If you wanted an antidote to the gloom and doom that is pervading Ireland and its economic woes in recent weeks the Irish America Magazine Business 100/Hall of Fame awards were it. Irish America is our sister publication.

Overall, two hundred leading businessmen and women from all over the United States came to the New York Yacht Club in midtown Manhattan to celebrate their common heritage.

Former Coca-Cola president Don Keough,(pictured), was the inaugural Hall of Fame award recipient.

The Business 100 keynote speaker was Anne Sweeney, Co-Chair of Disney Media Networks and President of Disney-ABC.

There is no greater advocate of Ireland that Don Keough, now the current Chairman of investment firm Allen and Company.

He is also the unofficial chieftain of Irish America, a man whose influence rekindled the lost link between Notre Dame and Ireland.

At Notre Dame he created the best Irish Studies program in the world, and has been at the forefront of every major Irish American initiative on Ireland over the past two decades. I have no doubt that Coca Cola would not have settled in Ireland were he not at the helm of the company

Prime Ministers and presidents of Ireland have included Atlanta on their schedule in part so they can sit and hear from him. Recently, when the Irish government decided to open heir first new diplomatic mission in America in over 80 years it was no surprise that they choose Atlanta.

So when Don Keough talk people listen and they were listening intently at the luncheon.

He said it was time for Irish America to stand up and be counted and get behind Ireland and do their level best to help the economy recover.

Irish America needed to be cheerleaders for Ireland he explained, like never before.

Ireland had what few other countries had he pointed out, access to a worldwide Diaspora, millions of which were ready and willing and able to help. to What Keough told them was simple.

In what was a remarkable speech Don Keough spoke about being a captain of optimism, of helping to lead Ireland out of despond.

This too will pass, is what he was telling the Irish government and Irish America will stand with you while it does. At a time when Ireland is being assailed on all sides it was finally a message of hope and commitment.

He was in good company with that statement. Also present was Chuck Feeney, the billionaire philanthropist, Brian Moynihan CEO of Bank of America, Ambassador Jean Kennedy Smith. In all 35 of the Fortune 100 companies were represented, all of them cheerleaders for ireland.

Sure, the talk was of the troubles in Ireland and the desperate times they suddenly find themselves in. But the feedback from Irish American business was pretty direct – don't look back, get on with it, we are with you.

What I love about business people is they just want to solve a problem not dwell on it or admire it as others often do.
There are massive recriminations underway in Ireland, obviously, over how the economy foundered so totally.

A prime example of moving on for me was former Irish Prime Minster Albert Reynolds who had a business background when he came to power. Reynolds tackled the Northern Irish situation which most ordinary politicians had run a mile from.

He cared little for the history or the grievances on both sides, he was looking for the pragmatic solution.
With a combination of bluster, compromise and business savvy he played a massive role in the resolution of it
You have the feeling that Irish America’s business leaders would feel the very same way today about Ireland’s crisis.

Anne Sweeney, the most powerful woman in television in America, possibly the world, addressed why those Irish roots were so important to her. She spoke of a letter from her grandparents to her parents when her mother was pregnant with her and the dreams that s they had for her.

That closeness of family saw them through hard times and Sweeney was saying that unique family bond of the Irish would help them cope with their latest crisis too.

We had gathered at a vital moment for the future of Ireland. Its' Diaspora remains one of Ireland’s greatest assets, as yet utterly underutilized. Perhaps its’ time has come

