Democratic near panic in Washington as Mitt Romney bandwagon rolls -- Contrast in mood with happy Republicans is very evident as race closes

| Mitt Romney Republican candidate looking happy |
Washington D.C: The contrast in confidence between
Democratic and
Republican supporters here in
Washington is striking.
Our newspaper Irish Voice hosted our annual
Legal 100 event here last night at the residence of the Irish Ambassador Michael Collins, and the talk among the well connected from both sides who showed up was all about the election.
There were many movers and shakers among the large crowd and the mood shift was evident.
Democrats frankly were grim. “It comes down to Ohio?” said a former prominent politician. “It did for Kerry in 2004 and he lost it right there and we could lose it too.”
“We have to hold Ohio,” said another stalwart and major fundraiser. “We have no hope other than doing that -- It looks like the ground game is the only way we can hold it.”
The main hope of the
Democratic side seemed to be in that massive turn out the vote effort. “It’s not the economy stupid,” said one political leader, “it’s the turnout stupid.”
A
Democratic foot soldier from
Pennsylvania talked about the massive effort underway there. “We will add two points to the polls,” he predicted.
Read more news from the US Election 2012 here Several referred to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s race in Nevada a few years back when polls showed him five behind, yet, because of his massive organization, he won the day.
Democrats frankly are reeling at how hard and how fast Obama appears to have fallen. The ABC /Washington Post poll on Thursday shows him three behind, a similar margin to several other polls.
At the end of September he seemed to be cruising to victory with polls showing him well ahead, now he enters the final week and a half gasping for his political life.
Republicans in
Washington have a pep in their step. “We’re ahead in the national polls, no doubt about it and the state polls will adjust,” said one big campaign donor many years on the scene.
Obama wrote off Romney far too soon said another. This is a fifty-fifty election he said, it was always going to come down to that.
Obama’s attitude in the first debate clearly cost him dear they say. He was just not prepped enough thinking he would easily deal with Romney.
One person discussed a recent lunch with
Bill Clinton saying there was no great wisdom there either, only a sense of deep frustration that Romney’s reposition had seemingly won over a large slice of the undecided.
Right now in
Washington the GOP are confident, even cocky. The next ten days will tell whether that is justified or a celebration too soon.

