Sarah Palin attacks John F.Kennedy on the basis of running away from his Catholic religion in her latest book 'America By Heart.'
She has some cheek, given that Palin is a failed Catholic herself, having given up on the religion of her Irish forefathers and encompassed one of those hip born-again evangelical identities-- you know the ones where Jesus appears in your rear view mirror and converts you.
Palin attacks Kennedy for his 1960 campaign remark that "I am not the Catholic candidate for president.I am the Democratic Party's candidate for president who also happens to be Catholic."
Kennedy made the remarks at a time when many evangelicals believed there was a hot line from the Vatican to Kennedy's campaign.
That was ironic, given that Kennedy was by no means devout and well aware what happened in the 1928 campaign when Irish Catholic Al Smith was destroyed by anti-Catholic sentiment.
Palin is treading on dangerous turf here. She says that Kennedy essentially declared religion to be "such a private matter that it was irrelevant to the kind of country we are."
Worse she claimed that the statement meant that Kennedy "seemed to run away from his religion."
That is complete nonsense, right up there with her defense of our "ally' North Korea.
Kennedy in fact was protecting his right as a Catholic to run for president at a time when that right was under attack from many leading protestant evangelicals.
In 1960 the leading Protestant church figure Norman Vincent Peale, as spokesman for 150 Protestant clergymen, strongly opposed the election of John F. Kennedy as president. "Faced with the election of a Catholic," Peale declared, "our culture is at stake."
It was in that context that Kennedy made his great speech to the Greater Houston Ministerial Association defending his right to be a Catholic and run for president..
"I believe in an America where religious intolerance will someday end -- where all men and all churches are treated as equal -- where every man has the same right to attend or not attend the church of his choice -- where there is no Catholic vote, no anti-Catholic vote, no bloc voting of any kind -- and where Catholics, Protestants and Jews, at both the lay and pastoral level, will refrain from those attitudes of disdain and division which have so often marred their work in the past, and promote instead the American ideal of brotherhood."
It was perhaps among the greatest statements in favor of freedom of religion every issued in America.
Palin has once again proven herself an intellectual pygmy throwing brickbats form the peanut gallery at one of the great figures of our age.

Palin is treading on dangerous turf here. She says that Kennedy essentially declared religion to be "such a private matter that it was irrelevant to the kind of country we are." Worse she claimed that the statement meant that Kennedy "seemed to run away from his religion." I cant agree with anything the dimwit Palin says, because she doesn't understand her own words given to her by speech writers most of the time. As a good Christian, I would like to offer some advise to Catholics and BOrn-agains: stop lying and preaching fear to you congregations. If you let Love And Humility guide you; THere's no room for fear.
Bushothehill | Jan 14, 2011, 10:13 AM EST
To associate any of the Kennedys' with Catholicism is a debasement of what Catholicism is meant to be. One just has to look at the legacy of this corrupt, hedonist family, starting with Joseph Kennedy Sr., whose friends and associates included Al Capone and whose long time mistress was Gloria Swanson. His genes were lavishly distributed to his offsprings. If Patrick Roberts believes Kennedy was a great figure of our age, then he's the intellectual pygmy of all time!!

Lad, sometimes it only takes on reference to brand you for life. Seems some think you are now an evangelical, snake handling Christian, in spite of your protestations.

McNamara31 You may want to read Frank Ragano's deathbed biography "Mob Lawyer" to become a little more informed on who killed JFK, and "St. Bobby (RFK)for that matter. Ragano delivered a message from Jimmy Hoffa to Trafficante in the spring of 1963 that "Kennedy has to go". Years later, Trafficante told Ragano "we killed the wrong Kennedy in '63, we corrected that mistake 5 years later". BTW, all the main players involved in the Kennedy assassinations were Catholic; if you want to know the truth, just follow the money.

