Irish were once targets as Muslims are now -- we should not forget that

The Irish in America need to take the lead on the anti-Muslim sentiment which is now rampant.

We too faced discrimination. We should never forget that we had the ‘No Irish Need Apply’ signs to battle.

The downright anti Irish Catholic rhetoric lasted, in many cases, right up until John F. Kennedy became president.

The rhetoric back then was just as hateful and from some very surprising spokesmen.

“Faced with the election of a Catholic our culture is at stake,” said the Reverend Norman Vincent Peale, famous ironically for “The Power of Positive Thinking.”

That is what Norman Vincent Peale and others tried to do to Irish Catholics back in the era of John F. Kennedy.

The attempt to paint Muslims as other along the same lines, to portray them as evil ‘ an alien presence in our midst is an attempt to demonize large numbers of American citizens.

We have seen all this before. Writing in a journal called The Survey in 1912 scientist Lesley Goddard found "82 percent of Russian immigrants, 80 percent of Hungarians, 79 percent of Italians, and 76 percent of Jews to be morons."

There was only one moron and it was Goddard

"When fascism comes to America It will come wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross’ Sinclair Lewis stated in 1935. We should remember that in this period of race baiting and intolerant voices.

What is needed is dialogue and calm discussion, not demented appeals to our worst natures.
We Irish can help lead the way.

It is true that we should all be tolerant. It is also FACT that the Irish were treated horribly in America when they first came. However, what is also true is that Muslims are loyal to the Koran only. Any citizenship in any country does not change their core beliefs which happen to be that if you are not Muslim you have no right to live. The culture of being a Muslim is one of oppression towards women and anyone who is not Muslim. It is not a "Live and let live," religion. Therefore, although Muslim's should not be discriminated against, you must face the facts that to them, your life is worth nothing. I personally do not wish to live next door to anyone who has no love for his fellow man regardless of the religion. If I saw a child getting ready to be hit by a car, I would not stop to think..."Oh, that is a Muslim, Christian, or Jew so it must be God's way of ridding them on earth and so I will not interfer." We must not discriminate, but we must also be alert and sometimes that means we should not let everyone into the country until a point where education and ethics are realized.
galway...I'm with you all the way ,but,,,the Irish may possibly have misplaced a small explosive once.
your forgetting one thing, the IRISH didn't bomb any one so dont you dare compare the IRISH to the muslim
Well said Kell! Too much about rights for the "victims", an entrenched industry in this country. Rooted in the legal victimhood scams seen in the courts aided and abetted by the tort industry....Everyone's a victim. Time for personal responsibility in this country.
Niall, let the Muslims make their own way. Their behavior, attitudes, and actions will determine how they make their way in America. Each man and woman or ethnic group that comes to America has to stand on their own two feet and make their own way, with pride and dignity. Many of us find your common victimhood attitude to be a disgrace to Irish people and any people anywhere. I can guarantee you if I was a Muslim, and some silly sheltered liberal Irish American, like yourself, approached me with the "common victimhood" message, I would have zero respect for you. Nobody wants to be pitied. And your victim stance is pity. No good can come from it.
Niall cop youself on son.
Wow, your ignorance astounds me. You are comparing apples to oranges. I think you need to find a new line of work. This apparently isn't working for you. :)
The post from sept 17 4:06pm is not mine although I do agree with it. IC wake up & put correct name & post together. As for the last 2 posts, they left out except for the muslims. If I had a doctor & dentist that were muslims, there would be a need to check both ends after visits. (which was apparently lost on some commentators) Nothing was lost but common since & a lack to see the obvious by o'dud & the last 2 posts.!!
The Irish are loved everywhere now. That's all that matters. But the racism they experienced was nothing like what's happening today. Yes, there is racism directed towards Muslims, but it's generally as a result (unfairly so) of Islamic extremism. Racism against the Irish was based on ignorance. Racism against Muslims is often based on fear.
What Mr O'Dowd means is don't demonize anybody due to race, colour,or creed and that we Irish, as superior beings having the blood of saints and scholars and great intellect should be the ones to lead the way. I agree.
I do not need to defend Niall O'Dowd or IC but I would like to point out that O'Dowd was not comparing Irish immigrants, struggling to make it in a hostile WASPish America, to radical Muslims who strap on bombs and blow up people. He was simply reminding us in a nice way that we Irish were also despised and ridiculed (portrayed in newspapers as apes) and discriminated against in every way - and feared as one would fear the plague. Our immigrant ancestors had to first prove that they were essentially human and it took well over 100 years before they were fully accepted as equals. This, I believe, was O'Dowd's central point - which was, apparently, lost on some commentators. My doctor and dentist are both Muslim. They have been in America for many years, are totally assimilated, as are their children, and they love their adopted country. And they fear radical Islam every bit as much we do - and they also fear us, which is sad. I have no doubt that it was Muslims like these that Niall O'Dowd was referring to.
Comparing the Irish to the Muslims is rediculous. Muslim is a religion not an ethnic group. The Irish never tried to eliminate anyone not Irish.
O'Dowd, With this commentary you are a shoo-in for the horses ass of the year award. To compare Irish immigrants , who in the main were mostly patriotic, charitable, peace-loving people to these I hate America but I'll come here to see what I can get trojan horses is bizzare beyond belief.
be real about this! there is only one real cult that the muslims have it in for! the reason all the other christians are been targeted is the fact that since ww2 we have all been protecting this one ungreatful clan of terrorist bast-ards from the muslims! christians should just send this cult back to the lands they have been plundering! and then maybe we could have them all there when iran sends in the nuke! whats the bets, the world would then be at peace!
There is no comparison...Radical Muslims hate America, Jews and Christians. THEY "blew up The World Trade Center Buildings" not once but twice! They are a supposedly Religion...but I know of no other faith that advocates such hatred and encourages them to brutally murder Christiand and Jews! They can all leave this country and go home! There is No outrage from the "So called good Muslims"