Pecos, I think I'll stay. In fact, why don't you answer a question that your friends are afraid to answer; if you are so superior, why do you have to cheat?
Pecos Kid | Oct 29, 2012, 03:51 PM EDT
Bigdaddy, go sell your garbage somewhere else. you don't intimidate anyone with your liberal bravado. Obama is a failed messiah you people bought into. No experiance, no ideas, no balls & no chance.
BigDaddy | Oct 28, 2012, 12:58 PM EDT
Arthur, it is a subject not carried by the MSM in America but there is widespread voter disenfranchisement at work by the RNC. This site will not allow links but if you Google BradBlog, you will be able to read for yourself what is going on. Good luck.
McNamara31 | Oct 28, 2012, 12:12 PM EDT
If Romney "the outsourcer" gets in, you will see a further erosion of middle class workers rights to a decent wage, healthcare, pensions etc. This is a man who was a pioneer sending U.S. worker jobs to China. Also, and most importantly the Romney/Ryan plan will bankrupt Medicare for those 55 and over, so don't erroneously feel if your above 55 your safe. The "voucher program" will pull all the younger, healthy people and their contribution, away from Medicare, leaving it with insufficient funds to survive. And lastly Romney is "very" willing to take this country into war with Iran; a war winch will cause a great loss of life and a far greater impact on our growing national debt. That's what a Romney presidency will look like.
Arthur Cola | Oct 28, 2012, 11:45 AM EDT
The national polls are certainly sources of peppy steps for the GOP but the toss up states, where the election will be decided are still too close to call or in favor of the PResident. So my advice is not to give up the ground game and not be too cocky about the outcome. I think this whole thing is a ploy to bring overconfidence to the opposition and in that lose the electio for Romney/Ryan. How's that for a conspiracy theory? Anyway both sides will have to fight hard for Ohio and now WIsconsin as well, if they hope to win it all.
BigDaddy | Oct 27, 2012, 07:11 PM EDT
That's it simply a cowardly way to avoid admitting to reality. Conspiracies take place every day, all over the world. Except your world. tsk, tsk, tsk
BigDaddy | Oct 27, 2012, 07:07 PM EDT
That is no more than a cowards way out of admitting to reality.
BigDaddy | Oct 27, 2012, 07:06 PM EDT
Just a cowards way out of discussing reality.
Smyrnian | Oct 27, 2012, 03:17 PM EDT
BigDiddy - I will give Elvis your best when I see him tonight at the pub. :)
BigDaddy | Oct 27, 2012, 02:32 PM EDT
Smyrnian, as I said before, you cannot accept reality and your stupid remarks make it easy for other stupid people to believe stupid things. If you are unaware of doing it, educate yourself. If you are aware of doing it, then you are probably being paid by the RNC to troll websites and deflect attention away from the truth. "If you believe that men would break the law, you are crazy" the song goes. Well, the RNC should get better for their money. If I were a whore, I would have accepted their offer and been a "freelance writer" too. But no matter how much you are paid to look stupid in public, you cannot argue the facts. And for that fact, the rest of us feel pity for you. Now put on your helmet and go over to Murph's house and play Mousetrap.
Pittsburghkid | Oct 27, 2012, 02:26 PM EDT
It over. All thats left is listen to Obama horse voice as he tried to convince Americans.
Smyrnian | Oct 27, 2012, 01:51 PM EDT
BigDiddy - you are right (of course) about the conspiracies being real. I ran into Elvis on at McDonalds today and he was asking for you:)
BigDaddy | Oct 27, 2012, 12:43 PM EDT
Smyrnian, if you don't believe conspiracies exist, might I direct you to the top of this very page. The Jimmy Savile cover-up was the result of a conspiracy, correct? So, powerful men conspire to keep someone who is making profits for them out of jail but powerful men would NEVER conspire to steal an election, is that your claim? Powerful men are criminals up to a point?
BigDaddy | Oct 27, 2012, 12:27 PM EDT
Big Daddy,as far as me being dim ,I'll match IQ's ,intellect ,and achievements anytime for any amount.Put up or shut up!...Well Murph, if that is true, you better start bringing your material soon. By the way your posts read, you should be wearing a helmet.
BigDaddy | Oct 27, 2012, 12:24 PM EDT
Smyrnian..It's not exactly the way you say it is, is it? It's not simply a difference of opinion. I express a belief, which is backed up by facts, and you paint me as an idiot who believes that Elvis is still alive. When I claim that you are stupid, you act as if I am being unfair to you. It is classic conservative clap trap to be sure. I need an advantage to have a chance. Don't do to me what I do to you. Boo fakking hoo.
jetsnoone | Oct 27, 2012, 10:40 AM EDT
Americans were under attack for 6 hours and Obama watched them die.... US Marines would have rushed to their aid, if given the order, or US helicopters could have responded....innocent by-standers?! Innocent by-standers would have run for the hills --- right thing to do was rescue these foLks --- but OBAMA DID NOT WANT TO!! Result: 2 dead Seals after an long battle....A tremendous scandal on Obama's part but liberal media scum will not call him on it.
Smyrnian | Oct 27, 2012, 10:32 AM EDT
Paul - It's a hard question because the Clinton's are very polarizing but then again, those who disliked the Clintons are often saying they would rather have them back instead of the current administration. Tough call.
paulpaulpaul | Oct 27, 2012, 09:49 AM EDT
I`m curious as to whether Bill Clinton`s support, insofar as it`s been apparent to date, has been more helpful to Romney or Obama.
Murph46 | Oct 27, 2012, 09:33 AM EDT
Your truth Big Daddy,as far as me being dim ,I'll match IQ's ,intellect ,and achievements anytime for any amount.Put up or shut up!
Murph46 | Oct 27, 2012, 08:49 AM EDT
Big Daddy -that is YOUR truth about the media, and you don't know shite from shinola based on your interpertation. The Libyan attack and subsequent murder of 4 Americans are my proof. You tell the Father of the dead Navy SEAL he is wrong!

