Are these Romney folks for real?

Some anonymous advisors claimed their man a true blue Brit proud of his “Anglo Saxon heritage” in an interview with the London Daily Telegraph.

They sniffed that Obama would never sing “Land of Hope and Glory,” the ultimate British Empire glorification song, implying that Romney would.

Are they insane?

A foreign policy team member was quoted as saying, “We are part of an Anglo-Saxon heritage, and he [Romney] feels that the special relationship is special. The White House didn’t fully appreciate the shared history we have.”

It was clearly an ethnic slur aimed at Obama who does not have a drop of ethnic Anglo Saxon in him quite obviously. For “did not appreciate,” read, “Isn’t quite pro-Queen and Empire enough.” ABC news reported the comments as having “perceived racial undertones.”

The New York Times stated that it was an interview “in which an unnamed Romney adviser suggests that because Mr. Romney is white he has more in common with Britain than Mr. Obama does.”

It will also upset quite a few Irish Americans, especially in key states like Pennsylvania and Ohio, who will not be too pleased to see Mitt claim his British heritage quite so enthusiastically.

Rest assured that the Irish peace process would never have happened with Romney in the White House, he would have insisted as his advisors did that the “special relationship” with the British dominated all when that process began and American help was sought

If President Clinton had felt the same way and did not have the political courage to give Gerry Adams a visa back in 1994, they might still be fighting on the streets in Northern Ireland.

Romney’s advisors furiously backpedaled afterwards but it is too late. Vice President Joe Biden, a proud Irish American, was quick to the ramparts.

“Despite his promises that politics stops at the water’s edge, Governor Romney’s wheels hadn’t even touched down in London before his advisers were reportedly playing politics with international diplomacy, attempting to create daylight between the United States and the United Kingdom where none exists,” Biden said in a statement.

“The comments reported this morning are a disturbing start to a trip designed to demonstrate Governor Romney’s readiness to represent the United States on the world’s stage. Not surprisingly, this is just another feeble attempt by the Romney campaign to score political points at the expense of this critical partnership.  This assertion is beneath a presidential campaign,” he said.

Another adviser unbelievably told the paper, “Obama is a left-winger. He doesn’t value the NATO alliance as much. He’s very comfortable with American decline and the traditional alliances don’t mean as much to him. He wouldn’t like singing ‘Land of Hope and Glory.’”

For those of you unfamiliar, “Land of Hope and Glory” is a song about the magnificence of the British Empire. No self-respecting American president would be caught dead even humming it.

  Here’s the first stanza:
Dear Land of Hope, thy hope is crowned,
God make thee mightier yet !
   On Sov'ran brows, beloved, renowned,
Once more thy crown is set.
Thine equal laws, by Freedom gained,
      Have ruled thee well and long ;
By Freedom gained, by Truth maintained,
      Thine Empire shall be strong.

Jaysus, as Paddy might say. It looks like Romney’s foreign policy boys will be setting their clocks to Whitehall time and stepping back a century or two.

“Bow, bow to the Lord High Executioner” as the British composers Gilbert and Sullivan once wrote.

Someone needs to tell Romney we have our own country now and we ditched the Brits a few centuries ago and we don’t want to sing British imperialist songs either.

@KatieMurphy - They are all very well organized, Thank You! Now I spend my time reading about the crazy stuff done by the GOP and the Tea Party and I just have to comment on the inconsistencies of their positions or I will burst. Sorry if you see my method of lowering my blood pressure as silly. By the way, I agree whole heartedly with both of your other two posts.
Correct, Hancock. The end of slavery during the 19th century was due to the wide availability of Class D tools and the exploitation of fossil fuels. Regarding the US revolution, in substance it was a rebellion against a mercantile oligarchy which became over bearing.
England abandoned slavery when it wasn't beneficial to them.
Propaganda based on a quote from an unnamed sourse.
(cont) KatieMurphy Incidently, the Tea tax and 'no taxation without representation' was not the real reason for the revolution that created the US... it was basically allied to the fact Jefferson and Franklin among other slave owning notables in the 13 Colonies, had territorial claims into Iroquios Territory, which Britain would not permit due to the 'Great Law of Peace' a treaty between Britain and the Iroquois nations. These speculators wished to realise a profit and gain power tehmselves.

Then there was the American Civil war which was won by the side with the most men, that was the North who armed the immigrants, coming from famine and oppression in Europe, as they stepped of the boats and sent them to fight for their new adopted country. After the war, there was a glut of potentiial 'wage slaves'. In particular the Irish had set up ghettos in most of the cities on the East coast of the continent and had been employed to provide manual work over the previous 30 or so years. There was a problem, however. The emancipation of the former slaves, provided an additional workforce prepared to work for less than the Irish. This lead to many riots with the Irish Roman Catholic immigrants refusing to work '...for less than n****rs'. So you see the racism of the Irish, both Protestant and Roman Catholic, existed with the Irish Protestants racism, as you say based on biblical interpretations. while the Romam Catholic racism was based on bread and butter issues.
hi KatieMurphy. Unfortunately you are not quite correct. While slave owning was well established throughout the US, even your early presidents endulged in kepting, breeding (interbreeding?) and selling slaves, the practise became less rewarding financially in the north where there was a ready supply of 'wage slave' from the old countries of Europe. There was a disadvantage with owning a slave; they were property and required housing and feeding... you only had to pay a 'Wage slave' when needed and because there was an over supply, their wages were low. After the Brits educated you Yanks that salvery was bad by having the Royal Navy intercept and free slaves from American slave traders, slavery died a death in the Northern states.
"Romney’s advisors furiously backpedaled afterwards but it is too late. Vice President Joe Biden, a proud Irish American, was quick to the ramparts." Biden a proud Irish American? When? Biden is a member of the Board of Regents of the Smithsonian. The Smithsonian celebrates with elaborate programs every year (at taxpayer expense) Black History Month, Asian Pacific Islander Month, Hispanic Heritage Month. Nothing wrong with that but for Irish American Heritage Month (which has been stablished for over twent years) the Smithsonian does nothing. Mr. Biden hasn't been to quick to the "ramparts" on that issue.
"It was clearly an ethnic slur aimed at Obama who does not have a drop of ethnic Anglo Saxon in him quite obviously." Niall is your memory going or do you smoke something before you write these pieces to further your agenda? Don't you remember the guffaws as having a few days before celebrated his "Irish Heritage" the President in a speech before the Queen stated he came as "one of the millions of Americans of British Heritage?" Have you also forgotten the presidents mother Niall? She lists a much stronger English Anglo/Saxon Heritage than Irish. I wthink is is "obvious" that the president has more than a "drop" of Anglo Saxon heritage in him. The only thing "obvious" in your comments is (A) you don't do reseach and (B) you have an agenda
Looking good for four more years.
Ephraim stick to organizing your abba and john denver albums, your question is silly.
If this comment is indeed legit, he said nothing wrong. America was founded and most of its institutions, culture, and language are rooted in The British Isles.
If Romney lived in the American Colonies in 1770's, do you think he would have joined the Sons of Liberty or would he have been one of the Tories (loyalists?) Think about it Tea Party! Would he have been one of those destroying Crown property over a little spat about taxation without representation - how silly!
Tom do do - nobody cares what you think!
