Rush Limbaugh has four wives, the latest a thirtysomething year old who I’m sure loves him dearly for his extraordinary physique, and not his oceanfront Palm Beach mansion.
He’s also an admitted pill addict who nonetheless insists on lecturing to the rest of the world about matters of morals and human behavior.
Rush and Newt Gingrich share the same blind spot, the inability to connect the dots between their own scandalous private lives and the moralizing they carry on with in public.
This time Limbaugh has gone too far. His assault on a young woman, Sandra Fluke, defending contraceptive rights, when he called her a slut and a prostitute, was so personal that even the most hardcore Rush fans blanched.

The immediate impact was companies pulling their advertising from his top-rated radio show, and a nationwide move to boycott his program.
Amazingly, it has had the desired effect.
Limbaugh was clearly facing disaster over his comments, and has now rowed back from them in the most humiliating fashion possible for him.
Maureen Dowd, in her column in Sunday’s “New York Times,” asked a key question – does Rush Limbaugh have any shame?
The surprising answer to me and many others, is that he does – especially when his rich livelihood is threatened.
Limbaugh has refused to apologize for so many evil comments in the past that it comes as a seismic shock that he was forced to do so on this occasion.
It is his Joe McCarthy moment, the instance where a U.S. Army officer asked McCarthy at a hearing if he had any shame in blindly accusing so many innocent people of sedition and Communist sympathies.
Limbaugh has now reached that seminal moment himself, and the amazing fact is that Fluke, a 30-year-old Georgetown University law student, utterly unknown until a few days ago, is the person who brought him to his knees.
It was obvious when President Obama called Fluke to sympathize with her that public opinion had begun to flow hugely against Limbaugh.
In the best spirit of American politics, Obama decided to kick Limbaugh while he was down, and succeeded in extending the crisis by his call to Fluke.
It was a masterful stroke, and the exact opposite of that pander bear, Mitt Romney, who when asked about Limbaugh’s comments said he merely felt that Rush used a poor choice of words.
A poor choice indeed, and one that will haunt Limbaugh for the foreseeable future.
Finally the dragon has been bearded in his den, and Limbaugh may not recover from this blow.
If that is the end result, and a more civil discourse begins in American politics, this will be a great development.
Limbaugh has been humbled, but whether he is defeated remains to be seen.

Wow, what a bunch of hypocritical hogwash! Where was all of the outrage over Maher? Letterman? Michael Moore? all you have shown me is that you approve of ANYTHING the liberals do but God forbid the conservative that does anything shameful. Bill Maher is outright disgusting, and Obama is intent on making America a communist country, and you thinkk that's ok? You people are totally living in LaLa Land.
ceceann | Mar 19, 2012, 11:49 PM EDT
Are you nuts? Where was the shame when Lettterman said Sarah's 15 year old daughter was knocked up by A Rod? Where was the shame when Bill Maher said we should send Elizabeth Hassellbeck in Lara Logan's place to be sexually assaulted? Where was the shame when he called Sarah vile unprintable names? What hippocrits you and your fans are! It is only shameful in your estimation when a conservative does it. You have lost all credibility. I do not approve of these 2 or Limbaugh so, I do not listen to them. When their ratings go down, perhaps decent language will prevail by both camps. By Obama accepting Maher's million dollar donation, he is endorsing this type of so called entertainment.

kilgara, no chief executive can nullify federal law. Your notion that Obama, or any US president, can unilaterally repeal settled US law shows a lamentable lack of acquaintance with the Constitution and its checks and balances on the exercise of power by the branches of government.

Hey Eiramach, Your quote"It is ludicrous that Obama would adopt any pro-abortion federal policy". This man is one of the few Senators who voted to extend allowable abortions even after delivery ! Not even Barbara Boxer or Hilary could endorse that.If you would kindly remove your head from your posterior we might no longer be forced to indulge your moronic diatrabes.

As of today 29 sponsors have left the Rush Limbaugh show. After years of his constant distortion of the news and the facts and the constant smears and vilification of all he targeted, in the end all it took was a little "fluke" to cast the conservative "shark" from the pond.
torbreezy | Mar 07, 2012, 11:21 AM EST
El Rushbo is a man of singular brilliance, prescience and inspiration but a "man" nonetheless: how sad that lesser mortals "pile on" when indeed they would do well to thank God we have a veritable "John the Baptist" among us who exudes and exhibits his "talents on loan from God" everyday.