"stmungo | Oct 26, 2012, 09:31 PM EDT Romney leads Obama in the white male vote. This proves the US is still largely a racist country" That is the most racist remark I have even read on a post. YOU should be ashamed. You are what is wrong in this wonderful country...GO AWAY!
borefield | Oct 26, 2012, 10:23 PM EDT
Stmungo, get over "the race excuse" it's non existent. You can't rely on that excuse forever and George Bush is happily ranching in Texas. LynnH, perhaps you haven't seen the latest Obama commercial, the one demeaning young women. It's a real insult and disgrace that the Leader of our country would stoop so low for a few votes.
stmungo | Oct 26, 2012, 09:31 PM EDT
Romney leads Obama in the white male vote. This proves the US is still largely a racist country!
Smyrnian | Oct 26, 2012, 09:30 PM EDT
BigDaddy - I am not stupid. No insults please; just a different opinion.
LynnH | Oct 26, 2012, 07:55 PM EDT
This election has brought out the worse in people. Never in my life have I experienced down right hatefulness toward not only are President but for our fellow man who may not be as fortunate as others. TRUTH! which I am finding more and more republicans having a problem with. I think the republican party is no longer a party but a mental condition. The senseless prattle over a definition of rape? PLZ its a crime! This type of thinking is very pathological at best! THE REPUBLICANS DIDN'T THROW OBAMA UNDER THE BUS, THEY THREW AMERICA UNDER THE BUS BY STATING OUR MAJOR PRIORITY IS TO MAKE SURE OBAMA IS A ONE TIME PRESIDENT! AT ALL COST AT THE SACRIFICES OF OUR SERVICE MEN, JOBS, HEALTH CARE, ECONOMY? SERIOUSLY? SHAME ON ALL OF U! I use to vote republican a few times when I had respect for the party and their candidate, now not so much!
BigDaddy | Oct 26, 2012, 07:54 PM EDT
What happened to my reply to Smyrnian? All I did was expose his stupidity.
BigDaddy | Oct 26, 2012, 07:44 PM EDT
Ah, Smyrnian, that's the best you can do? A litany of conspiracy theories that somehow relate to what I said? You cannot dismiss reality by resorting to the old "you-believe-in-conspiracy-theories shite that the right wing tries to employ so frequently. Conspiracies exist. Every day in America, the government arrests someone and charges them with conspiracy. Or is it only the working class that conspires to break the law in your world? Is that what they told you to say when someone tells the truth? The rich in America would never conspire to break the law. OK, Pinocchio, be a good little puppet and run along while the adults converse about the real world.
BigDaddy | Oct 26, 2012, 07:42 PM EDT
So Murph, here goes. The mainstream media is corporate and corporations are not liberal. They exist to make money, no more. Now, I will grant you, that some members of the media are liberal but they do not own the media and if you don't do as the boss tells you to do, you don't have a job, do you Murph? So now that we know the truth about the media, what about you Murph? Do you believe that all corporate CEO's are criminals because a few are criminals? I don't think so. You attack anyone who doesn't agree with you and assume they are as dim as you are, correct?
Murph46 | Oct 26, 2012, 05:48 PM EDT
No liberal media Candy Crowley(Moderator) damn near jumped out of her seat to answer a question of O'Bama during the debate. All you eejits who believe in no liberal media line up for some good swamp real estate!
Smyrnian | Oct 26, 2012, 05:11 PM EDT
No lies. No "stolen" election. Elvis is not still living. JFK is really dead. The Loch Ness "monster" isn't real and, sadly, neither is Santa Claus. Get a grip Big Daddy. Oh, don't forget, there us no liberal media. Who knew? Also, great idea, let's limit one's ability to vote based on formal education level. That's a really good one.
BigDaddy | Oct 26, 2012, 03:58 PM EDT
Pay attention to the photos of both candidates being published. Romney is seen smiling at all times and Obama looks sullen and grim. Forget any possible racial undertones, the media is in the tank for Romney because there is no liberal media. That is a fabrication of the corporate powers that own America; they did it to keep their dimwitted followers in the dark. The liberal media myth deflects attention away from all justifiable criticism of the corporate candidate. The "liberal media" lied about Gore, it lied about Kerry and now Obama is tied with Romney? Really? A fringe candidate with a fringe following is being made to look mainstream by a corporate media so when they steal another election, their followers will think they have won. Romney would be no more legitimate than Bush was and legitimacy is the key to what used to be free elections in America. At least that is what my polisci professors told me at university. But what do experts know in a country that values an 8th grade drop out's view as being equal to a PhD's understanding of a subject. We cannot be this stupid as a nation, can we? Will you let them steal another election without standing up and showing a backbone?