Palin with a dysfunctional family and a dysfunctional ideology ,who with the grace of God will win the GOP nomination in 2012. She will go the same way as other nominees (Goldwater comes to mind). The same "nuke them or invade them" mentality.
irishwxman | Dec 02, 2010, 01:15 PM EST
As long as Sarah continues to keep the left wound up and obsessed over her, she is doing her job. I hope she keeps it up. This is actually hilarious.
SingleDonald | Dec 01, 2010, 04:04 PM EST
Well said, Sheilah, except the last part. As my user name says, I have never been married, thus have no kids. Still, I can't see Sarah having monitored her oldest daughter, Bristol, as closely as you have advocated. Older high school/younger college students have to take responsibility for their own actions. Sarah couldn't monitor Bristol 24/7. I'm sure you are not advocating a return to parents chaperoning dates, as was done in some European-American cultures, a while back. I'm sorry Bristol got pregnant at 17, but she DID have the baby, rather than have an abortion. Her pregnancy says that this can happen to any unwed teen, regardless of race, ethnicity, or economic/social status. Let's hope other teens, boys as well as girls, use her as an example to be more careful with their girlfriends/boyfriends.
Sheilah | Dec 01, 2010, 03:33 PM EST
Sarah is indeed out of her league talking about JFK's defense of his Catholic religion. She could never appreciate his finesse and discernment in choice of words. I heard recently desceased Ted Sorenson (JFK's counsel) describe their road trips on the campaign trail. Outside of the NE, "anti-Catholicism was truly entrenched and mean even as late as 1960". JFK absolutely did just the opposite of shirking from this bias. He hit it dead on in Houston and elsewhere. He opened the door of diversity to many set in their ways of status quo thinking. He inspired nationally and globally. Whereas, Ms. Palin quit the Governorship of Alaska. So who ran away. She either couldn't or wouldn't hold up to her responsibilities to the voters of Alaska. She is self-serving "I'm nationally known now, time to write a book, make lots of money onf the lecture trail" As for her strong family values,I'd say she failed in her parental responsiblities to her own daughter who she should have kept a closer watch on.

Hey brondell...save our country from her?? Who will save it from Obama??
ChiChione | Nov 30, 2010, 05:20 PM EST
Kudos, Patrick! I am not quite sure if Sarah Palin is the dumbest person on the face of the earth or the most ignorant. Either way, I do not understand how she has such a following. Every time she opens her mouth something stupid comes out! For example, when she was McCain's running mate she made a comment about research into fruit flies. Her comment was something like "Fruit flies, can you imagine spending money on Fruit Flies?" She had no idea that the research on Fruit flies was helping a form of cancer. She constantly makes fun of things she does not understand. Unfortunately, there are enough uneducated or ill-informed people in the USA who would elect her as President in 2012. Imagine President Sarah Palin! Perhaps her equally dumb friend, Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann of Minnesota will be Vice President! All I can say is God help America if that happens!!!
brondell | Nov 30, 2010, 03:50 PM EST
Well Patrick, the usual Copperheads are hissing at you again---keep up the good work: detailing Palin's ignorance and bigotry will perhaps save our country from her.
SingleDonald | Nov 30, 2010, 01:56 PM EST
I am saddened to learn that Sarah is "born again"! I, as a Catholic, have always believed that, having been baptized as a baby, I have no need to be "born again"! Kudos to Patrick for his analogy that hip evangelicals are, "...the ones where Jesus appears in your rear view mirror, and converts you". Those people don't believe in "mortal" or "venial" sins. To them ANY transgression (or that which is taken to be a transgression) will "send one to hell", unless he/she begs God's forgiveness! Whet lunacy!! Did you know that the father of Bob Jones, the head of Bob Jones University, once said that he would rather see a saloon on every corner, than a Catholic in the White House? It was his people who brought on Prohibition, yet booze on every corner was preferred to a Catholic President!! As to JFK, I feel he did an excellent job in downplaying his Catholic faith, in favor of "the American ideal of brotherhood", during the 1960 presidential campaign.
McNamara31 | Nov 30, 2010, 01:56 PM EST
It is the same type of rhetoric that Palin espouses that caused the death of Kennedy in Dallas. Anyone who has seen the Kennedy "Wanted for Treason" posters that were hung around Dallas in the days before his visit knows the same stoking the flames of bigotry was going on there as it is in America with the Palin style of politics in 2010. She is a blight on the on American political process and if she looked like Margaret Thatcher no one would have listened to a word comimg out of the mouth of this ill prepared reality queen.
NedoftheHill | Nov 30, 2010, 12:33 PM EST
Yes - liberals love Catholics who are "by no means devout". I would venture that Ms. Palin's stances on many issues of culture and morality are aligned far more with Catholicism than those less-than-devout Catholics such as Nancy Pelosi, Ted Kennedy, Mario Cuomo.
irishwxman | Nov 30, 2010, 11:52 AM EST
Sad Patrick Roberts attacks Sarah Palin for simply being a conservative. You are such a dolt. You really need to find other things to gripe and moan about dude.
njirish | Nov 29, 2010, 09:46 PM EST
Is this the second article about Sarah Palin this tool has written in the last two weeks? I hope she becomes President just to see how these pantywaist liberals react. They will choke on their arugula
Royalosiod | Nov 29, 2010, 08:34 PM EST
Excellent insight Patrick. Unfortunately the USA is such a mix of humanity with low moral values that Palen appeals to the degenerates of many walks of life and that population is growing perhaps even to a majority. I have no doubt that she will be heard in our next presidential primary although there are also about 20 other candidates who all speak from the same low level of seriousness toward the values which previously made America a solid partner in world trade and relations. We are going downhill fast and I personally believe the USA will be eventually eclipsed by Canada and even Mexico as both of those countries still maintain a majority of Catholic with moral standards that equivocate with our Pope Benedict XVI and the entire Catholic Church. More and more the USA is losing it's appeal around the world as a leader or a model of any sort for cooperation with universal interests with peace and prosperity.

