mayor Michael Bloomberg who is set to back her in 2013 for the job.

I had the privilege to recently co-host a fundraiser for Quinn with hotelier john Fitzpatrick in Manhattan.

Quinn is extremely popular in the Irish American community and she wowed the crowd as usual. She would be the first irish American mayor since Bill O'Dwyer in the 1940s.

Facts are that the community was split between Anthony Weiner and Quinn. Through his wife, Huma Abedin , who works for Secretary of State Clinton, Wiener had deep roots into the Irish American community.

The Clinton name remains magic in that community and many were anticipating sitting out the mayoral race rather than siding with one candidate or the other.

That has now all changed and Quinn will be heavily favored with Democratic Irish Americans.

She is a tough campaigner, no doubt with the genes of her grandmother, who when the Titanic was going down refused to kneel and pray like many others in steerage were doing and made a run for it.

Now her granddaughter will be making a run for one of the top political jobs in America and looks sure to be the front runner and favorite.

Meanwhile Anthony Weiner backers must be wondering what happened,he had $4 million in the bank and a seemingly insider's shot at City hall.

That is now in ruins.

XXXMICKEY is right, Christine Quinn was one of Michael Bloomberg's loyalists who voted to give a "one-time only special exemption" to Bloomberg over the term limits limitation, because Bloomberg arrogantly screeched that ONLY BLOOMBERG could save the city. It was a slap in the face against fair government, and New Yorkers would be crazy to help Bloomberg by rewarding his sneaky minion this way. If they do, they can look forward to more Bloombergian excesses, and to more "one-time only special deals" to benefit the pals of Bloomberg!

PhlutiePhan it was her Grandmother on the Titanic, and a sensible irish women if she decided to fight for her life instead of waiting for death on her knees. If her grandaughter has some of her spirit she will do well. Can't say I heard that the then mayor in 89 was irish american. Did hear he was a great man for the poor and the minority.

I don't know why she'd want the job, but with all she has done for New Yorkers, there's no one who deserves it more than Christine Quinn. The voters will send Weiner back to the house, where he has been a voice for change, and surely he'll find a better hobby than internet sexting.

I figured you were going to identify one of the women as third-generation Irish, but I forgot all about Christine Quinn. Fair play to you, Niall. You Go Girl! Does my heart good to read this news! My Grandpa Longan was, in the words of Dr. Loyal Davis, who put a metal plate in his skull from World War II innjury... "He's ONE TOUGH IRISHMAN!" Neither Grandpa nor my Mother would have knelt or prayed, either, if they had been on the Titanic...like Catherine Quinn's Grandmother, they would've high-tailed it! I can say for sure. Wasn't in their Nature. As our late, Great President John Fitzgerald Kennedy brilliantly said (in like phrasing to the old-saying that God helps nthose who helps themselves up and onward in Life)... "Ask NOT what your country can do for you, but WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR COUNTRY."

Mr. Wiener may or may not know the damage he has done to non Republicans in this country. The tentacles of his action will reverberate through the electorate to a point where all social stance will be a moot point after this has played out. When asked about possibilities of work with the outfit that I work with, by two recent college graduates with engineering degrees, my honest reply was for them to became bi or tri lingual asap, and go to Chile, Argentina, or Australia. I honestly believe that the US is finished, and for an educated young person, it is time to get out while the getting is good. In my life, I could not ever imagine I would say that. Who cares if some Irish person is elected mayor of New York.

Who can now say that Bus-era warrantless surveillance does not pay big dividends! Thank goodness Obama has backed it fully and even increased it. Two recent examples; DSK and Anthony – both threats to the security of global bankers and both de-fanged in public due to traits that would have remained private in bygone years. J.