Smyrnian | Oct 26, 2012, 03:38 PM EDT
Looks like Obama and his clear socialist agenda are toast.
BigDaddy | Oct 26, 2012, 03:34 PM EDT
The post that refers to Greg Smith's book was not written by me.
BigDaddy | Oct 26, 2012, 03:31 PM EDT
AOD, I am going to assume that you are a real person for a second. Do you know how stupid you look for trying to belittle someone for still being pissed off about a coup that took place 12 years ago when your name indicates you might be someone who was still pissed that the British took control of his nation over 900 years ago? Being of Irish descent, you sicken me with your stupidity and how it reflects on the entire culture. But let's assume that you are one of those paid by the RNC to troll websites and put out the BS they would prefer people believe. The NYT idea is a joke. You cannot lie and make it true. Fortunately for you, this site doesn't allow links or I would would show the world what a idiot you truly are. The news consortium that went to Florida to investigate proved just the opposite of what you claim. But the besat part is where you call me a liberal. I am a great grandfather, a Republican but, first and foremost, an American who is pissed off about the corporate take over of my nation. And I think all thinking people know what actually happened to JFK. If you wish to continue this, feel free to make an ass of yourself as I will certainly feel free to eviscerate you in public when you do.
BigDaddy | Oct 26, 2012, 03:18 PM EDT
Thank Goodness for some of the great replies below..... Mitt Romney wants to take our our nation into a new age of backwardness. Romney/Ryan would like to reduce taxes on the wealthy and get rid of "big government" (no one really knows what that means other than destroying unions and getting rid of everything the government does except for the military), his tax plan has proven that the middle class will take this burden. He wants to demolish medicare, medicaid and the affordable care act thereby pushing more of a financial burden on the middle class. His social agenda is horrible... he is against gays period, he is against women and fair pay, he is against stem cell research, his environmental policy will create record levels of pollution because he DOES NOT believe in climate change (even though 97% of scientists do)...he has an actual history of loading companies with debt and allowing them to go out of business..... after the 2008 collapse we want to actually put into office a man who made money during the collapse and supports the institutions that got us where we are?? Read Greg Smith's book called "why I left goldman sach's".... it details the actual deceit from the top to the bottom of these bloodsuckers on our economy and romney is one of them, ryan is an actual lifetime "big government employee" what a hypocrite
MichaelJTully | Oct 26, 2012, 02:44 PM EDT
Myth Romney says he has a 5 point plan, over here in the emerald isle where we believe in leprechaun's, the end of the rainbow, and the pot o gold, we had a man with a 5 point plan. Sure as yesterday was the day before today, we voted him in, and low and behold, he threw the 5 point plan out with the baby. Wish you guys and gals out there make the right decision, or we are all fooked.
hollabackgurl | Oct 26, 2012, 02:43 PM EDT
Anyone who calls President Obama a Marxist or a Socialist ought to have their right to vote restricted due to mental incompetence.
louro | Oct 26, 2012, 02:04 PM EDT
For dear life, I cannot conceive how people who are not Republican Party paying members would want to vote for a man who wants planes to have windows opening. He "looks happy" today's title: is that a reason to vote for him? Disabled veterans and veteran widows are those he will deny any welfare. But when they were needed to go and do the dirty job, they were heroes. These people will not look happy if he took over.
wjb1tex | Oct 26, 2012, 02:01 PM EDT