SARAH PALIN IS BIG ON MOUTH AND LACKING IN BRAINS. SHE IS SAYING WHATEVER SHE CAN TO STAY IN THE PUBLIC VIEW AND MAKE MORE MONEY. KA-CHING, KA-CHING. SHE WILL NOT RUN FOR PRESIDNET BECAUSE SHE IS MAKING MORE MONEY AS IT IS. COULD YOU CALL HER A WH---. JUST WONDERING VIEW

Deidra47 With respect to your low educated reference, the "low educated women" (sic) as you call her did graduate from college. Flak also has a "c" in it. Where did you go to college? I would like to know so I can avoid sending my kids there. Also, if you "wouldn't pay to buy her books", what would you do then: steal them? Are you related to Abbie Hoffman, author of "Steal This Book". I don't point your mistakes out to belittle you but to raise the point that sometimes people misspeak as in "North Korea being our ally". Do you sincerely that Sarah Palin believes North Korea (part of Bush's Axis of Evil") is an ally. Obama once said "my Muslim faith" in an interview before Stephanopoulos corrected him. I don't think Obama is a Muslim because he misspoke, DO YOU?
chesapeake | Nov 29, 2010, 12:39 PM EST
At first, I was puzzled. Then I recalled cases of vehement opposition to having a Catholic president. Religion is certianly not a political issue; but, there were some who wanted to make it just that; and the papal influence added fuel to the fire. In all probability, they are the sme forces opposed to religion in any form. I remember that, while not disclaiming his religion, Kennedy did downplay any possible influence his actions as President. I would have to read the entire book to ascertain credence to yout claims.

I wouldn't pay to buy her books. Here we have a low educated women with no class/couldn't even finish her term as governor. But she is sly as a fox and practically overnight became rich. People want this flak in the White House......doesn't know what magazines she reads/doesn't know who our "enemy" is in the Korean conflict/and runs her mouth about Kennedy when she doesn't understand the whys and wherefores of that time and why things were said and in which context.. The women is a fool.

Sarah "Bimbo" Palin could NEVER attain not even 1/2% of 1% of what our most revered and globally beloved late U.S. Presidents, John F. Kennedy represented over 40 years ago and now after his untimely death! I can assure EVERYONE that to this day, Kennedy will ALWAYS remain in ALL OUR Spanish speaking communities in America and elsewhere as an icon who spoke for ALL of US Brown people who had no voice or power in America! As for Palin, she has NEVER been welcomed and NEVER will in any and ALL communities of color! She represents BIGOTRY, HATE and XENOPHOBIA! ---- E.F. Mohammed Martinez - East Los Angeles, Ca.

