President Obama’s trip to Moneygall, to his ancestral village, may be in jeopardy because of weather conditions.
The forecast for Monday May 23, his day in Ireland, is for persistent rain with strong winds which may well be enough to ground Marine One, the president’s helicopter.
If that happens the only access will be by road, but a White House briefing seen by Irish Central makes it clear that weather could play havoc with his plans.
The memo states “ If he has to drive because of weather it would be a long drive almost certainly too long of a drive even with a police escort. It took an advance team 1 hour 42 minutes to get there driving the N7, a divided four lane highway towards Limerick, a drive that goes by sprawling green fields and lots of sheep and cattle grazing.”
The memo makes clear the advance team also had a police escort.
There is precedence for a grounded presidential helicopter.
During one of his visits to Ireland, President Clinton was forced to drive from Dublin to Belfast rather than fly after heavy rain grounded his helicopter. On that occasion thousands showed up by the side of the highway to cheer him on.
Met Eireann, the official weather forecasting service. predicts that Monday will indeed be wet and very windy.
Their prediction is that “rain and strong winds will spread east to all parts overnight. The rain will continue into Monday morning accompanied by southwest gales with some severe gusts across the north and west. The rain will clear on Monday afternoon to be followed by blustery showers.”
Obama has a packed schedule in Ireland but a non appearance in Moneygall would be a shattering blow to the tiny Offaly village which has pulled out all the stops to make the president feel at home.
The world media has made clear his visit to Moneygall is the highlight of his Irish and indeed his European trip. They have descended on the tiny little Offaly village in huge numbers.
Fulmuth Kearney, the great grandfather of Obama’s great grandfather on his mother’s side left the village in 1850 to go to America, to Ross County in Ohio where his father had been left land by his brother.
Obama is due back in Dublin to his hotel in early evening and from then on to his public appearance in College Green in the heart of the capital city..

Obama probably has more enemies than any previous U.S. president including Nixon which does not help matters.
McNamara31 | May 22, 2011, 01:45 PM EDT
Per Skibberrean in his prior post: "He doesn't care about his WHITE IRISH HERITAGE! He is BLACK no matter what, if they are half of anything, they always go BLACK"...At least stand for what "you are" man. And for your story of your early Irish immigrant family; one thing is for sure you haven’t learned a thing.
Skibberrean | May 22, 2011, 12:41 PM EDT
Oh poor, poor McNamara! I an not a racist, nor was I raised one. When my people came to America through Ellis Island (LEGALLY)they were told no Irish need apply. G.W.Bush was not perfect, but we felt safe and he has the ultimate respect for our military. Unlike little Barry who had to be taught how to salute and that took awhile. God Help and Bless America, keep it safe from this Communist that is in OUR WHITE HOUSE!!
maloney | May 21, 2011, 10:41 PM EDT
I hope for Moneygall's sake obama shows up. deburca...you act like President Bush, who I'm not a fan of, didn't catch h*ll on IC every day for 8 years and is still being blamed for things today. deburca, deburca, sounds like a rag worn on the head in Detriot.
billyjustin | May 21, 2011, 07:51 PM EDT
look at lizzy when she went to the rock of cashel, clouds opened and the sun came out, when she left the clouds closed again, cop on pilots, we are in ireland where funny things happen..
skyrider | May 21, 2011, 07:41 PM EDT
If Marine One can't go beyond the pale, then nothing can. Go on Mr President. U R also leader of the brave N the land of the free.
deburca | May 21, 2011, 05:26 PM EDT
@kateomprint I think what they're afraid of is that the weather is going to keep the helicopter grounded. He's only there for the one day so driving may be out of the question due to time constraints. I hope he makes it though, it sounds like there has been a great deal of preparation.
kateomprint | May 21, 2011, 05:09 PM EDT
surely he is not such a wimp that he is going to let a bit of wind and rain put him off coming to Moneygall. Its what were famous for wet and windy. All of us who will be in Monegall are going to party anyway
goldenblade | May 21, 2011, 04:14 PM EDT
wilhoef - look in the mirror. Seriously folks - god gave us all a brain - some seem so keen in swapping theirs for soggy cabbage.
deburca | May 21, 2011, 04:13 PM EDT
@wilhoef - why would you be here "praying" for me? Didn't you disappear with the rest of the Right Wing in the Rapture today?? Oops, sorry, did they leave you behind? Well, the day is not over.
deburca | May 21, 2011, 04:10 PM EDT
seanaci, it is your perogative to vote any way you like. I happen to disagree with you. However, pick someone and vote for them, that's the American way. Online bashing of the standing, duly elected president (as we're seeing in every thread on this site that mentions Obama) is NOT the American way, it's the new teabagger way and it is tiresome. This article is about what might be very disappointing, if the weather keeps President Obama away, to the town of Moneygall where the residents have put a lot of energy, time and money into welcoming our President. Having policy issues with a president is one thing, but tbagger trolls and others claiming to have voted for him who saturate every blog that mentions his name with irrational hatred and bashing is not politics, political discourse or even normal behavior.