"jerrydonovan | Oct 26, 2012, 11:45 AM EDT Whoever said that the Democrats are worried about losing Ohio clearly is not very bright when it comes to politics"---------------------------------------------I guess that all the TV commentators including those on MSNBC concede that the Dems are concerned about losing Ohio. And clearly Obama is spending a lot of time there for someone who has it wrapped up. He may or may not win Ohio and that is the opinion of virtually all the people in politics who must not be very bright.
lokionline | Oct 26, 2012, 01:59 PM EDT
At this point it is all hot air. The only poll that matters now is the one on Nov 6.
MariettaGator | Oct 26, 2012, 01:25 PM EDT
I am also an Irish Catholic, one that hasn't voted Democrat since the incompetent Jimmy Carter. Obama is the same as Carter, except he lacks any sort of moral compass whatsoever. I will happily cast my vote for Romney.
PhlutiePhan | Oct 26, 2012, 01:15 PM EDT
As an Irish Catholic Navy veteran in Missouri, I have begun a Novena (9 days) that the good Lord will intervene in the moral morass that was once the U.S. Republic. JFK as well as RFK inspired a nation. Now, we have a Marxist takeover of the Democratic Party with unlimited abortion. Obama must be beaten and then the Democratic Party revitalized in a conservative image along the lines of Stuart Symington and Jerry Litton of Missouri.
Aod ONiall | Oct 26, 2012, 01:15 PM EDT
Big Daddy still stuck on the 2000 election That is the whole problem with liberal democrats, always stuck in the past FYI the New ork Times when back to Florida after Bush was elected and recounted all the votes and it discovered that Bush won easily OF course they buried this result on Page 17 where only those really interested in politics would see it. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. What makes you think the this President's failed policies will have a different result given four more years . All you energy workers out there Oil, Gas and especially Coal, your jobs are going to disappear in the first year of a new Obama presidency. The days when the democrats championed the working man ended with the death of JFK!
pilib04 | Oct 26, 2012, 12:49 PM EDT
Niall, get out of the Belt. Ohio is solid for the President. If Virginia comes in for Obama before Ohio you won't even have to stay up. Otherwise wait for Ohio. You can count on Iowa, also. Ohio's jobs depended on the President. There is no going back.
Kevin Longan | Oct 26, 2012, 12:41 PM EDT
Boy, what a lousy choice for Americans! The elitist Romney or the hypocrite Obama, which is the worse of the two? I can assure you that I couldn't in good conscience vote for either of those pukes. At least Romney is true to his Republican roots while Obama secretly makes deals on bail-outs and dumping his health care plans; watch gas prices incessantly rise and the hopes of the American people fall regardless.
handsome68 | Oct 26, 2012, 12:34 PM EDT
Having been in Spain all month with a side trip to Portugal until a couple days ago, I may have missed some of the craic. Still, I can tell that many of youse liberal omadhauns remain unchanged in seeking that socialist paradise. I think Mr. O'Dowd is the one in the "near panic" of his headline.
BigDaddy | Oct 26, 2012, 12:31 PM EDT
There's the Niall we have all come to know and love! Let me ask you this; were any of those "near panicky Democrats" talking about the voter suppression efforts by the RNC? It stands to reason that they have more to fear from the Republicans cheating Obama out of a victory (as they did Gore) than they do polls which don't make sense. But as Travel said, we weren't there. So tell us, Niall, were the Dens totally quiet about the RNC cheating in this election as they did in 2000?
Padraig8 | Oct 26, 2012, 12:25 PM EDT
Just callin em as i see em, no names that were not deserved. When you on the other hand said "If Obama should win..it will be due to the Unions and the ignorant masses who still think they are going to get free stuff if he should win. Perhaps TV's along with the phones." That is calling Names as Romney did when he said he was not gonna worry about the % of people who allready had thier mind made up. As to your Daughters i suppose they did not vote for Bush a second time as that was definitely not working. i dont know about you but i remember what the Republican Party did to me in the Depression days so learn to appreciate what you have now because of what FDR and other Dem Presidents have done. Who Are the ignorant masses ? Stop looking down your nose at people who might not be as well off as you are.