Sarah Palin making statements that JFK would not defend his Catholic religion... missed the mark completely, and further stating that North Korea alliance would be defended by America... simply shows lack of intellectual capacity. " I can see Russia from here". And some American Tea bags see her as president material. John F. Kennedy was a great president and American warrior during WW11... he came from guts and courage. The liberals are socialists in training. Obama will get them there one way or another, re-education camps or death. It's a shame obama won't be around long enough to finish the job. Come on over seano, you could use a lesson or 3 yourself. Palin will play a big part in electing the next Potus. As will the Tea Party. As will the 2nd Amendment Orgs. You can bring your twin sister with ya when you come.
MaryM232 | Nov 28, 2010, 09:16 PM EST
Gov Palin stated that JFK shouldn't have had to run away from his faith, but then again, as you yourself admitted, Kennedy might have been Catholic, but he wasn't a practicing Catholic, he treated his beliefs as cheaply as his marriage vows, as his father treated his own faith, and other human lives cheaply. It was Joe Kennedy who allied himself with Hitler, as Ireland itself did, now didn't it? As to her converting to evangelical Christianity.. you have a problem with that? Are you one of those Irishmen who have a hatred and bigotry against those of other faiths, or Christian sects? I think the problem is the mote in your own eye, as Christ stated, you need to deal with your own flaws, instead of casting aspersions against others. You stink of desperation.

I just don't undertand your take on politics. If the liberals (commies) get their way, there will no longer be a US. When my mother was a child, her family slept with the doors open. Now since the lib's have controlled our country, there are thousands of murders, rapes and other terrible crimes, becaue the lib's feel sad for the poor murderers. You, sir do not have the pulse of the USA, you are a liberal socialist, probably advocating taking from the workers and giving to the non-wokers. Most of the non-workers in the US are just too lazy, or too drugged to work. And "failed" Catholic. Are you serious, have you ever heard about the Protestant Reformation? Men and women died at the hands of Catholics because they were "crazy" enough to have their own Bible. Do me a favor, check some of the Catholic Doctrines, and read your Bible, see if they are Biblical or not. By the way, it was the Savior, Jesus Himself, who said "you MUST be born again, or you cannot enter into the Kingdom of Heaven".
seanomelbourne | Nov 28, 2010, 05:43 PM EST

seamusmoore | Nov 28, 2010, 04:57 PM EST
Patrick, Your "failed catholic, given up on the religion of her Irish forefathers" remarks border on the ludicrous in terms of objective reporting standards.. While Palin was baptized catholic, it was her mother who "encompassed the hip, born again identity" because of her disenchantment with the post-Vatican II catholic church. Perhaps her mother was not a big fan of the folk mass and "Kumbaya" being sung in church or the attempt to modernize the catholic church in an effort to be more "hip". Regardless of the reason, Sara Palin was a toddler when her mother changed the family religion. Your attempt to make it appear like it was her decision is disingenuous at best. BTW, since I am a Catholic and Christ and his mother were Jews, by your logic, should I decsribe myself as a FAILED JEW?
mcmanusrog | Nov 28, 2010, 04:31 PM EST
WHY ARE YOU AFRAID OF SARAH PALIN? SHE'S AN HONEST CHRISTIAN WITH STRONG FAMILY VALUES WHO TELLS IT LIKE IT IS AND NEVER CHEATED ON TODD. It needs to be like the "Good Old Days" when everyone was in their own place. Like the EARLY 1960's. We wish it was like that again. The way some weird people dress and all of the awful language you hear. It didn't used to be that way. Everyone is turning away from the church and God. Better wake up, everybody !!!!!

JFK came onb the scene right before Vatican II. He was able to get advice from priests etc. who told him it was OK to run away from the world. In Vatican II we were told that we should be the "Light of the World" and we should bring our religion as a light and beacon to the world. Catholoic politicians have been using JFK's defense as a way of getting the "liberal" vote. If they listened to Vatican II and our duties to the world they would realize that you cannot seperate your religion from the way you live. Palin is right.