Mr. Roberts... You're right on with your analysis of the situation and it was refreshing to read this article. Mitt Romney's statement describing Limbaugh's comments as a poor choice of words makes you wonder what words Romney would have chosen. The candidates on the right are afraid of the "dragon"... but me thinks he has lost much of his power and may not regain it. So many are underestimating the power of women today... they are fighting hard and strong for their rights (although I thought most of this was settled in the '60's). With the power of technology and the Internet, women are getting results swiftly by uniting, speaking out, and signing online petitions by the thousands. In this case, it was women (the primary retail shoppers in the nation) who pressured Limbaugh's radio sponsors to abandon his show or they would boycott their products... and it worked. It was also evidenced recently with the reversal of the "Komen Foundation's" hypocracy. For the first time in a long time, women have the support of a President who believes in women's rights and isn't afraid to act on their behalf.

Letterman said the Palin's 14 year old daughter was sleeping a baseball player. Letterman held his job. The assults on Palin and her family have been bad, but no one in the Lamestream Media lost their job. This is definately a double standard.

Limbaugh is a nasty little man who has no respect for marriage. He,Gingrich and O'Reilly espouse Christian values on marriage and fidelity yet they play under their own rules the sanctimonious hypocrites.Theresaom is an ignorant fool with a stupid attitude towards contraception.
eiriamach | Mar 06, 2012, 03:07 PM EST
Theresaom has not bothered to read Ms Fluke's testimony, but she does not allow ignorance to inhibit her here. She rants on and on with her completely fictional version of Sandra Fluke's criticism of her university's discriminatory but mandatory health insurance. A deliberate misrepresentation of facts is what we call a lie. People who indulge in aggressive, in-your-face, complete-with-obscenities and shouts of "SHUT UP!!!!!" misrepresentations of facts are people I call liars (and worse, when my customary philosophic equanimity suffers a lapse). And, once again, I say specifically to Theresaom that such behavior in a public forum is offensive.
pickateer | Mar 06, 2012, 09:35 AM EST
Truth is she is a Liberal activist who wants others to pay for her sleeping around. She should let those that bed her pay for their dalliances. And in layman terms a woman that sleeps around is a Tart, Slut, Skank, all of the above. But then where is the outrage with regard to Bill Maher or those NBC "journalists" when they use language even more vile to describe Conservative women. Oh then its "funny!"

Somebody else offended again. I'm tired of everybody getting offended. I'm a woman. If I go in front of congress and claim that I need a boat load of birth control per year, what the hell do I think will be said. She has every right to tell the world the amount of sex that she has just the same as anybody else has the right to respond to her ridiculous comments any way they see fit. If she gets offended, she should think about that before she opens her mouth! Actions have consequences!!! If you don't ever want to be offended, then shut your mouth, otherwise grow up and deal with the consequences from your words. I'm so sick of everybody whining and being offended. Get a damn backbone! Apparently she has no shame with needing and asking for $3000 of birth control a year so how could she possibly be offended by the word slut!!!! Is that not the very definition of the word or do we now call it the "s" word!!!! SHUT UP!!!!!

DrSheilahere, I am presumably in your generation (baby boomer), but think differently now, than I did years ago. You likely read my post on this topic, when I said I regretted referring to Vanessa Redgrave as a "slutty tramp", when she had that baby, out of wedlock. As an uncle, I am pleased that my 19-year old niece is on & off with one guy. I do realize, however, that she is old enough to have a few boyfriends, and I wouldn't condemn her if she did. Even baby boomers have come a long way in cutting the female gender some slack, where their sexuality is concerned. Of course, I pray that my niece never lets every guy on campus "get his rocks off with her". Knowing her, she is more responsible than that, and thus wouldn't let it happen..
TomFitz | Mar 05, 2012, 07:39 PM EST
DrSheilahere, God bless you... It's good to hear some intelligent words for a change.. This student put herself out there with her comments publicly.. Did she not expect any response from people who may be upset by her statements? I think not.. She has made an overnight sensation who was looking for recognition among her female peers.. What else could she expect if she was halfway intelligent.. When a person "puts themselves out there, and become a national figure, they have to reap the rewards.. Good or bad..

PatriciaMarya, I DO accept your views that the Church, historically, has been harsh on women. Please, though, stop fabricating a revision to Genesis! Concerning Genesis, I have heard, through the years, that Adam supposedly had a wife before Eve, named Lilith. She was more independant that Eve, and left Adam because he couldn't accept this. If anybody here can share more light on this Lilith, I would appreciate it!