71regiment | Oct 26, 2012, 11:58 AM EDT
I would think that the democratic party leaders are worried after all there efforts to paint Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan as excentric politicians, the country has found out otherwise. Even now the Axlerod team has put out a 20 page brochure saying that Obama has a plan for the next four years and this comes out 14 days before election day, yet most of it is trying to echo Mitt Romney's plan for the next four years. Imitation is a form of admiration. Some of you also slink to new lows in name calling, you need to be more civil in what you say on this site.

I never set foot in Ohio, but there were two 17-year old marines from Mansfield in my Platoon at Camp Lejune in Sept. of '60 during the presedential campaign and they were Kennedy supporters, as were the majority of the men in my marine company. As marines, we could easily identify with the Democratis candidate who was a hero of W.W.1 1.

At least 15 GOP Senate candidates OPPOSE abortion for rape victims. For them pregnancies resulting from these horrific assaults are "something God intended."Akin and Mourdock, as well as George Allen (Va.), Rep. Rick Berg (N.D.), Ted Cruz (Texas), Deb Fischer (Neb.), Sen. Dean Heller (Nev.), Rep. Pete Hoekstra (Mich.), Josh Mandel (R-Ohio) and Rep. Denny Rehberg (R-Mont.). There are also five other Senate candidates who hold this position: Michael Baumgartner (Wash.), Wendy Long (N.Y.), John MacGovern (Vt.), John Raese (W.Va.) and Tom Smith (Pa.).

Where do you get your information. Fox news? Shame on you.

olovely.... I find your comments fascinating. #1. What a elected Republican states about his personal religion...was known by the voters before he was even elected. The sex ad made was made up by the democratic committee. HUGE difference. What country do you live in? If you are an American, you have no clue about politics and how they work. There is no war on women. That tactic did not work, which is obvious in the polling. It backfired. The Liberals have used every single dirty trick, lie, they could come up with. People are seeing things clearly. If Obama should win..it will be due to the Unions and the ignorant masses who still think they are going to get free stuff if he should win. Perhaps TV's along with the phones. I have hope for those who are able to THINK and that they then outweigh those who can not.

Joseph Smith's notions now in White House to guide us. Who knew the brilliance that such a conman wrought. Romney his Bishop will steer us to a fitting end. Amen.

How much did the Romney people pay you to write this piece of fiction? More like the GOPs are drowning in flop sweat. Electoral math favors Obama. The only way Romney can win is if the voting machines his son's company bought in Ohio fudge the numbers.

Talking about spin here... Romney may be a whisker ahead in national polls because the professional Obama-haters will be voting in droves in the deep-red states that don't really matter in the electoral vote count. Electoral vote math still heavily favors Obama, showing him consistently ahead in all polls in Ohio, Nevada and Iowa, if he holds those three states he is reelected. In Colorado and Virginia they are at 48% each. Bookmakers have Obama at 70% chance of being reelected. Then there is Mourdock and Akin that show Americans what has become of the Republican party.

Sure they're going to panic. All of their cushy government jobs are at stake. They'll have to get real jobs and actually produce something.

We remember Stalin asking how many divisions Pope Pius X11 had. Mr Obama and his extremely Leftist policies on everything will find out on 6 November the answer to that question. His drone attack in the HHS Mandate exploded in his face and he succeeded in uniting the RC and Orthodox Catholic and evangelical, Moslem and Orthodox Jews around that one issue and sure has brought the nation together in a way he never thought. Secret weapons? an awakened silent citizenry, lies that were corrected with Truth and lots of prayer and fasting. Divisions you ask?

The sex ad you're referring to was made by women. That's a world away from the GOP's talk of "legitimate rape" and that becoming pregnant by rape being "God's plan." Romney hasn't condemned that talk so we must assume he supports it.
olovely | Oct 26, 2012, 09:33 AM EDT
O lovely...... again the Obama campaign just blew it with their latest sex ad aimed at single women. Married women are offended by it The back lash that started weeks ago is gathering even more steam. Women want Jobs and food on the table for their kids not condoms and jive.
olovely | Oct 26, 2012, 09:20 AM EDT
Ah, here. Every poll I have read puts the incumbent comfortably ahead, as I believe will the main one on November 6. The nation's not read for a Latter Day Trojan Horse or his bad math. Women especially has good reason to give Romney a wide berth.