I think you should get over your petty fixation with, and hatred of Mrs Palin.
bluebird1 | Nov 28, 2010, 01:58 PM EST
i am upset she has totally misjudged jfk . he was defending his right to run for president regardless of religious church affiliation so back off sara. i really liked you alot but u ruined it by misinterpreting a great mans words.
sissybiff | Nov 28, 2010, 01:44 PM EST
Would anyone be listening if this woman was unattractive? It's scary anyone is and the phrase used in your story "intellectual pygmy" should precede her name every time.
Monsoonman | Nov 28, 2010, 01:42 PM EST
"In 1960, my parents had to pay Catholic School tuision for my grade school, and property taxes for the public schools"...... Nothings changed since then. The only way to make the American education system great is to break the teachers unions and offer every parent school choice. Every child is issued a voucher to use at the school of choice. Then you'll see competition and separation of wheat from the chaffe. BTW: I have a lot of respect for Sarah, I lived in Alaska, worked in the commercial fishing industry, hunted and explored that state, drank with the Tlinkets and sat under the northern lights, it is not a place for the weak hearted. Anyone that makes it to the top of the heap there is tough.

Palin thanks you for the ink. More books sold & more money in her pocket. Kennedy did just what she said he did. Every article done on her just gives her more votes if she runs. Keep up the good work. The more you hate, the more powerful she becomes.
PhlutiePhan | Nov 28, 2010, 01:09 PM EST
Good analysis. However, let's look at the addendum. JFK was a sinner, as we all are by the by. He engaged in "pillow talk" without a doubt. However, his back was in such bad shape that he couldn't have done nearly half of what he is accused of doing.
bluesunshine | Nov 28, 2010, 12:27 PM EST
I don't understand how anyone could take her seriously. She does give the folks at Saturday Night Live some awesome material.
Pittsburghkid | Nov 28, 2010, 12:20 PM EST
Yes, Kennedy failed to support Catholic School effort for funding. In 1960, my parents had to pay Catholic School tuision for my grade school, and property taxes for the public schools (until they died). Teddy Kennedy is a support in the practices of Abortion, (or Baby Killing in my Irish Catholic family pregnancy was called "carrying a baby". Kennedy developed the idea of "Affirmative Action", and started the practice of the Federal Government labeling all Irish Americans as "White". When I got to apply for a job, I must list myself as "White". Al Smith was from Tamminy Hall, the most corrupt Democrat Orgination in history. The Greatest Irish American President was Reagan. Kennedy was no friend to Irish Americans, and the Roman Catholic Church does not define the Irish. The Roman Catholic Church distroyed the Celtic Catholic Church and divided Ireland for the Rome and England.

Sarah Palin is the perfect candidate for the republican party. She is pretty with no sense whatsoever. She is riding a popularity bandwagon that will crash at the bottom of the hill. Unfortunately, the American voting public will forget that she is a failed Catholic, a poor mother who let her daughter get away with murder and who thinks that she is above the law, ala the issue with the State Troopers. She resigned from the governorship of a state with one of the smallest populations and largest hunks of government largesse, yet we will gladly let her run our country?..... because she's pretty??????
killowen | Nov 28, 2010, 11:39 AM EST
why give the crazy such ink or binary bits - nut case.
jamieLM | Nov 28, 2010, 11:30 AM EST
Your obsession with Palin has reached the degree of ad nauseum. You're not going to change anyone's opinion of her with your columns. People either hate her or love her. Is there no other person in the U.S. with Irish ancestry that you could write about???? Btw, how much Irish ancestry does Palin have? It must be a lot because you keep her front and center for your IC readers. As for the Kennedy family, the late Rose and Ethel were/are the devout ones.
maryemoore | Nov 28, 2010, 11:24 AM EST
She's an idiot! JFK, Korea, seeing Alaska from her house! I'm no fan of Katie Curic but saying she blindsided her (Palin) when she asked her what publications she read? Really?! Basic question. She acts like the big shot when she is speaking to a large group of people but tanked in her debate with Biden and cannot hold her own with anyone one-on-one when she has to answer off the cuff. She will lose against Romney for the Republican nomination. I am listening right now to the McLauglin report and even all the conservatives on that show are saying she is not ready for prime time. She has become a celebrity not a well-versed politician.
SeamusMor | Nov 28, 2010, 11:01 AM EST
Palin's beauty is only skin deep, but her ignorance goes to the bone!
pndirishandprou | Nov 28, 2010, 10:56 AM EST
Why this uneducated, double-digit IQ, barbie doll icon of the ignorant far-right even get as much attention as Hannah Montana or Paris Hilton? This low-life, white-trash woman doesn't/can't even read and wants the public to believe that she wrote a book. Irrespective of the non-sense she is uttering in it, she didn't write it in the first place. It's her far-right handlers who penned this garbage. Obama must be salivating at the prospect of running against this intellectual midget in 2012.
mayoman | Nov 28, 2010, 10:53 AM EST
Like her mendacious fellow-travellers at Fox Propaganda, Palin has the extraordinary ability to take any facts and spin and distort them into whatever tripe she wants. Everyone knows that Kennedy was obliged to downplay his Catholicism in order to get elected President.
REMITROMJR | Nov 28, 2010, 10:35 AM EST
JFK; one of the great figures of our age??? Granted that his assassination foreshortened his term in office but his was a a failed presidency of good intentions but short on results and he, more likely than not wouldn't have been elected to a second term. NOTHING, especially not a religion he practiced in name only, was going to stop the Kennedy family's belief that they were born to the presidency. Palin was calling a spade a spade; Kennedy did throw his religion under the bus in his quest for power.
wheelsltd | Nov 28, 2010, 10:30 AM EST
I think she has Tourette's and that is just the way it is.
joanmoody | Nov 28, 2010, 10:19 AM EST
Frankly, I am tired of all the hoopla concerning the Kennedy's and angry at Palin for bringing it up. We all all free to be whatever church we want to be in. And there are elements in this country who are trying to push "their" law on us through the legal system!!! Anti-catholicism still exists and will be the last great "ism" in this country.
Waterford | Nov 28, 2010, 09:51 AM EST