wilhoef | May 21, 2011, 03:48 PM EDT
It is an unfortunate reality that God makes idiots. It is obvious that deburca is one of them. Should we pray for him?
seanaci | May 21, 2011, 03:16 PM EDT
I live – and vote – in the US. I voted for Obama. It was a waste of effort and time. He sold “change” and “hope”. Change we could believe in. Change in the way Washington worked. Hope that ordinary Americans would have a voice at the table against the 2%. Yet nothing has changed. Hope has vanished. Health so-called reform was a corporate boondoggle similar to the Bush era MMA. Financial so-called reform left the same system in place and the same people in charge plus we have a gang of Scrooges and Gringes about to gut welfare systems to punish the less fortunate for daring to suggest fair taxation. Instead of changing Bush area lawlessness or holding people accountable, Obama has embraced it and added more egregious activities while blocking all efforts to use our justice system to investigate, compensate and, if needed, prosecute. All the wars – in reality occupations – continue and more were added. Efforts to protect citizens drag on and perish in Congress or the White House. But the Administration can act within days to go after Wikileaks. One scenario that explains it all is that global corporations are preparing for the time when the Asian markets are where the profits arise. With the help Congress and the Administration and, of course, the Supreme Court, they are conditioning ordinary Americans to renege on the country’s founding principles and accept minimal wages, unsafe working conditions, no freedoms and “disposability” in order to survive. At least then we might see manufacturing return. Obama is just checking in on Ireland to make sure that the same thing is being done there as ordered by international bankers to whom he reports. He and they should be well pleased with results to date.
deburca | May 21, 2011, 02:47 PM EDT
@Ailnsred1 1-Too bad Bush got Bin Laden, otherwise Obama could have done it - wait - Bush didn't get Bin Laden. Never mind. 2-Also, the royal wedding was not a state event and no heads of state were invited. 3-What does this article have to do with Bin Laden or the royal wedding? Oh, sorry EVERYTHING having to do with President Obama is an opportunity for loser tbaggers to vent.
goldenblade | May 21, 2011, 02:13 PM EDT
It's a good thing all the idiots are gathered at IrishCentral - keeps them occupied. In the meantime Ireland gets ready to welcome the most popular US president ever who has restored America to something worthwhile after Bush destroyed it methodically and its appearance overseas. I wonder if these Obama bashers have ever left the US? Or their State? Maybe they aren't allowed passports lol - thank God!!
Ailnsred1 | May 21, 2011, 01:50 PM EDT
3 things come to mind: 1-According to a lot of sources, they knew where Bin Laden was prior to the attack, but didn't get him until right before the primaries began....hmmmm.....; 2-He didn't plan a trip to Ireland until he was snubbed re: the Royal Wedding and knew the queen was going to visit; and 3-He didn't have major plans for Ireland until it was very evident that by doing so, he would garner the Irish American vote in a country that is looking for hope and is almost financially destroyed---what similarities could be there??????
pilib04 | May 21, 2011, 01:43 PM EDT
President Obama will be welcomed in Ireland in the same manner as other American Presidents of Irish descent. This should not come as a big surprise. Besides being of Irish descent, our President happens to be very popular worldwide. Too bad for the haters. Get over it.
irishcoffeekid | May 21, 2011, 01:41 PM EDT
deburca - i'm with you - lets just ignore those who cant even focus on the article they just read but use every story about Obama to slamdunk him. shows how unfocussed they are that they cant even focus on the article!!
irishcoffeekid | May 21, 2011, 01:39 PM EDT
Ya know, everyone is entitled to their opinion on how Obama is doing as a President - i live him, pay my taxes, pay my bills etc but I'm kinda more interested in how his visit is going to affect Ireland - if it helps bring more visitors to Ireland and gives Irish an opportunity to showcase the country and how accepting we are of EVERYONE, i'm all for it - i couldnt care less about all the bullshit comments about his presidency - this isnt about his success rate - the story is about the impact his visit will have on a small village in the middle of Ireland that is on the map big time and the excitement its causing to people who never thought they'd see the day an American President would come visit - get over yourselves about how he's doing - comment on the story we're referring to and take all your political slobber elsewhere - you're boring us with your dribble and look like total muppets to boot!!! GO IRELAND AND GO MONEYGALL. SHOW these muppets you're above all their crap!!!
walleyeman | May 21, 2011, 01:17 PM EDT
Me thinks McNamara 31and Deburca have the distribution rights to Obama kool aid in Ireland. To put it succinctly, Obama sucks. You can keep him.