Yes but we need to dump the banks debts first. There is no point putting anything into a black hole. The people in charge now are the people who created the black hole for their own purpose and continue to drain it.
Niall, I enjoyed the write-up, but next time use spell-check. You are supposed to be a journalist, but you would fail my English composition class with this one.
seamusdhu Yes it may be wonderful but let me ask you What exactly do you want Irish Americans to do to "change things"? Ireland is no longer an attractive place for US companies to invest because of the cost of doing business is so high(see Dell picking up and moving to Poland last year). Anyway, some Irish (like LoyalCitizen on here) think that US multinationals investing in Ireland is akin to putting Irish workers into servitude. As for Irish Americans buying Irish bonds (like American Jews buy Israeli bonds) as a show of support, there is a big problem. If there is little economic growth and resulting jobs in Ireland for the next 5 years, where will the revenue to pay off these bonds come from? Adopting the euro currency has proved to be, and will continue to be, Ireland's downfall. Yielding the control of credit in Ireland to Brussels led to easy money fueling the bubble; now, Ireland's lack of its own currency to devalue eliminates the less painful way of becoming competitive again. Ireland must now do an "internal devaluation" in order to bring wages and incomes to the point where Ireland is against competitive. That is a slow and painful process that can't be done overnight, it will take several years at a minimum.
I think its a wonderful thing that wealthy Irish people are beginning to look seriously at the fact that tens if not hundreds of thousands of young Irish are planning to immigrate. If the Irish government is unwilling or cannot stop this its time for the Irish overseas to get interested and change things. A nations treasure is its children. They should not become labor chattel in foreign countries. Ireland is a northwestren European nation. Its time it ceases to be the banana republic of the north Atlantic shipping its children out as cheap labor.. All Irish everywhere should boil with indignation over this. A mass immigration every 20 or so years. Lets all stop this now.
Go! Ireland.
Ireland needs an organization similar to the Zionist organization that Jews set up to help found and fund the state of Israel. With over 70 million people around the world identifying themselves as Irish to one degree or another. It should not be too hard to raise funds to establish industries and and business run for Irish people in common not for a select group of the people and to encourage immigration back to Ireland for those who can prove Irish ancetry or citizenship and end the basket-case economic attitude that has prevailed in Ireland since the 1800 act of union between Britain and Ireland and according to McKay in his book "Ireland Under the Union" was enacted to nip any native Irish industry in the bud so England would have no economic competition from Ireland.A condition that has lasted for roughly the last 210and threating another large scale exodusand has imparted an "immigration as the answer to economic hard times rather than change the system. Why don't Icelanders immigrate and Irish do?
Sending money is a pleasant thought but to whom or to what would it go? As a transplanted Irish American I can say we need JOBS here in Ireland, and we need TOURISM. We need the BRAINPOWER of Irish America to help get indigenous Irish businesses off the ground. And we need these NOW, to stop the outflow of the best educated Irish people to the rest of the world.
Absolutely the best way to go...Business leaders, fund raisers can get the job done and Ireland, people are not beholden to those whpo want to bail them out. I also think if an "Obama like campaign web site" was set up spo that people throughout the diaspora could contribute small and larger amounts to a very well managed bail out fund. It's well worth giving it the Irish push...Thy will be done
The Federal Reserve was forced today to show who the recipients of our money were to prop up banks and businesses. I thought the 3 trillion doled out was only for US banks, but the list of over 3,000 international banks and businesses showed some surprising recipients, the one that shocked me the most was the 130 billion given to GE (General Electric). Why in the world do they get any money? Could it be because they own one of the 3 branches of the mainstream media broadcast system, NBC? What did the obama administration get in return for 130 billion of our money?...Wouldn't it had been nice if Ireland got a bit of that, I'll bet it would have made a huge difference to the country.
Nice to see that they care - Anne Sweeney. she is a big deal
Don Keough is absoluetely right that Irish Americans need to step up to offer whatever support or guidance they can. The time to get involved is now. Our proud Irish heritage reminds us that century after century we have always heeded Ireland's call - and it will be a test of this generation's mettle to see how well we do it.
Great sentiment here, think a lot of people in Ireland need to think along the same lines. We need to focus on the recovery at hand. Also congrats to Don on the award! Well deserved.
It is great to hear a bit of optimism. With over 70 million Diaspora around the world they must be able to have some influence.
If referendums wre held in NI and the reoublic, what proportion of people would vote for unity ? About 25 % @ most.Republicans have gone noticeably quiet on the issue.
