Washington D.C: The contrast in confidence between Democratic and Republican supporters here in Washington is striking.

Our newspaper Irish Voice hosted our annual Legal 100 event here last night at the residence of the Irish Ambassador Michael Collins, and the talk among the well connected from both sides who showed up was all about the election.

There were many movers and shakers among the large crowd and the mood shift was evident.

Democrats frankly were grim. “It comes down to Ohio?” said a former prominent politician. “It did for Kerry in 2004 and he lost it right there and we could lose it too.”

“We have to hold Ohio,” said another stalwart and major fundraiser. “We have no hope other than doing that -- It looks like the ground game is the only way we can hold it.”

The main hope of the Democratic side seemed to be in that massive turn out the vote effort. “It’s not the economy stupid,” said one political leader, “it’s the turnout stupid.”

A Democratic foot soldier from Pennsylvania talked about the massive effort underway there. “We will add two points to the polls,” he predicted.

Several referred to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s race in Nevada a few years back when polls showed him five behind, yet, because of his massive organization, he won the day.

Democrats frankly are reeling at how hard and how fast Obama appears to have fallen. The ABC /Washington Post poll on Thursday shows him three behind, a similar margin to several other polls.

At the end of September he seemed to be cruising to victory with polls showing him well ahead, now he enters the final week and a half gasping for his political life.

Republicans in Washington have a pep in their step. “We’re ahead in the national polls, no doubt about it and the state polls will adjust,” said one big campaign donor many years on the scene.

Obama wrote off Romney far too soon said another. This is a fifty-fifty election he said, it was always going to come down to that.

Obama’s attitude in the first debate clearly cost him dear they say. He was just not prepped enough thinking he would easily deal with Romney.

One person discussed a recent lunch with Bill Clinton saying there was no great wisdom there either, only a sense of deep frustration that Romney’s reposition had seemingly won over a large slice of the undecided.

Right now in Washington the GOP are confident, even cocky. The next ten days will tell whether that is justified or a celebration too soon.

Pecos, I think I'll stay. In fact, why don't you answer a question that your friends are afraid to answer; if you are so superior, why do you have to cheat?
Bigdaddy, go sell your garbage somewhere else. you don't intimidate anyone with your liberal bravado. Obama is a failed messiah you people bought into. No experiance, no ideas, no balls & no chance.
Arthur, it is a subject not carried by the MSM in America but there is widespread voter disenfranchisement at work by the RNC. This site will not allow links but if you Google BradBlog, you will be able to read for yourself what is going on. Good luck.
If Romney "the outsourcer" gets in, you will see a further erosion of middle class workers rights to a decent wage, healthcare, pensions etc. This is a man who was a pioneer sending U.S. worker jobs to China. Also, and most importantly the Romney/Ryan plan will bankrupt Medicare for those 55 and over, so don't erroneously feel if your above 55 your safe. The "voucher program" will pull all the younger, healthy people and their contribution, away from Medicare, leaving it with insufficient funds to survive. And lastly Romney is "very" willing to take this country into war with Iran; a war winch will cause a great loss of life and a far greater impact on our growing national debt. That's what a Romney presidency will look like.
The national polls are certainly sources of peppy steps for the GOP but the toss up states, where the election will be decided are still too close to call or in favor of the PResident. So my advice is not to give up the ground game and not be too cocky about the outcome. I think this whole thing is a ploy to bring overconfidence to the opposition and in that lose the electio for Romney/Ryan. How's that for a conspiracy theory? Anyway both sides will have to fight hard for Ohio and now WIsconsin as well, if they hope to win it all.
That's it simply a cowardly way to avoid admitting to reality. Conspiracies take place every day, all over the world. Except your world. tsk, tsk, tsk
That is no more than a cowards way out of admitting to reality.
Just a cowards way out of discussing reality.
BigDiddy - I will give Elvis your best when I see him tonight at the pub. :)
Smyrnian, as I said before, you cannot accept reality and your stupid remarks make it easy for other stupid people to believe stupid things. If you are unaware of doing it, educate yourself. If you are aware of doing it, then you are probably being paid by the RNC to troll websites and deflect attention away from the truth. "If you believe that men would break the law, you are crazy" the song goes. Well, the RNC should get better for their money. If I were a whore, I would have accepted their offer and been a "freelance writer" too. But no matter how much you are paid to look stupid in public, you cannot argue the facts. And for that fact, the rest of us feel pity for you. Now put on your helmet and go over to Murph's house and play Mousetrap.
It over. All thats left is listen to Obama horse voice as he tried to convince Americans.
BigDiddy - you are right (of course) about the conspiracies being real. I ran into Elvis on at McDonalds today and he was asking for you:)
Smyrnian, if you don't believe conspiracies exist, might I direct you to the top of this very page. The Jimmy Savile cover-up was the result of a conspiracy, correct? So, powerful men conspire to keep someone who is making profits for them out of jail but powerful men would NEVER conspire to steal an election, is that your claim? Powerful men are criminals up to a point?
Big Daddy,as far as me being dim ,I'll match IQ's ,intellect ,and achievements anytime for any amount.Put up or shut up!...Well Murph, if that is true, you better start bringing your material soon. By the way your posts read, you should be wearing a helmet.
Smyrnian..It's not exactly the way you say it is, is it? It's not simply a difference of opinion. I express a belief, which is backed up by facts, and you paint me as an idiot who believes that Elvis is still alive. When I claim that you are stupid, you act as if I am being unfair to you. It is classic conservative clap trap to be sure. I need an advantage to have a chance. Don't do to me what I do to you. Boo fakking hoo.