McNamara31 | May 21, 2011, 01:07 PM EDT
@ deburca "Clapping" Well said and true. It's sickening how far some posters go to demean a president who is attempting to pull America out of the wreckage caused by the prior 8 years.
deburca | May 21, 2011, 01:04 PM EDT
typo: worthy
deburca | May 21, 2011, 12:55 PM EDT
Actually pounder, his grandparents and mother sacrificed a lot to send him to good schools. If only more grandparents and parents did as much. Too bad he's not a trust fund baby like Bush - then you'd think he was worth of being your leader eh?
deburca | May 21, 2011, 12:53 PM EDT
@Pounder, you are the idiot. This guy is the President of the United States and the Irish are the ones who traced his ancestry to Moneygall and as POTUS he is visiting Ireland and, hopefully, stopping by Moneygall as a courtesy - of which the people of Moneygall have prepared for and are looking forward to. Also, our president did not ask for the Nobel Peace Prize so get over it. Go find something to be for as opposed to against - you'll be a happier person.
deburca | May 21, 2011, 12:49 PM EDT
For the "uneducated" THAT don't think President Obama is doing a good job and type in all caps - find a better candidate and vote for him/her instead of bashing our duly elected president all over the net. As for the employment rate, President Obama, with zero help from the GOP managed to pull us back from the Bush Depression where we were hemorrhaging jobs and has been creating jobs since he took office. Also, with no help from the GOP, Obama and the Dems saved the US Auto Industry. Meanwhile the Republicans are ignoring jobs and focussing on such PRESSING NON-job creating issues as taking away the funding for NPR and Planned Parenthood... oh, and reading the Constitution on the House floor.
pounder | May 21, 2011, 12:37 PM EDT
Every native born Hawaian gets certain privileges be stowed on them by the Princess Trust, which fast tracks them to the best schools, best neighborhoods etc.No wonder mama Obama (anthropologist) anchored him there!I hope Hillary runs against him.
McNamara31 | May 21, 2011, 12:29 PM EDT
semperfidelis....No semperfidelis, only racist comments deserve a "racist label" and this past week there have been many on this site. Even though Obama was forced to show his birth certificate and went on to deal with Bin Laden, it's not enough for those who didn't vote for him in the first place, and never accepted him as one of us, or his presidency.
pounder | May 21, 2011, 12:28 PM EDT
Deburca...you are an idiot.First off, this guy is not Irish, and most likely not American.Nobel Peace Prize ring a bell, after what two months in office. The money men who pull the political strings positioned this inept hack into office.
pounder | May 21, 2011, 12:28 PM EDT
He is NOT Irish!
semperfidelis | May 21, 2011, 12:16 PM EDT
So anyone that doesn't fall in line and support everything the president does is a racist. That is as ignorant as those that don't like him or his policies just because of his race. I could care less what color he or any other leader is, if they promote an agenda similiar to his, I would be opposed to it even if said leader was Irish for instance. And Obama the most intelligent American President ever, on what do you form that learned opinion, that is laughable. And alot of the biggest problems in this country are created by the so-called "smarest guys in the room", ivy league types don't you know; I think they drop 200k at harvard et al just to get stupid.
jdi2269 | May 21, 2011, 12:14 PM EDT
FOR THE UNEDUCATED THAT STILL BELIEVE OBAMA IS DOING A GOOD JOB WITH UNEMPLOYMENT REMAINING AT 10 % AND 1 IN 8 AMERICANS NOW ON FOOD STAMPS, DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND GOOGLE "10 MOST CORRUPT POLITICIANS"
Searlit | May 21, 2011, 12:07 PM EDT
I wouldn't worry, too much. I live in New England. Our most famous quote is "If you don't like the weather, wait a minute." Ireland usually gets the weather systems after they've gone by us out to the Atlantic. We did just have 6 days of rain. The wind wasn't that strong, though.
deburca | May 21, 2011, 12:02 PM EDT
irishcoffeekid - I'm with you. I hope the people of Moneygall are not disappointed. They've planned too hard for this to be let down. Also, it is really too bad this site is being taken over by tbagger tr0lls (ie wilhoef, et.) from the US - as it is airing our dirty laundry.
carrickcourt | May 21, 2011, 12:02 PM EDT
As always only the 'brilliant' racist comments concerning President Obama appear here. I suppose any hope for comments concerning the most intelligent Irish American President we have ever had, President Obama, cannot be hoped for here.
deburca | May 21, 2011, 11:58 AM EDT
wilhoef you don't know shite about history and you suffer from ODS and should seek help. Do you just go from blog to blog looking for opportunities to bash our president? Seek help.
semperfidelis | May 21, 2011, 11:55 AM EDT
Divine providence.