Rush Limbaugh is a radio host expousing his opinions why is this taken so seriously? He's an addict, bigot, blow hard and horn dog chasing skirts that would never look at him if he wasn't filthy rich. He's telling the world converative values and ideas how we should all live while he lives like Caligula.
DrSheilahere | Mar 05, 2012, 05:17 PM EST
The president apologizing-- he is always apologizing for something. Limbaugh today, Israel tomorrow. As for Rush, anyone from our generation would view a woman who willingly claims she has so many sex partners she is going broke paying for them is a slut. She is, by her own admission, the campus trampolene. Now, I would suggest if you don't want people to call you names, don't align yourself with sluts. If it looks like a slut, and acts like a slut, then it is a slut. Some information should be yours to the grave. But, that's my generation. Today, a parent would be proud to know that their daughter is so desired that every guy on campus can get his rocks off with her and she's just dandy with that. Grow up.,
PatriciaMarya | Mar 05, 2012, 01:37 PM EST
As the late, great Irish-American Sen. Patrick Moynihan put it so clearly "While you are welcome to your own opinions, you are not welcome to your own facts." Taxpayers are not paying the insurance premiums of college students across this country: their self-paid FEES are! These are not people on Medicaid - when you are in school, you are not eligible for these tax-payer programs. What is being requested is for these Rxs to be included as covered on the eligible pharmaceutical list. And while we are at it, the Catholic Church has no problem with that over-priced Blue Pill to be fully covered and no problem with male vasectomies - a form of birth control due to the fact that the sperm no longer swim downstream. But God forbid that the same rationale is used with females. Birth Control pills are also used to regulate the monthly menses cycle - you know, The Period, the action where girls and women bleed every month along with pain, cramping and physical discomfort. But no, let us not have a medication that can regulate the hormonal cycle so that women can continue to suffer The Sins of Eve. In Medieval times, women were not allowed to be treated with soothing herbs or the use of forceps, called the Claws of the Devil, by the way, by the monks who insisted that women suffer due to Eve. And while we are at it, think about it - whoever heard of a talking snake? No clothes were being worn, right? It was Adam behind a tree, setting up Eve to be the Victim of God's anger, taking the blame for men's actions as usual, right from the very beginning. And that attitude continues to go on unchecked still.

sgrotzky : Did you listen? Did she say 40% of the female students at Georgetown have ovarian cycts? No.. She was giving an example of only one student that she knew. The average cost of a pack of 12 condomes is $4.50 (38 cents each). $3000.00 would buy 7895 condoms per student. That's a hell of a lot of sex! When do they have time to study? She is on a Public Interest Scholarship..and wants even more freebies too accomodate her sexual pleasures. When will people wake up and see that this is yet another of an endless list of entitlements that Obama is offereing these kids to buy there votes. Rush Limbaugh's remarks may have been wrong to say on the air, but I can assure you that is what many listeners would be thinking even if he didn't say it.
eiriamach | Mar 05, 2012, 05:30 AM EST
More 'faith-based and fact-free' comments from jetsnoone and redwood and kilgara to insult our intelligence. The appeal to mob emotions that these "don't confuse me with the facts" folks engage in escalates each time they post. It's ludicrous that Obama would adopt any pro-abortion federal policy, much less charge religious organizations for abortions, and what's more, it's been illegal some time. The Hyde Amendment--remember that? No, the fact filters glued to their organs of perception have effectively screened out reality for them.
redwood1957 | Mar 05, 2012, 05:08 AM EST
He said a bad thing, he has the right to say it. I did not hear it I have the right to listen to whom I want. She has the right to ask for us to pay for her and others birth control. I have the right to say sorry I don't want to pay for it. Please remember who started this, Mr Obama the divider. He does not have the right to tell us we must pay for anything. All done for these results. Don't fall for it, all of it is a distraction.