2BorNot2B | Nov 28, 2010, 09:41 AM EST
The only Catholics in that family are the late Rose Kennedy and Ethel, Bobby's widow.
hooligan6a | Nov 28, 2010, 09:34 AM EST
So, she has an opinion about JFK. Was he such a pious and holy man that you can't have an opinion about him? Your allowed an opinion about Sara. Why can't she have an opinion about JFK?
chriswalsh | Nov 28, 2010, 09:26 AM EST
Enough about Ms. Palin, it seems like every word that comes out of her mouth you twist and turn and give her those ridiclous headlines. She is a great example to women, she is a hard worker, holds her head up no matter what negative crap is printed about her. So your views are not the same as hers, free speech is what America prides it's self on. No I am not a republica or a tea partier I am a life long democratic. Write something about our young men and women that are getting killed overseas, how their families are doing, something that is really importnant, don't thrash someone if they have a slip of the tongue it happens to everyone. Talk about the current White HOuse people and their lack of doing anything for the country.
hooligan6a | Nov 28, 2010, 09:22 AM EST
So she said North and not South, big deal. Have you never made a "slip of the tongue"? I know you all are perfect and she is not, so let's all pile on.
CitizenWhy | Nov 28, 2010, 09:14 AM EST
You seem to forget that Sarah Palin is a Goddess, infallible in every detail.
hooligan6a | Nov 28, 2010, 09:14 AM EST
Who are you people? Why do you hate Palin so much? What a bunch of lefties you Irish are. If he were alive today, I don't think JFK would hate Palin like you people do.
tomgallagher | Nov 28, 2010, 08:59 AM EST
I think that if Palin were to announce the 2nd coming of Christ, the left would somehow find a way to attack her for that.
maireadinmelb | Nov 28, 2010, 04:29 AM EST
But you miss the point George, Palin is showing her lack of knowledge in american history, where in the 1960's there was still a large anti catholic feeling in america. Kennedy, like all americans is free to practice whatever religion he chooses and it is no one elses business!! Separation of religion and state was founding principal of America.
GeorgeDillon | Nov 28, 2010, 03:08 AM EST
Palin is quite right, and Roberts is, surprise surprise, serving stale baloney. The Kennedys had no religion, their Cathgolicism was a sham. The more egregious example of this was the abortionist Teddy, who exerted himself throughout his political life to impose abortion on the US. The Kennedys essentially said "We're Catholics but we don't believe in that stuff". Our despicable Catholic bishops shamed themselves by trouping around Teddy's coffin. Whited sepulchres and hypocritical bastards.