wilhoef | May 21, 2011, 11:47 AM EDT
I'm second generation Irish, a Culchie from Galway, and I think I know a little about history. ObaMao is the worst president I have ever known, he even beats Carter, Johnson, and Nixon, and I go back to Roosevelt with Truman being my favorite. He is a half breed and not a true black, so it's difficult to be racist on that issue, and he ranks up there intellectually with all the ignorant blatherskites who think they should be American citizens just because they are Irish and in the US. All illegals should be deported or arrested immediately with no amnesty. Judging from the state of affairs with Ireland's economy, which is in shambles, I think the illegals must be somewhat "whacked out" as you say. What are the emigration numbers again? I'd be glad to have a pint with Skibberrean. Slainte!
irishcoffeekid | May 21, 2011, 11:35 AM EDT
I think it will be really sad if he cant make it to moneygall! I'm from Roscrea, right next door to Moneygall so have friends from there and they are so excited about the visit. I live in Washington DC myself and im excited for Ireland and for the village - i understand he's got a time limit in the country to begin with but i think they owe it to the people of Moneygall to turn up, even if they have to slum it in a bullet proof limo to get him there - other helicopters of less power than Marine One are able to fly in irish weather - switch vehicles!! This visit is a big deal for Ireland - Obama going there (forget about the vote issues for a minute) will put ireland back on the map, in the same way that the Queen's visit did (and we're all so glad that went so smoothly and she looked like she enjoyed it!!) right now we need tourists to help the economy and this is tourist season - Obama will encourage Americans to travel to Ireland in the same way a lot of the British people now want to go to Ireland having seen how welcome the Queen was and how beautiful the country was - that should be the priority - a Cead Mile Failte and IRELAND IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS, COME VISIT!
mrkennedy | May 21, 2011, 11:32 AM EDT
Is this a message from GOD for Obama not to take the trip. Hallelujah!!!!!!!!!
borefield | May 21, 2011, 11:24 AM EDT
Perhaps the Sun shines only for those that are genuine. His 5 hour bathroom stop will get him Irish votes from those that know no better. Please keep him, you would do us a HUGE favor.
McNamara31 | May 21, 2011, 11:13 AM EDT
@Skibberrean.... How's that racist thing working for you. And BTW, American historians have already given "a worst American president's title" to GWB. No matter what Obama accomplishes it will never be enough for the likes of you.
Skibberrean | May 21, 2011, 10:59 AM EDT
I raise apint to Wilhoef!! Let the worst President in America's history stay home. He doesn't care about his WHITE IRISH HERITAGE! He is BLACK no matter what, if they are half of anything, they always go BLACK. Let the Irish save their money for someone who eally cares about heritage and not a photo op!!!!!! He is a fraud and nothing elese.
deburca | May 21, 2011, 10:35 AM EDT
@cathy/marty the people and town of Moneygall have already gone to great expense and time preparing for President Obama's visit, I don't think they would agree with you.
deburca | May 21, 2011, 10:33 AM EDT
wilhoef, the people in Ireland aren't a bunch of wacked out tbaggers who need to bash President Obama at every opportunity. And, considering there have already been articles in here and elsewhere talking about all the preparation the people of Moneygall have gone through for his much anticipated visit - why waste your time with such comments. Also, the disgrace to the presidency was George W Bush, the worst US president in history - and the vast majority of people in Ireland know this. So if you're looking for people who agree with you, and opportunities to bash Obama in the tbagger echo chamber, you'd be better off sticking to websites with subject matter concerning geographical areas south of the Mason Dixon Line.
antoman | May 21, 2011, 10:25 AM EDT
Air supremacy my arse.
wilhoef | May 21, 2011, 10:15 AM EDT
I think the folks in Moneygall would be thankful not to have this wimp of a president appear in their town. He is such a joke and a disgrace to the American presidency.
Towngate | May 21, 2011, 10:12 AM EDT
The secret is out! The pesky Potus Feds have busted us! ~ Irelands green and pleasant land is populated by terrorist Assasin - busting heat-seeking semtex sheep and cattle with rocket-launchers disguised as udders. One secret signal ... and it's 'bye-bye, Mooooo-barak O-baaaaa-ma!'
MarthaAnne | May 21, 2011, 10:12 AM EDT
Sorry for the grammar. I need to look over what I have written before posting!
MarthaAnne | May 21, 2011, 10:11 AM EDT
Sorry to read that he is unlikely to be able to go. I think he would be surprised as how much fun he would have being given that famed Irish hospitality from the town of his ancestor. Oh, well, maybe he'd do a rain check !
cathy/marty | May 21, 2011, 10:07 AM EDT
The Irish will be BLESSED if it rains, Look at the money they will save.
cathy/marty | May 21, 2011, 06:35 AM EDT
Why would "... sprawling green fields and lots of sheep and cattle grazing.” interfere with President Obaba's plans to go to Offaly? Helicopter -- Haughey rigeuer in Ireland, right?