I deplore Rush Limbaugh's remarks, despite admiring some of his positions. These nasty comments represent a mostly bygone prejudice, against the female gender. I was raised in the era when a high premium was placed on a girl's virginity. "Nice girls" didn't do sexual things, especially not full experiences. Sadly, I referred to actress Vanessa Redgrave as a "slutty tramp", when she had a baby out of wedlock. Had I used my head, even then, I would have realized that her having the baby was better than her getting an abortion. Shortly thereafter, I learned more about female sexuality, and how much more complex it was than my own. I then realized that the respect all men should have for women can be reflected by us meeting their physical & emotional needs. If a girl wishes to remain virginal, we should respect that as well. It, however, is darn foolish to equate having consensual experiences with being a "whore". Prostitutes get paid; ordinary women seek intimacy for affection with a man. I'm happy most men, Rush excluded, are more enlightened today, concerning female sexuality.
badolan | Mar 04, 2012, 08:28 PM EST
Didn't Limbaugh get caught with a suitcase full of Viaga on his way to South America a few years ago. No joke. Hopefully, his latest wife insists that he use a condom so he won't give her anything (if he can get it up). What a fat hypocritical pig.
badolan | Mar 04, 2012, 08:24 PM EST
Limbaugh's latest repugnant comments pale in comparison to his grotesque imitation of Michael J. Fox's Parkinson disease. That was truly disturbing episode. However, Limbaugh fans will support him irregardless of what he says or does. His fans can rationalize his behavior even better than he himself can.

I am not surprised that so many of the people willing to call her a slut didn't even listen to what she had to say. She was talking about a friend who needed contraceptives to control an ovarian cyst. Her inability to have them covered by insurance, or ability to pay herself, cost her an ovary. Nowhere did she discuss sex in relation to herself, nor was it any of anyones business. But I do see the usual idiots out calling her a slut without reading anything about it. Nice job in looking like an ignoramus there guys.
seanomelb | Mar 04, 2012, 06:28 PM EST
Limbaugh is ignorant of contraceptives and how they work(and some posters here are just as ignorant). It matters not how many times a woman has sex or maybe taking the pill for other disorders, she only takes one pill a day.
eiriamach | Mar 04, 2012, 05:30 PM EST
Do the Limbaugh enlistees posting below have any idea how health insurance works? The person who uses the insurance pays for it. Ms Fluke's university charges a pretty penny AND makes it mandatory for law students to pay for it, yet the university refuses to offer insurance that covers contraception for women-- an expensive, MD-prescribed and MD- monitored form of reproductive health care. Gynecologists often prescribe it to treat serious health conditions, not just to prevent pregnancy! This is utter ignorance, misogynist and prurient as well: "he certainly was right about not wanting to pay for her extra curricular activities, and if we are paying for her 'jollies', we should get to see the video, though, by the looks of her, who'd want to watch it?" This sort of language is abusive of women! It is hate speech that does not belong on IC or any site that decent people might visit. This is the poison that Limbaugh spits regularly at the American public, and I find the posters below who spread it thoroughly offensive.

This man is a lowlife who makes millions distorting the news/facts for the GOP and corporate interests who benefit from their deregulation. He has been the major player along with Roger Ailes in dividing this country to total polarization. Anyone who follows and believes what this sub human spouts simply doesn’t want the facts to get in the way of their hate and bigotry. I for one am totally sick of the extreme gun toting, deregulating, polluting fringe having so much impact on policy. And you know who is to blame? Us. Only 10% at most turn out for primary elections and those are mostly the fringe voter as was witnessed by the screams from the audience during the past GOP debates. KeyWestConch | Mar 04, 2012, 02:29 PM EST
Don't forget that Limbaugh is also deaf. So for most of the past 20 years he has been stoned AND couldn't hear. Couldn't comprehend but didn't hear what anybody said anyway. Which explains a lot of what he says now. It probably took him a couple of days to figure out that anybody was complaining about what he said about Ms. Fluke. He was apparently able to read his bank statements though.
sqeyes48 | Mar 04, 2012, 02:01 PM EST
One thing many are missing in this chat is that birth control medication is also used for various female medical problems. Just centering the pitch on birth control and not that the medication may be needed for any number of other problems is quite short sighted. Rush has always tried for the 'outragious' but if he is entertainment, then he is to serious thought like WWE is to pro sports.
MegK311 | Mar 04, 2012, 01:40 PM EST
How many of you have put your foot in your mouth and said something that you later wish you hadn't said. $3,000 a year for contraceptives, wow I am in my 70s and have never in my whole life spent $3,000 on contraceptives. As to Rush being a drug addict I think is unfair. He became addicted to pain medication which I think would be very easy to do. Many people become addicted to pain medications. You mentioned companies withdrawing their advertising from his show well I can think of two companies that owe their success to Rush for promoting their products on the air when they were struggling to get started. I know that the liberals hope that this is the end of Rush but I don't think so, Don't hold your breath. Many liberals make worse statements than Rush did but they get away with it. I think it is called a double standard. I don't agree with everything Rush says or does but the liberal media is making much a do about nothing.

What's all the hullabaloo about? Any woman the spends $3000 a year on birth control, if not a slut, what is she? And then to get up before congress and admit it, She has no shame It also raises the question, does she make a living at it or just get better grades? But geting back to the main issue, Why in the world does she expect the tax payer to pay for her fun? Shouldn't her date pay and not the tax payer?
PhlutiePhan | Mar 04, 2012, 11:35 AM EST
Do your reearch! "Tail Gunner Joe" never was proven wrong in his Communist allegations. Even the beloved Lucille Ball had been sucked into the Communist Party for altruistic reasons. The issue with Ms. Flake or is it Fluke is one of a Catholic University albeit a nominal one paying for the contraception of an individual. She was a law school student and not an undergraduate who may have had an argument for health coverage. A comment may say that it was for hormonal "cyst" prevention but that argument is a joke. She wanted to be covered for promiscuity. The argument is not for the coverage of sexual activity. It is one of the coverage being paid for by a Catholic University. If she is covered, then premiums would go up elsewhere just to fund her vanity.
joanxis | Mar 04, 2012, 11:06 AM EST
For those few of you who are taking Rush's side - you are just as ignorant as he was when he made his statements. I have watched and read Sandra Fluke's testimony and not once does she mention that she wants or needs contraceptives because of sex - her wanting contraceptives to prevent getting pregnant because she wants so much sex. Her speech was for the medicinal use of contraception pills. They help prevent ovarian cycts and other medical problems. Please learn before you open your mouths. I wonder how you would feel if Rush called your daughters or grandaughters those names unfairly.

Disgraceful rudeness on the part of Rush. Puts one in mind of President Obama deliberately calling the Tea Partiers, 'Tea Baggers'. The apology for that hasn't quite arrived yet.

a bit of over the top hyperbole. However, if we're going to pay for her play why can't we watch? Fluke claims poverty saying paying 3000 per year would take all her summer earnings. Any attorney knows that summer interns from Georgetown Law School earn at least $2000 per week as interns. Further she cand buy effective birth control at the corner drug store for a few dollars. She's not Fluke, she's fake.

I would heartily disagree with your assessment of Obama's "masterful" move when he called Sandra Fluke. Many American feminists see this response as entirely inadequate. This week we are hearing all about a War on Women when those of us with memories remember that it was Democrats and the Obama campaign in particular who fired the first shot against Hillary Clinton 4 years ago. He's left us to fight this battle entirely on his own and if Rush goes down, it will be because WE did it, we women, and we won't owe him or any repugnant Republican politician anything. Call this The Revenge of the Feminazis. We would be stupid to settle for anything less than exiling Rush Limbaugh permanently to blogtalkradio.

This disgusting, vile, bad-mouthed person should not be on the air. He would be wise to take care of his own problems which are many, before pointing the finger at another. This Republican Party is a total joke, the whole thing is like a comedy of errors and it gets worse by the day.

Ms Fluke needs to go to class; and none of us need to pay for her birth control.
hollabackgurl | Mar 04, 2012, 10:23 AM EST
Rush called a young woman a 'slut' which is a term I haven't heard used by a man since high school. He also called her a 'prostitute.' He's a trash talking disgrace.

wjb1tex, the difference between journalism and Rush is, everything in the above article is true, and Rush's tirade is only name calling, without facts. I wouldn't worry about his well being, FOX followers like his do as I say, not as I have done attitude.
Murph46 | Mar 04, 2012, 10:03 AM EST
Patrick b4 you call the kettle black you better read your own writing.Rush's comments though rude were nonetheless right,I don't want to ppay for Ms.Flukes birth control -how about the rest of you. What's next ?Health Club premiums.Lets get something straight contraceptives are not a right, rights are lie ,liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
wjb1tex | Mar 04, 2012, 09:53 AM EST
And you critasize others for comments you find out of step ? How about these ? " Rush Limbaugh has four wives, the latest a thirtysomething year old who I’m sure loves him dearly for his extraordinary physique, and not his oceanfront Palm Beach mansion. He’s also an admitted pill addict"
BusQueen34 | Mar 04, 2012, 09:48 AM EST
Rush Limbaugh is absolutely disgusting. On his 4th wife, a "so-called" recovering drug addict, and a real troublesome person for the Republican party. Also, shame on Romney for his "wimpy" remark. He could have stood up and denounce the "slut, etc." comment, but he did not.

Has Letterman or Maher apologized yet? 0 just accepted $1M from Maher. At least Limbaugh and Gingrich marry them. Clinton raped or assaulted them.
